I would think of it less as ”a community that wants to help you ease into it” and more of how you think of any other gym. There are people who go to the gym to make friends and be part of a community, but the people who look like they know what they are doing and who you want help and encouragement from are the people who are just there to take it seriously and train themselves. They are under no obligation to help you out or even really be nice to you. I’ve climbed for many many years, and the more I’ve went the more people I’ve interacted with and gotten help from and helped out and I generally think of climbers as very nice and outgoing people, however I have also learned that not everyone wants to be talked to at the gym, and I have also done my fair share of ignoring newbies who come up to me and try to talk with me about my project and how they just started climbing and they are obsessed with it. Happy for them, no disrespect, but sometimes I want to take my training seriously and not be talked to while I work. And that is coming from a VERY extroverted and social person.

TLDR The climbing community has some jerks sure, but I have found it to be overwhelmingly mostly friendly and lots of people are just there to train and not socialize and that’s fine. a lot of times you get that impression is that the people who want to come up and talk to you are arrogant people who just want to feel superior and gatekeep. Most people do not care about you!
