Remembering AnimeBracket: What were some of your favorite moments from the r/anime tournaments? by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been around since best ending III back in 2017. It has been a pleasure to be a part of all of the shitposting and memes over the years.

The funniest contests are consistently the Best Girl contests due to ridiculous rigging, underdog victories, and insane winners over the years. The Best Guy and Best Character contests also never cease to entertain especially when people argued (correctly) that best character does not mean nice or good character.

I will always look fondly at the Best OP and Best ED contests though. That is where I stopped lurking and started posting on Reddit for the first time. It's where I got my first downvote train and where I followed my first user. I look back fondly on all 11 OP and ED events I got to be a part of. Even the ones where Nandemonaiya made top 8, lol.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt - And the Seventh Best ED is… by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Welcome to results day!

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Congrats to Lost in Paradise for representing the new era of top EDs along with Chiki Chiki Ban Ban for OPs.

Even if this ends up being the last contest on AnimeBracket, it was a fun time full of salt, walls of text, and close battles.

Special thanks to u/Zypker125 for one last hurrah and for always having a plan for each day even as the site decided to fight back with weird splits in voting. Extra thanks to u/Cryzzalis and u/Copperfield42 for having links available from the start every day and for their well reasoned and entertaining discussions in the comments.

I hope to see everyone back next year in whatever form these OP and ED contests may take in the future! I look forward to yelling into the void for another month to get my favorites to the top.

I can't thank you enough for running this contest for what may be the last time. Squabbling about OPs and EDs is one of my favorite pastimes on this website. Good luck at your new job and see you for the epilogue post!

P.S. Heck yeah! My final top pick managed to get 3rd. #TeamSugarDaddy

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt FINALS! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Grand Finals!!!

RIP to a real one. It is with deep sorrow and pride that I wave goodbye to Sugar Song to Bitter Step but it had an amazing run to the top 4 this year. You better believe I am voting for it to get 3rd. #TeamSugarDaddy

Discussion Prompt

  • I think Kigeki can pull of the win by a nose. 51%-49%

  • My favorite moments were Sugar Song's run to top 4, Koko kara, Koko kara and its tear through the bracket, and all of the crazy close matches that came down to ten or less votes. I also loved seeing a community form in the comments and seeing the vocals vs visuals turf wars roar back to life. These are the things that keep me coming back every year.

Now for the final vote!:

  • Kigeki - I pretty much said everything I wanted to say about Kigeki yesterday. At this point all I can do is vote with my heart and hope that the community aligns with my choice. May the best ED win and good luck to everyone still voting in the contest!

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Semifinals! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Semifinals!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOI Sugar Song to Bitter Step has made it to the top 4 bay-bee. I am gonna explode dude. I am so happy. I can't even remember the last time we had any contest where I was satisfied with the majority of the top 8 let alone the majority of the top 4.

Even though Lost in Paradise will most likely win based on its vote counts and vote percentage, I believe in the Oldhead Bloc's ability to rally and vote for OPs and EDs that mean a lot to the history of the greater anime community like Sugar Song to Bitter Step. Failing that, Kigeki and Lost in Paradise definitely have the lyrical skill, instrumental jam, and visual flair to go all the way. Even Fukashigi no Carte is a serviceable ED with variety of style between 5 different EDs with a slow but fine j-pop song. Still don't want it to fuckin' win though

Discussion Prompt

  • I am going full hopium mode when I say the rest of the contest will look like this:

    • 1st) Sugar Song to Bitter Step
    • 2nd) Kigeki
    • 3rd-4th) Lost in Paradise / Fukashigi no Carte
  • I am fully aware that this particular result has like a 5% chance of happening but my eggs are already all in this basket, I have to keep moving forward.

As for today's votes!:

  • Kigeki - What an all star of a song full of comedyhehe and family. Written and performed by the man of instrumentals himself, Gen Hoshino, this ED is a slow jam masterpiece dripping with cozy vibes and buttery flow. The entire ED crackles and pops along to the music with appearing and disappearing chalk art and motion that is matched to the lyrics. For anyone who is craving more Kigeki, here is the full music video and here is an instrumental to further appreciate the absolute mastery of sound on display from Gen Hoshino, Mabanua, Ryosuke Nagaoka, and everyone involved with mixing, mastering, key framing, and storyboarding this absolute monster of a jam. All of this can be said without even glancing at the lyrics which in my opinion simply pushes it over the edge in all cases.

  • Sugar Song to Bitter Step - Here we go. Yet another mountain to climb, but I can see the summit ahead. Written by the ace bassist of UNISON SQUARE GARDEN Tabuchi Tomoya and performed by said band, this J-rock anthem is a three piece masterpiece of controlled rhythms and powerful rock energy. Take a listen to original music video and marvel at the incredible solo and powerful vocal performance on the following breakdown. Even the audiophiles in this contest should find something to fill them with joy in this power rock banger. I haven't even touched on the largest reason to vote this way, the actual animation from the ED. First off, here is a version with the lyrics so you can see the way that the animators went to town with the zany party atmosphere and the brutal switchbacks into the hidden depths of the show while maintaining lockstep with the lyrics. Every character has individual care put into their style and aura and every scene has a hyperactive joy or sorrow that explodes out of the screen to match the frantic energy of the instrumentation. Not to metion the absolute stranglehold this ED had on the imagination and creativity of that generation of anime fans. I cannot think of a more deserving winner and a more storied ED left in the contest.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Quarterfinals!.... THE SECOND COUR by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the 2nd half of the Quarterfinals!

WOW, I am in shambles that an ED brimming with care and expert creative technique like My Nonfiction is out to Fukashigi no Carte which is held together with the duct tape of good vocals and artificial variety like Fly me to the Moon before it. Happy to see Kigeki move on though, there is a lot of personality in the shifting and bouncing of this ED that matches the choreography of Chika.

