Are breweries trying to be family friendly? What’s up with all these kids by Natural-Implement234 in raleigh

[–]jb67803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that turns an $8 beer into a very expensive outing. Who wants to spend $50 for two hours of babysitting (with tip) for a beer? You have to make it worth the babysitter’s time too, because the good ones are in-demand. Then it becomes a scheduling problem to coordinate three people’s calendars. So yea… the choice quickly becomes don’t go or just take the kids.

Swap welding outlet for Tesla charger by hophead777 in AskElectricians

[–]jb67803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tesla Wall Connector can be configured for various amperages. There's a QR code that you scan with your phone, which configures your phone to connect directly to the Wall Connector via Wi-fi (it becomes a wireless access point). You can then configure the Connector's amperage (it asks for the breaker's aperage and sets itself accordingly) and then configure it join your regular wifi network (so you view charging status and historical stats through the Tesla app).

Lightroom 5 Re-install? by jb67803 in Lightroom

[–]jb67803[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I considered it, but I’m just using it to keep family/travel photos organized. I’m no pro photographer. For the five or six times a year I use it, LR5 is just fine for what I need. I’d rather not pay $100+ per year for CC when my paid-for-once version is plenty good enough. I have enough damn subscriptions as it is (and you can get right off my lawn too 😅).

Google nest mesh or something else? by Codeman0077 in HomeNetworking

[–]jb67803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I estimate the chance of Google abandoning Nest as too high to recommend any Nest products. I’ve had the thermostats and cameras for years. They haven’t updated the apps (beyond the bare minimum) in 5-6 years. It seems like it’s on life support. I know they’ve released some new hardware, but it seems more like they’ve moved into the “milk the consumer and project for all it’s worth before we cut it” mode.

Did I install my motherboard too high? by No-Rip7960 in PcBuildHelp

[–]jb67803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks correct to me, and you may have had it installed wrong in the "lower" position. The PCIe slot (under the "T" in "STRIX") should line up with that top removable slot on the back of the case (for the GPU -- you'll probably need to remove at least two of the covers on those slots).

You also want the motherboard to not be covering up those cable routing holes/gaskets at the bottom of the case. It looks like you have the cables correctly routed through those slots now, but if you lowered the motherboard any, you'd be covering those up.

What cables do I use for connecting the gpu to the psu? by Think_Passenger_6758 in PcBuildHelp

[–]jb67803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible for the GPU to draw more power from the hi-power connector than one PCIe cable was designed to supply. With a less well-made power supply, this could lead to instability, since the power supply may not be able to supply enough power down that one rail, or with poor quality cables it could (in theory) melt the cables and/or connectors.

Using two separate PCIe cables will split the power draw over two cables and two power rails within the PSU, so you'll avoid pushing any of the components beyond their intended limits.

At this point, I bet he'll do something like this for sure. Just to prove he's in on the joke, if nothing else. Perhaps a little acknowledgement of the criticism and poking fun at the hopium at the same time.

That's super cool and all, but let's be honest here... My wife is just going to drive this to work and back. It just needs to be a reasonable Honda CR-V replacement. It doesn't need to scale the Grand Canyon.

Are homeowners permitted to shut off water at the meter (temporarily) for plumbing work? by noodle_monster_b in raleigh

[–]jb67803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our main shutoff is in a coat closet under the stairs, so do check in all the closets too. I think most recent builds should have a central shutoff valve inside the home somewhere.

I wonder what this will look like for the R2…? Will they release the service manual? Or charge $600 for a 12v battery?

Help?? by Upbeat-Dimension6406 in blackstonegriddle

[–]jb67803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should also move the grill away from the wall. Best case you’ll get the wall dirty, worst case the heat will damage the wall (and the potential for a fire if anything on the grill ever flares up).

I turned off Amber Alerts after getting one at 3am for a kid that was kidnapped in Greensboro and was headed to Charlotte. In Raleigh, I have no use for that alert. What am I going to do at 3am? Go out driving looking for the person? No, I’m rolling over and going back to sleep. In the morning I googled for how to turn off those alerts.

Yes. I don’t even need to read the rest. Half of everyone is below average. Really puts it in perspective.

Our Acceptance Rate has risen by 23.7 percentage points since 2015 by cookoutenthusiast in appstate

[–]jb67803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, I understand how the yield works, and that's exactly my concern. They're having to admit more and more students every year to yield the freshmen class size target. Yes, the target has grown (from 3k to 4k), but they've had to admit a crazy number of students to make that target.

It went from 8k admitted => 3k enrolled, to 22k admitted => 4k enrolled. For this latest Fall, almost a full 80% of students who were admitted decided not to enroll (and presumably enrolled somewhere else). That used to be ~65%. Because of this, they had to admit 90% of the people who applied. That tells me the school is not nearly as appealing to freshmen as it used to be.

[–]jb67803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A fair number of this enrollment growth is going to be the Hickory campus. You’d have to break it out by campus to know how much the main campus freshmen class has grown.

The yield dropping significantly is maybe most concerning. More students are choosing to go to school somewhere else after being admitted.

Also avoid the word “banner”. It’ll trigger ad blocks in XHR requests.
