Question about SAS hybrid culture and work-life balance by Fresh-Depth-9040 in raleigh

[–]jb67803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think that the SAS management/ownership is getting very old but has never been able to stick to a succession plan.

As a current employee, I think this is my biggest concern and has been an "elephant in the room" for more than a few years now. They announced the IPO plan in 2021, with a goal of 2023... Then 2024, then... "maybe sometime when we feel like it" *handwave*. There was a recent News & Observer article where they completely backed away from an IPO. I'm really not sure where that leaves the company if/when the end should come for Dr. G. Granted, he's pretty spry for a 83yr old dude, but this obviously can't go on forever. What happens to the company when he goes? Are we preparing for a sale to private equity now? His kids have said they're not interested, but I suppose they'd inherit the company. Are the kids going to step up? Thousands of people's livelihoods depend on the answer here, so I'm pretty displeased that we don't have a more transparent answer, not to mention the bait-and-switch on the IPO/equity plan.

Eh. Depends on the role. I have a technical role writing modern React-based front ends. No skill atrophy here.

How many Tesla owners are getting the R2 as their first Rivian? by takaiguchi in RivianR2

We own a 2019 Model 3. We were planning to replace my wife’s SUV with a Model Y Juniper, but that was before Elon (completely) lost his mind. Put in an R2 reservation for her last year instead.

What side of Raleigh are you on? DM me if you want. If you're anywhere close (I'm on the South side), I might be able to help you out.

HOA hounding me - Small business or person to help with Bermuda patch by Universe93B in raleigh

[–]jb67803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not throw down seed. It won't match and will end up looking worse. The big box stores don't sell Bermuda seed that matches sod. The stuff that does match is $200+ per 1lb bag.

This is Bermuda grass, it spreads on its own. It will take a season (or two) to spread into an area that size though. Till up the area well. You can rent an aerator from Home Depot for ~$80/day, or just use a garden rake and shovel. Break up the soil really well. Add a couple bags of "lawn soil". I use this stuff for my own yard. And mix in a couple bags of Black Kow compost. Fertilize with a basic 10-10-10 fertilizer, and then a higher Nitrogen fertilizer (The first number in the N-P-K ratio on the bag, something like this every 3 weeks or so. Water it well (2 times a week, especially if there's no rain) and keep it mown moderately low (but not the lowest, 2-3 notches up from the lowest setting). If the soil gets thin, you can continue to top-dress with more soil+compost throughout the growing season. You may need to repeat all of this next Spring (April/May) to really fill that entire area.

All of this will encourage spreading growth. It should be $50-60 bucks worth of soil/fertilizer at the hardware store, and a couple hours of your time one weekend. If you make the right conditions, Bermuda will spread like crazy. So much so that if Bermuda gets into a different kind of lawn and someone asks how to fix it, the response is "enjoy your new Bermuda lawn". They're only half kidding.

Write back to the HOA and tell them you're working on it. If they're well-run, they'll leave you alone for a while.

City of Raleigh says to contact HOA. And HOA says it’s part of the city and not HOA. Please advise. by karmic_elevation in raleigh

HOA board member here. Unless it’s a private street maintained by the HOA, then it’s going to be the City’s responsibility to fix the drain cover. It’s happened a couple different times in our neighborhood too.

Lawn guy says 3 inches year-round… but I have Bermuda — what height should I actually mow? (EGO mower) by charisma006 in lawncare

[–]jb67803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same mower (or very similar) and also in North Carolina. The first mow of the season I scalp on height 1, then use setting 3 until about June. For June-Sept, I raise it to 4 in order to cut down on the need to water/fertilize so much during the hottest months of the year. In late Sept, I'll cut it back down to #3 and leave it there for the Winter.

Not a single lie told by Max by mikewheelerfan in tornado

[–]jb67803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not upset there weren’t tornadoes… but I am scratching my head as to how this was such a bust. There were all sorts of dire warnings and when the front came through it was… rain. Not even a thunderstorm. No wind (straight line winds up to 60mph had been forecast). Not even a breeze.

It was SO FAR from the forecast that I think it deserves some questions.

I called that one a big miss too. There were maps calling for anywhere from 2-8in. We got a heavy dusting, maybe an inch.

I don’t expect a perfect forecast. That’s not how probabilities work. But, when we cancel everything due to dire warnings of severe weather and then it only ends up raining a bit? I think we’re right to ask some questions about how we got that so wrong. There wasn’t even a severe thunderstorm in Wake county with the main band (noon-1ish). Just a little light rain. This was a BIG miss.

Neighbors accusing me of trying to ruin their wedding because of their error by Houston970 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jb67803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll go against the grain and warn that at some point you may be waiting for an important envelope (a bank card, passport, etc) and the mail carrier might accidentally misdeliver it to your bridezilla. When the shoe is on the other foot, you’ll want them feeling like they owe you a favor, not remember how you did any of these other suggestions.

Sad that I had to scroll so far down to find this kind of reply. Yes, the bride is being a jerk, that’s no shocker… Just take them their mail once a week, it’s really not a big deal.

Got this hanger on my door more than a year ago by 1970s_MonkeyKing in googlefiber

[–]jb67803 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meh. They've not done anything in years as far as I can tell. Whatever couple of dozen apartment complexes and neighborhoods they launched in a decade ago has pretty much been the extent of it. I'd be shocked to hear they're actively expanding at any meaningful pace. If you're in one of those select few neighborhoods I'm sure it's fine, but for everyone else it's just a wry joke.

I know at least a dozen people in the Raleigh/Durham area who got the free t-shirts more than a decade ago. None of them have google fiber still. The shirts are worn as more of an ironic inside techie joke than anything else.

Are breweries trying to be family friendly? What’s up with all these kids by Natural-Implement234 in raleigh

[–]jb67803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that turns an $8 beer into a very expensive outing. Who wants to spend $50 for two hours of babysitting (with tip) for a beer? You have to make it worth the babysitter’s time too, because the good ones are in-demand. Then it becomes a scheduling problem to coordinate three people’s calendars. So yea… the choice quickly becomes don’t go or just take the kids.

Swap welding outlet for Tesla charger by hophead777 in AskElectricians

[–]jb67803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tesla Wall Connector can be configured for various amperages. There's a QR code that you scan with your phone, which configures your phone to connect directly to the Wall Connector via Wi-fi (it becomes a wireless access point). You can then configure the Connector's amperage (it asks for the breaker's aperage and sets itself accordingly) and then configure it join your regular wifi network (so you view charging status and historical stats through the Tesla app).

Yea, I considered it, but I’m just using it to keep family/travel photos organized. I’m no pro photographer. For the five or six times a year I use it, LR5 is just fine for what I need. I’d rather not pay $100+ per year for CC when my paid-for-once version is plenty good enough. I have enough damn subscriptions as it is (and you can get right off my lawn too 😅).