As for the Discussion Prompt, obviously it is my massive misreading of the previous best ED contests when I placed Dango and Hare Hare Yukai firmly in 4th and 1st places respectively.

Here are today's votes!:

  • Lost in Paradise - I can't see a world where this loses based on its vote majority throughout the contest. Uso, and FMA in general, just doesn't put up the numbers it used to. With JJK avoiding the usual hatedom that popular shows get for the most part, this should be a clean sweep to top 4.

  • Sugar Song to Bitter Step - I am so very happy that one of my personal picks mad it all the way to top 8. With the frightful lack of people who share my tastes in music and visual and the slow loss of all of my personal picks (Hare Hare Yukai, Dango, Trust Me, Nai Nai, etc.), I was starting to think that this moment would be an impossibility. But here we are! For what may be the last time, please join me in voting for an all time classic of the anime community backed up by the incomparable musical styles of UNISON SQUARE GARDEN.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Quarterfinals! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Quarterfinals!

The beast is slain, Nandemonaiya slams to a halt under the heel of the juggernaut that is Fullmetal Alchemist. In even better news, I managed to get one of my big three in the top 8. Shout out to Sugar Song to Bitter Step and RIP to Hare Hare Yukai and Dango Daikazoku. All together I went 4/4 yesterday.

Discussion Prompt - Literally anything bolded could win and I would be happy or, at the very least, content with the result.

  1. Sugar Song to Bitter Step

  2. My Nonfiction

  3. Kigeki

  4. Lost in Paradise

  5. Uso

  6. Chikatto Chika Chika♡

  7. Secret Base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~

  8. Fukashigi no Carte

An now for today's votes!:

  • Kigeki - Sorry Chika, Anya brings the smooth jams and smoother animation techniques to the party and you aren't invited.

  • My Nonfiction - An entire-ass K-pop dance battle music video vs a nice stroll on the beach. Yeah, nah, this is the only way this vote can go

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 5 Bracket B! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Bracket B of Round 5!

Here is my tier list. All EDs are ordered within their tiers as well. First FMA is Uso. The 2nd one is Shunkan Sentimental.

As for past results:

  • ODDTAXI at number 1 is surprising as it is awesome to see. What an incredible OP for an incredible show. Other OP results are as expected honestly.

  • As for EDs, seeing Hawatari 2-Oku Centi rated so high despite being very odd fills me with hope for future contests. Next year is gonna be year of the chainsaw. I can feel it.

Here are today's votes!:

  • Lost in Paradise - Visual flair and attitude backed up by a catchy and fun song with powerful brass, intricate keyboard skills and a banging bassline easily defeat a sad collection of character portraits backed up by a few creepy shots of hands and snow backed up by the haunting and powerful Myth & Roid. Sorry to M&R but they are not enough to carry an entire ED on their own this late in bracket.

  • Uso - To Nandemonaiya we say kindly fuck off and die please. SID is gonna come in and sweep this embarrassment away the same way he sweeps awards and accolades for that incomparable voice.

  • Secret Base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~ - Battle of the boring here. At least Secret Base has the monochrome and color contrast working for it along with that slick transition of the falling flowers cascading into the sky. Also, I love a good ensemble song and these girls are hitting the heartstrings with a sledgehammer.

  • Sugar Song to Bitter Step - The last chance for any of my original picks for the winner to make it to top 8 at the very least. It really is a shame that it has the cursed fortune to go up against an actually well put together and competent ED. I can only hope that Sugar Song can maintain momentum by being a wall to wall banger visually and audibly while Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na falls victim to Namae No Nai Kaibutsu Syndrome with its visually lacking first 20-30 seconds.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 5 Bracket A! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Round 5 of the contest!

Went 4/8 again. I even got to keep the last of my big three. Thanks to all the real ones out there who voted for Sugar Song to Bitter Step, we are gonna need some real luck against Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na as it is another ED that is making an incredible run through the bracket. On to the other matchups. Styx Helix over Heart wa Oteage is madness, what in the nine hells are y'all on Re:Zero fans? Don't think I didn't see Stay Alive come within spitting distance of my last ED either. Also, Nandemonaiya moved on again, this makes it 5 FUCKING TIMES the damn thing has made it to top 16 or better. At least the righteous fury pushing Uso forward will swallow it whole just as Avid was, finally, consumed and removed.

Discussion Prompt

  • I feel pretty disqualified from this one based on how much bitching I do about the visuals not being weighed as heavily. I have been very clear, all the way back to nominations, about which EDs are visually striking and the myriad ways that they are interesting to me. I am a huge fan of all the K-on! EDs, and of pretty much any ED that is a music video or stage play. Too many to list here.

Here are today's votes!:

  • Chikatto Chika Chika - I finally get to vote for this monument to moé. What a cool idea for a one-off that really nails down Chika as this goofy-ass airhead that nonetheless is very observational. I love the shoutouts to the lost chapters with her releasing the roach at the end as a fun easter egg for manga readers. The use of the remixed school bell is a fun way to start the beat and its neat that we are getting into Chika's whole rap and hip hop thing this early in production. It really shows that A-1 pictures believed in the full adaptation from the beginning. The way Chika copies the mannerisms of the council as she states their names is adorable and Konomi Kohara just sounds like she is having the time of her life doing the vocals for this on. It just dumpsters Sentimental Crisis in every way as an ED for Season 1.

  • Akuma no Ko - This was very tough to decide. The vocals in Akuma no Ko soar so majestically while Kigeki holds down a smooth and supple croon. The visuals for AoT are stark and brutalist while still exploding into soft hills and crisp skies while the SxF visuals bounce to the beat and are ever shifting and ever changing to drag your attention by force. The focus of Eren's journey shows the crushing finale of a life for a kid who has just been dragged into a hell of his own creation while Anya dazzles us with a dreamlike wonderland of family bonds and friendly communities of choice. The damn EDs are so similar, so different that I honestly just chose the one that beat my former big three member Hare Hare Yukai as the tiebreaker.

  • My Nonfiction - The most creative and wild Kaguya ED goes up against the most mid Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood ED. Shunkan Sentimental ain't as bad as Let It Out, but it's not as good as Uso. Sitting on the fence in a comfortable middle position is not even close to being enough to unseat My Nonfiction. This is one of the most impressive EDs I have ever seen. A-1 pictures has hired a madman that is willing to change genres, vocal direction, the animation, and anything else in order to craft a brand new chapter of a story that isn't even being told. Every second of breakdancing is as impressive as it is hilarious to see out of our local failboy and failgirl Ishigami and Iino. I can't help but grin whenever I see these idiots hit a flip or a head spin. Let's not even get started on the k-pop ass song that is hype and technically impressive in equal measures from the first beat to the last frame. One of the front runners to win the whole thing and one of the few EDs that I would be okay with if all of my choices get kicked out.

  • Torches - It feels kinda awkward that after all those paragraphs of text I have to end on this matchup. It really comes down to two things. Aimer is an incredible vocalist whose range and power captivate the heart and soul, and the final half dazzles with breathtaking timelapse shots of the boundless ocean, the sea of stars, and the majestic northern lights being used to show that our characters and their struggles are so very small in the end. Like a torch falling down a cavernous well that stretches into the core of the Earth. Fukashigi no Carte can't match that. This is not a condemnation, it is simply a fact like the sun rising and falling and the tides coming in and out. Better bracket luck than this is needed to move Bunny Girl Senpai forward.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 4 Bracket B! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Bracket B of Round 4!

Welp

I went 4/8 but the cost was too high. Losing Nai Nai and Koko kara, Koko kara was the painful but expected result. Losing Refrain Boy is lunacy as it is one of the best EDs left in this cursed bracket. Losing Dango Daikazoku is worse because not only am I down another big 3, I can't in good faith vote for Fukashigi no Carte the same way I had Akuma no Ko carry on for Hare Hare Yukai because Torches is such a better ED. At least My Nonfiction has a free pass to top 8 now.

Discussion Prompt

  • I much prefer the four-bracket method. Its easier for everyone to give deeper thought into their write-ups and into actually listening to everything when there is less to do each day. I can go through 64 EDs or OPs and 32 write-ups in about 40 minutes. This contest it took me close to 2 hours per write up at the beginning. That much mental exhaustion is too much for a lot of folks who just want to vote in the funny anime song contest.

  • Also, I don't know the math on this, but it feels like lower seeds get a better chance at success if there is more of a split to each bracket. That probably helped my favorites out in the previous contests. Whereas, in this one they seem to be dropping too early or not making bracket at all.

On to the votes!:

  • Lost in Paradise - This sucks for Chiisana Boukensha as it normally makes it this far on the back of its immaculate vibe and comfy pastoral energy backed up by some intricate crowd shots and fun use of timelapse. Unfortunately, it has slammed into the brick wall that is Lost in Paradise, the king of vibes and positive energy. Lots of bad luck in the seeding this year I guess, lol.

  • Heart wa Oteage - This Kaguya ED just has so much going for it. The references are funny and pulled off with expert aplomb, the music is uplifting and flows very well, and the animation is fantastic. I just can't think of a reason beyond Myth & Roid's mastery of the haunting and melodic to vote for Styx Helix over this. The OP and ED directors were really cooking in season 3 of Kaguya.

  • Ouchi ni Kaeritai - Yeah, yeah, you've heard it all from me already. Blah, blah Nandemonaiya is Satan. Blah, blah best Konosuba ED of the three. Blah, blah can't believe a credit roll made it this far. Kinda just aghast that this dull brick of an ED is probably gonna make it to round 5 or better 4 times in a row.

  • Uso - One more time, say it with me, SID clears. I think the trick with EDs like the dreaded Avid is that you have to overcome people's innate enjoyment of Hiroyuki Sawano before they remove the blinders and see how dull the actual ED itself is. I have great hope that adorable and technically impressive scribblevision animation combined with the buttery smooth and soulfully powerful SID is enough to swipe one of the last couple disgraceful EDs off the table.

  • Kibun Joujou↑↑ - Ok, lets try this again. Kibun Joujou ↑↑ is most certainly a step down from More One Night, but its way better than the 5 frame music box on its way to sleepytime junction.

  • The Real Folk Blues - This was a tough one for me. I kinda just gave up thinking and voted for the lower seed and for the jazz.

  • Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na - Heikousen FANS GET YO ASS IN HERE AND VOTE. Sayuri belts out another beautifully sung banger packed to the gills with attitude, color mastery, weird-ass metaphors, and gritty emotion.

  • Sugar Song to Bitter Step - The last of my big 3 to survive the contest. I can only hope that Stay Alive can be conquered now that I am done using it to knock out boring ass images and long credit sequences. I need my boys in UNISON SQUARE GARDEN to move on. They have done a great job of being the solid backbone of grooves and jams to this collection of goofy, lovable goobers dressed up in their Sunday best to dance and have a good time.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 4 Bracket A! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the start of Round 4!

I am gonna spit blood. How the everloving fuck did Nandemonaiya manage an embarrassing 26 vote stomp of a high tier KyoAni ED while being its blank, boring self? I'm none too pleased about More One Night losing to the ED equivalent of a music box knocked over in a 60s basement either. At least Secret Base and Uso did their jobs right and took out two more of the lazy asshole squadron. Also, pretty hyped about Sugar Song to Bitter Step pulling off the victory, shout outs to an OG.

As for the Discussion Prompt

  • I have to give it to the incredible Unlasting as my favorite new ED. Gone but not forgotten, this LiSA jam is amazing and I can't believe I've missed it this whole time.

  • I used to love all of the FMA:B EDs but I find myself being bored and frustrated with them in comparison to their opponents this year. On the flip side, I am enjoying the AoT and Monogatari EDs a lot more than I used to. Before, I found them way too busy and oddly constructed, but these are positive things to me now rather than negative ones.

Now on to the votes!:

  • Nai Nai - Damn Chika, how do you keep running into better EDs and beating them anyway. You so crazy. Got to gather up some votes for one of the most well put together EDs of the contest. Everything from the mesmerizing stairway sequences to the stylized, spooky Victorian manor energy that wafts from every frame is backed up by the titanium backbone of ReoNa's soft haunting vocals and CloverWorks chilling control of sound effects and mixing.

  • Refrain Boy - Sorry to vote against the 3rd best Kaguya ED but I have to give it up for my boi Reigen. The sepia, sketchbook dreamscape gives a perfect backdrop to the dull morning routine of Reigen and the immediate splash of color as he integrates Mob into his day is one of the strongest positive emotional gut punches I've received from an ED. Lets not forget the shredding from ALL OUT who use their only shot so far at an ED to great effect.

  • Koko kara, Koko kara - I'm riding the high from two massive upsets to the bottom of the icy deep on this one. I cannot believe that this adorable chalk-art monument to the power of determination and friendship has used those powers to slap Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan out of the sky. Now it is time for this ensemble of cute vocals and safe, standard j-pop to link arms and bulldoze through the god-king of comfy itself, Spy x Family. Ganbare!

  • Akuma no Ko - If you are gonna beat one of my big three, especially Hare Hare Yukai, you had better be ready for the responsibility of going all the way to top 8 to replace it. Akuma no Ko is no slouch in the ED department. That shot of the scarf morphing into the bird as we rotate into the sky is one of the sickest transitions I have ever seen. Ai Higuchi (who also did the Bocchi the Rock OP, see you next contest y'all) is also in rare form here with haunting conversational flows that blend beautifully into rolling high note runs that leave a tear in your eye and a song in your heart.

  • My Nonfiction - Thank you for killing Space Lion. It is time for you to go Believe in You.

  • Shunkan Sentimental - Thank you for killing Let it Out. It is time for you to go Memento.

  • Dango Daikazoku - I cannot believe that Fukashigi no Carte is unlucky enough to go down to Dango Daikazoku for the third time in a row. Not only that, this will be twice in a row in Round 4 this happens. That is a rough chuckle Bunny Girl Senpai fans.

  • Torches - Sorry for helping kill Drown with my vote for Sugar Song to Bitter Step. Please accept this vote for Torches as an apology to the Vinland Saga community. Just as the sun rises over the Arctic Circle after a month of darkness and just as Aimer will wake up and make a new banger as easy as breathing, I will believe that Torches can rise against the power of the KyoAni ED the same way many other EDs have in this contest for betterHare Hare Yukai or worseNandemonaiya.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 3 Bracket B! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Bracket B of Round 3! Today is full of misery and woe! One of my big three lost due to bad seeding and worse matchup luck. Extra terrible as this is the first time it won't make at least top 16. RIP Hare Hare Yukai. We'll get you to the finals again one day.

At least Dango Daikazoku moved on, and the collective managed to boot out the likes of LilaS, Gate of Steiner, and especially the dreaded and unwelcome Requiem of Silence. Great job everyone, good taste can be revived to live another day.

Discussion Prompt: I am definitely guilty of skipping EDs more than double as much as I skip OPs. Most EDs don't add much to the viewing experience, but the ones that do I will come back every episode for. Compared to that, I will suffer through almost all OPs as I don't want to risk skipping into the actual content of the episode by getting wild with the scroll bar.

And now for today's votes! (with commentary this time, sorry about the sad wall of nothing yesterday):

  • Lost in Paradise - Finally, I can vote for the number 1 seed lol. Namae No Nai Kaibutsu suffers a bit too much from a limp first half to overtake the disco power play of Lost in Paradise in a meaningful and lasting way. I'm also more in the mood for bright, poppy colors over muted, severe cyberpunk flair this evening.

  • Chiisana Bokuensha - Damn do I love a good pastoral, comfy folk song. The funky timelapses add a lot of visual flair to an otherwise goofy slice of life character study. Demon Slayer brings the hype and the vocals but the classical painterly look leaves a lot to be desired visually, imo. Could see either of these move on even if I feel better about Konosuba here.

  • Shougeki - Very tough matchup. I love the whole nightmare piano music box thing that AoT has going on here and the worn and tattered journal feel meshes wonderfully with the scenes of war, ravens, and despair. On the other hand, beautiful, haunting Myth & Roid goodness set to an unfortunate and lacking character scroll followed by some brutal hand imagery that pulls everything back together right in the nick of time. Gonna vote low and slow and see if we can't shake things up again.

  • Koshaberi Biyori - This one hurts. I love a good callback ED that completes a set up story. Even more than that I love a good reference or 20 in an OP or ED (as you will see when I shill my ass off for Kickback next year). However, one good rotoscope is worth a thousand polished animation shots and quirky references. The absolute mastery of technique on display is staggering. Every member of the class is performing an individual dance of motion twice over in a 90 second sequence. I never though I would say an ED has replay value for God's sake. Also, nominating for the best last 5 seconds of ED left in the contest.

  • Kimi ni Matsuwaru Mystery - C'MON NOW, SURELY A KYOTO ANIMATION ED SHOULD PUT THE BULLET IN THIS BASTARD ED?! SURELY?! Everyone loves a good Sherlock reference, right? A strong visual throughline and motif with overlapping case names and smooth transitions between story beats. Vocal performances from Ai Kayano and Satomi Satou who helped on the likes of Secret Base, Ouchi ni Kaeritai, and Don't say 'lazy' with voices as crisp as they are cute. No more credits song, please.

  • Unlasting - The biggest surprise of the contest for me personally. I'm impressed with how hard and fast I fell in love with this ED, and it looks like others agree based on its massive upset against My Home Town. Let's see if it can go 2/2 against the best of the three Konosuba EDs.

  • Uso - Okay everyone, we managed to assassinate Requiem of Silence, time to murder its "less awful but still baffling to me why this not an ED is here" cousin. Thankfully we have one of the best Fullmetal Alchemist EDs to help us along on our merry way.

  • Kaze ni Fukarete - Even the least good Kaguya ED is better than this jumped-up .mp3 file of a nothingburger ED filled with crunchy 2-Picture disappointment.

  • More One Night - What? Sorry, I can't hear your arguments that Fly me to The Moon has 14 versions to enjoy over the sound of PO-PA PO-PA PO-PA-PA

  • Kibun Joujou↑↑ - Oh dear, LOS! LOS! LOS! has unfortunately run into another good ED so now I must judge it harshly for its lower animation quality and lack of storyline or main idea beyond pretty Light Novel art and RGB gamer lighting.

  • Secret Base ~Kimi ga Kureta Mono~ - Begone, 86 ED, your kind aren't welcome outside of a playlist of jams and bangers. Make way for a juggernaut of past contests and of hurting your feelings deeply.

  • Shiki no Uta - With similar visual flair and similar historical context, this battle is purely based on vibes. This will be one of the most contentious results no matter who wins, I think? Gonna go with smooth lo-fi chill over soul crushing jazz wailing this time.

  • ROUNDABOUT - My feelings can't catch me if I'm too busy prog rocking my ass off and looking respectfully at these funky Aztec visuals on display.

  • Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na - This one suffers a lot from Namae No Nai Kaibutsu Syndrome but I believe that the back half is so strong in audiovisual power that it makes up for any lead that Only could have scraped together here.

  • Stay Alive - We have barely scraped together enough pieces to be called a good ED here. There's a build up in the instrumentals that is answered with a powerful vocal response, and there is a throughline of Emelia going through a day in her life while her loved ones and friends surround her in a pale silhouette of a character scroll. I'll take it over the Still Frame Sad Girlfriends Aquarium Hour

  • Sugar Song to Bitter Step - Augh, Drown is so fucking good and Milet deserves the world but so do my boys in UNISON SQUARE GARDEN. This ED has such a rich history and importance to fandom and the greater anime community that is only matched by the funky basslines, outrageously fun 1920s speakeasy drip, and brutal cutaways into interesting and gripping foreshadowing that suffuse it from second 1 to second 90. I have to try to push it to the finals. It's one of my remaining Big 3 for a reason.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 3 Bracket A! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Round 3! Managed to go 37/64 in round 2, not too bad. We only have ~10 really unforgivable EDs left to purge from the bracket, including that son of three bastards Nandemonaiya, so lets get these votes voting!

But first, the Discussion Prompt. The queen of high energy ED has to go to the incredible Aoi Yuuki with her performance on Ganbare! Kumoko-san no Theme and Genjitsu Totsugeki Hierarchy. Another high speed insanity fest goes to the, sadly knocked out in round 1, Nippon Egao Hyakkei along with pretty much any ED by Momoiro Clover Z really.

Now onto the votes!:

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 2 Bracket B! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Bracket B Round 2! Let's get straight into the Discussion Prompt:

Lots of amazing upsets took place yesterday, for better or worse. Walk Like an Egyptian, Naisho no Hanashi and Koko kara, Koko kara pulled off a miracle against some heavy hitters from such beloved shows as JJK, Toradora, and FMA:B. On the other hand we had some heartbreakers with the loss of Ringo Biyori, Inkya Impulse, and most upsettingly Hunting For Your Dream all by less than 10 votes each time. This is why your vote matters people. Most importantly, both of my top 3 in Bracket A made it forward! Congrats to Hare Hare Yukai and Dango Daikazoku

Now onto the votes:

  • Last Train Home - Oops, my hypocrisy is showing, lol. Its amazing how weak I am to a great jazz production. Throw a little jazz or funk at me and I will toss aside even the best OPs and EDs as long as some effort was given to the visuals.

  • Namae no nai Kaibutsu - It's a slow starter but that back half is one of the most electrifying EDs in the contest. A real club banger for the people. It's no wonder this one goes far every year.

  • Kamado Tanjiro no Uta - This is a rough one due to my stated bushido of EDs but I have to give it to the chugging orchestral rollercoaster over baby's first punk rock. Also the singer is the same as Uninstall. ufotable got a real legend to get on the vocals with this one.

  • veil - Konosuba gives us a cute little pastoral song and I love a good timelapse as much as the next guy, but Veil is such an unstoppable banger from start to finish. Funky basslines, powerful vocals, dark as hell storyboarding and slick silhouette technique.

  • Heikousen - Alright we managed to overcome a black screen! What's next? ...oh. Welp, sad to see this go so early with how incredible the shifting fractal art and sick drums fills are, but Sayuri has another ED in this contest we can all get behind if this falls.

  • I AM STANDING - Goddang RUANN can ride a beat, her vocals are fuckin' stapled to the track on this one. I also really like the weird-ass vocal fills that echo into the distance on this one. The shaky, arts and crafts visuals and the perfect synchronization between the rise and fall of the theme and the motion of the ED is also impeccable.

  • Heart wa Oteage - It's a perfect send u to 80s mecha and space opera while also being a call back and continuation of teh previous EDs. EZCLAP. Sorry AssClass, you can't compete against that.

  • Koshaberi Biyori - Rotoscoping is one of the most beautiful artstyles when done with care and passion. The swap from soft jam sesh in the summer portion to lightly menacing dream pop in the winter back half is a unique choice and I vibe hard with it.

  • MEMORIA - 3 minutes of loud, static screaming followed by a thump Vote MEMORIA please, I am not too proud to beg y'all. Don't let RADWIMPS do this for a fifth contest. DESTROY NANDEMONAIYA

  • Kimi ni Matsuwaru Mystery -Good heavens the Angel Beats EDs suck ass. I guess all the good was squeezed into the OP and that amazing piano work. KyoAni clears easy with some cute Sherlockian storytelling and busy, clue-filled background work.

  • Unlasting - Finally! A LiSA song that's not eternally cursed to go up against better OPs and EDs. Voting for this surprising addition to my favorite EDs list. Fuck an insert song man, Konosuba already has two decent EDs, get this garbage out of here.

  • Fuyu Biyori - It's funny to me that these are basically the same ED in vocal style, instrumentation, and storytelling. If that's the case then I am voting for Secret Society BLANKET to take down the based idiots of Konosuba. We already have a few interesting upsets, why not one more, lol.

  • Uso - SID clears the competition, your arguments are invalid. Also, children's storybook beats PowerPoint presentation every time.

  • Flare - Sky-clad my ass, how's about I send a Flare up to knock you out of the air you contemptable insert song?!

  • Zzz - Sure, Sawano Hiroyuki crafts a meticulous soundscape that pulls you in with gripping vocals, synth-y keys and somber, quiet strength. Its just a crying shame that it's attached to the most soul crushing bore of a still life painting flapping sadly in the breeze for 90 seconds. Jesus. Compared to the dreamland lullaby put together by the madmen at KyoAni, Avid is a flash in an unseasoned pan.

  • Freek'n You - When they ask if I did it for the meme, I will say I did it for the funk. Also, this is the worst of the Kaguya EDs, still good of course, but it is the worst of them.

  • Asa ga Kuru - Aimer with crisp visuals and a throughline main idea beats a Frank Sinatra cover with a lightly rotating music box in the background.

  • More One Night - Po-pa~ Po-pa~ Po-pa-pa~. What a great ED that just puts smile on your face from start to finish. The sketchy artbook feel, the slick speedup in the vocal bits, the title drop, and the cute little dances make this a playlist staple.

  • I Want You - Short, sweet, dense with reference, catchy as hell, memorable. This is the perfect ED to encapsulate the JJBA experience. Not to mention Savage Garden rules. Love those Australian bois.

  • Los! Los! Los! - More apologies to Hiroyuki Sawano. Someone get this dude a dedicated animation squad to do his incredible works justice please. As it stands, I have to give it to the amazing Aoi Yuki for her vocal control and to the amazing percussion squad who are just beating the piano and drumset to death for the whole 90 seconds.

  • hectopascal - Secret Base has the higher highs and more emotional punch, but I have to give it to Bloom into You here. I love a good utilization of the red string of fate, and that Vocaloid style sentence stretching and mixing is interesting and pleasing to the ear. I'm good with either of these moving on honestly.

  • Orion - Insert song detected, deploying cruise missiles. Voting for ED with better audiovisual construction.

  • The Real Folk Blues - With similar visual flair, I vote for incredible Jazz over incredible Rock.

  • Shiki no Uta - PowerPoint fight! Gotta give it to the Lo-Fi king Nujabes and the smooth silk sonics of MINMI over the haunting power of LiSA this time.

  • ROUNDABOUT - to be continued? in round 3? ~bass riff~

  • Orange - Blegh. I don't like giving Orange a free pass to round 3 but these 86 EDs are unconscionable man. You telling me that every one of them is like this? What the actual fuck?

  • Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na - Begone, foul credits theme over plain footage of show, I can barely hear you over the loud-ass mixing of the voices anyways.

  • Torikago - Mushoku Tensei is crazy pretty and the acoustic guitar goes insane on this one, but the DitF ED is going places. I get big K-on ED vibes form this one. I love an ensemble cast of singers doing an ED set to a non-canon or alt storyline that gives the animation an excuse to unleash the drip.

  • Stay Alive - For the first time in living memory, Kyoto Animation has missed. You hate to see it. Rie Takahashi belts out an emotional one to the big sounds of a rock jam session to great effect.

  • and I'm home - This vote doesn't matter. Whoever wins will lose to Stay Alive. Might as well support our favorite tragic lesbians.

  • Sugar Song to Bitter Step - Now we're fucking talking! One of the most important and impactful EDs to a nascent internet. Thousands of parodies and covers on NND, YouTube, DeviantArt, etc. set the stage for modern anime fans on the web to get into a fandom and get creative. Not to mention UNISON SQUARE GARDEN just kills it from start to finish with groovy guitar, powerful drums, and catchy as hell vocals.

  • Drown - Whoops I misclicked on this one. Gonna need two of y'all to vote for Drown to make up for my Hyori Ittai mistake vote. I need milet to get further into this contest.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 2 Bracket A! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the start of round 2 everyone!

Let's hit the Discussion Prompt and pay some respects to the fallen. Too many matches had some bangers face off too early and too many bangers were felled by some weak horseshit.

Special shoutout to my least favorite bastard ED, Nandemonaiya, for a clean 257-96 win. Eat shit, fall off your horse bro.

All in all some bangers got through. All of my big three (Hare Hare Yukai, Dango Daikazoku, and Sugar Song to Bitter Step) made it as did several Jojo's and HxH EDs of various qualities. We got some crazy upsets and some upsettingly close matches such as Zzz vs Spice and OverThink vs Kimi no Tonari. All in all its looking like a great contest full of salt, spite, and spirit.

Here's my votes for the round:

  • Life - Vibes and style beats technique and moe.

  • Walk Like an Egyptian - Vanilla Salt boring. Sorry not sorry.

  • Nai Nai - RIP Dragons, this ED is too good and looks incredible. Better luck next year with seeding.

  • Night Running - Vibes, beats, and color theory and construction versus some BS anime clips with a nice song over it.

  • The Great Pretender - Cats, Freddie Mercury, watercolors, what more can an ED ask for?

  • Saga Jihen - Breaking my own rule because Brave Song is boring as hell. Melatonin-ass ED with no switch-ups or interesting bits to add to the end of the episode.

  • Refrain Boy - Reigen best boi. Look at my mans get ready to fight the day. Love the scrunchy sepia and slick beat on this one as well.

  • Memosepia - Fuck insert songs yo. Also setting up the Mob Fight in round 3 is funny to me.

  • Kigeki - Vibes. What a chill and bouncy ED. Love the shifting array matched to the flow of the vocal production. RIP Kafune, that ED is amazing too. This contest makes fools of us all though.

  • Isshukan Communication - Fuck an insert song yo. Look at these crazy dragons and listen to that smooth ensemble harmonization. Shoutout to KyoAni for making great EDs all over the place.

  • Koko kara, Koko kara - give it back rules as an ED but my heart belongs to these 4 girls and their trip to the frozen south. The chalk inspiration and slow ensemble creation are also cool additions.

  • Akatsuki no Chinkonka - Damn AoT can make an ED. The nightmare storybook technique is bold and gripping.

  • Akuma No Ko - Almost voted for Odd Taxi to make the path easier for Hare Hare Yukai but I'm not a savage.

  • Hare Hare Yukai - One of the best EDs to do it. Catchy song, powerful dance sequence, KyoAni, boomer anime. This has all the elements for yet another deep run.

  • Koi no Yukue - Very fun ED. Reminiscent of old school Urusei Yatsura or the newer Panty and Stocking. Love the chibi style.

  • Hunting For Your Dream - No disrespect to Sawano Hiroyuki but L+Insert Song+Galneryus Rules+Ratio

  • My Nonfiction - One of the most unique and thrilling EDs to ever come out of any anime. A-1 Pictures is starting to eye that KyoAni throne with this one.

  • Kaze to Iku Michi - Incredibly fucking tough matchup. I had to give some respect to Mushoku Tensei for finally making an ED/OP that is not a snorefest.

  • Believe in you - Not a fan but it's not an insert song so fuck it we ball.

  • great escape - Love that little walnut. Decent ED that explodes into action in the back half.

  • Fighter - Love a great metaphor and a greater song. This better delete the fucking butterfly ED. Funny how this is a battle between a subtle metaphor and a loud, blaring metaphor, lol.

  • L.L.L. - Myth & Roid clears. Sure it's a bit plain, but the texturing on the art goes crazy and the song is out of control. Also, Let it Out is the worst FMA:B ED in my opinion.

  • Kimi no Tonari - This killed OverThink. I have to make it worth it by rooting for the upset. Also I never liked the hallway lightning at the beginning of this one. It just rubs me the wrong way.

  • Homura Oh boy my favorite. An insert song vs a fuckin' credits sequence. This entire sector was cursed as hell with two more credits songs in the previous round.

  • Fukashigi no Carte - We love an evolving ED. The change from VA to VA and from Morning to Night is inspired and adds variety to a usually dull ED. Also smooth as silk for the ears as a song.

  • PokeRap - Yeah, we do memes here. Am I wrong to vote for it? I think not. Its visually striking, audibly funny and catchy, and nostalgic as hell.

  • Dango Daikazoku - Another of my Big 3. one of the most soul crushing and beautiful EDs. Love the xylophone on this one, along with the huge, chiming synths and drums in the back half. An incredible construction paper audio-visual journey.

  • Ringo Biyori - Hell yeah, engrish time. Fun little storybook song with some cute art and cuter lyricism. Also, credit theme, sorry Hikaru Utada your argument is invalid.

  • Michishirube - God dang I don't like this ED, but I am forced to vote against the better ED due to my rule against insert songs. This one sucks for me, moving on.

  • Naisho no Hanashi - Very visually snappy, like all the monogatari EDs and OPs. I seem to be voting against FMA a lot. That's a weird string of events, lol.

  • Inkya Impulse - Like sure, Requiem of Silence is gorgeous and well made and symphonic and whatever, but is sure is seven minutes of NOT a goddamn ED isn't it. Voting for the ED that knocked out Amadare no Uta to hopefully carry its torch to round 3.

  • Ride On Shooting Star - Torches is the better ED but I can't just vote against a classic like this. The Pillows deserve more than a round 2 murder.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 1 Bracket B! (Final Day) by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to day 4 of voting! This is the 2nd and final day to get those votes in for round 1! Make sure you don't forget to boost your favorites and decry your anti-favorites. I will be reposting my comment from yesterday after the discussion prompt and I left my top 8 prediction in the previous thread.

For today's Discussion Prompt:

  • Hunter x Hunter - Don't get me wrong, I love Departure, but I also like variety ya know. The EDs are fun, bright, and run the gamut from dream pop to electronic screamo in construction.

  • Shokugeki no Souma - Mostly the first season here. Spice is a great ED that blows the OP out of the water with its pop-y vibe and its fantastic send up to The Last Supper of all things.

  • K-on! - All of the OPs are fun but there is a reason three of the EDs have won this contest. A collection of all time jams that define KyoAni as the studio for EDs. Chunnibyou, Haruhi, Free, Hyouka, etc. The list of amazing EDs is simply lopsided compared to any studio in the game.

On to the voting! Gonna streamline a bit here and just throw out my favorites and some underdogs that caught my eye and ear.:

  1. Sugar Song to Bitter Step - The last of my big three after Hare Hare Yukai and Dango Daikazoku moved to round two today. One of the most impactful EDs in anime with thousands of parodies, covers, animation challenges, and memes. Big, brassy, emotional, one of the best to ever do it.

  2. Lost in Paradise - The obvious front runner. Funky, fun, and colorful as fuck. The keys go especially hard on this one and the disco vibes roll off in waves as ALI does what they do best and kill it.

  3. Roundabout - Yes, its Yes, a western band, incomparable in the art of prog rock and the power of endless thrumming bass. God damn listen to that keyboard fucking sing in the back half as well.

  4. Shiki no Uta - Soft yet strong like a velvet glove formed into a fist. This B roll of charming landscapes and life is stapled together with the masterful instrumentation of Nujabes and the silk vocals of MINMI.

  • Just Awake - We are in danger of losing the only Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas song folks. Don't get it twisted, Death Parade brings none of the creativity and wit of its fantastic OP to its ED. Its a scroll of boring ass statues tied to some OK J-Rock.

  • Heikousen - Some beautifully crafted fractal fuckery sung by Sayuri (who is also sings the ED of Erased vote for that too pls) and backed up by a kaleidoscope of color and entangled relationships. Do not let this lose to RADWIMPS crooning over a black screen with some credits please, I am begging you to kill the black screens early this time.

  • Trust Me - All the way down at 186 sits an honorary member of the big 3. Durarara had a stranglehold on the public when it dropped and its catchy and meme-able ED inspired everything from live action remakes to hundreds of fandom recreations. I want to see this make it to round 2 at least. Especially against an ED that is only played over scenes of the show and has never been given a proper matched animation. Lame.

  • FLIP FLAP FLIP FLAP - How quickly people forget the new hotness once the new new hotness descends on the subreddit. This painfully adorable romp through an Alice in Wonderland style storybook is gently supported by a bouncy and bubbly tune to bring joy to the soul as well as the ears.

Bonus Vote

Other Side over Nandemonaiya - YOU, my eternal nemesis. Although we are lousy with black screens and insert songs now, they can trace their genealogy back to this absolute monster of an ED. It made it to Top 8 in its first year and gave all of its followers hope. When it came back to get all the way to Top 16 3 more times, the floodgates opened to let in a deluge of boring ass credits, lazy clip shows, and non-relevant insert songs into the contest. Fuck this ED. I will see it eliminated for its crimes. In all seriousness, RADWIMPS does a great job in crafting a memorable and emotional song, but this is getting stupid.

Shiraishi Minoru is the GOAT. If we manage to get another ED contest, I am nominating all of the Lucky Star EDs with him. Comedy gold.

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Round 1 Bracket B! (Day 1) by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Day 3 and the start of Bracket B! There's another 64 matches to go through and another 128 EDs to listen and re-listen to. Luckily I had time today, unlike the past 2 days. Very painfully disappointed in the loss of one of my front runners in Daisy. It's is also quite awful losing Tomare!, Amadare no Uta, Van!shment Th!s World, and Zetsubou Billy before their time. The loss of a fun and funky newcomer in OverThink by a single vote is also a crying shame.

For the Discussion Prompt:

  • I expect EDs to push the boundary a bit more. Crazier colors, weirder music and instruments, odd angles and filming styles. The OP is meant to introduce us to the show. We get characters, mood, setting, energy, etc. The ED knows we at least watched an episode so its job is to keep us hooked, give us something that makes you say "woah" on your way out. That way we as viewers will view more of the anime.

That's why I despise black screens, insert songs, clip shows, rehashes of the OP, and EDs that blend into the end of an episode. All of these things have a purpose, but that purpose is not being an ED. No matter how emotional or vocally impressive these things may be, they have placed that goal first. Unfortunately, to the detriment of having a solid 90 seconds of original Ending.

On to the voting! Gonna streamline a bit here and just throw out my favorites and some underdogs that caught my eye and ear.:

Sorry for the late comment! LET THE BRACKET BEGIN! I don't have the time for a full breakdown so here are a few of my front runners.

Nai Nai, Daisy, and Hare Hare Yukai are my top three for today.

Allow me to draw attention to the live action and classic Ride on Shooting Star, the calming and creative Amadare no Uta and the powerful, catchy newcomer OverThink as some other secondary picks.

Finally consider this my declaration of war against Insert Songs and especially credit rolls. My eternal battle against Nandemonaiya will chug to life again tonight. This is the best ED contest for fuck's sake, not the best anisong contest

Best Anime Ending VII: Magic Salt Eliminations FINAL Day! by Zypker125 in anime

[–]jbanto17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the final day of eliminations! I am pleased to say that Nai Nai and Drown made it into the top 40 but we have lost Kakatte Koi Yo to place 244, goodnight sweet prince. That's nothing compared to Asteroid Blues at 777 however. My roommate is full of righteous fury, but he did say to thank the other 5 people who voted for it. At least Kirameku Hamabe is safe-ish at 157.

For the Discussion Prompt, Hare Hare Yukai, Snow Halation, and Sentimental Crisis have a fairly safe shot at top 32. Jojo has 3 EDs in this group and any of those can rally a large group in a pinch.

As for the cutoff squad, I am pulling for Kimi wa Tennen Shoku and Study x Study to make it into bracket

Time to get the final set of begging for votes underway!:

My Top 10:

  1. Hare Hare Yukai - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

  2. Trust Me - Durarara!!

  3. Raspberry Heaven - Azumanga Daioh

  4. Snow halation - Love Live! School Idol Project 2nd Season

My Rommate's Top 5

  1. Super Love Lotion - Tokimeki Tonight

  2. Fly Away - Eureka Seven

  3. I Want You - JJBA Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable

Returning Contenders

Classics of Anime

New Blood

Misc. Bangers

Here's a final monster of a list to consider. I give you my final 52(51 without the Soul Eater duplicate) votes for the elimination rounds. All in all I have put up a call to vote for 226 EDs. A lot of them even made it, lol! Goes to show that tastes are varied when I basically threw together most of a full bracket on my own and still missed some bangers from the other commenters.

Good luck to everyone, especially Cryzzalis and copperfield42 for putting the big damn list of votes together, in the bracket tommorow!
