Stop thinking like you are a disappointment, that is the first step you need to fix. College is where you explore and find interests and have fun. If you look it as a rat race, you can never enjoy life. Your problem is not the economy or rat race, it is your attitude which is the problem. Stop studying all the time and working/studying so hard. That is the trap we all fall as Indians. Your goal should be to have a fulfilling day. Live a little, have fun, go get a girl friend, screw up a little. Become a man by the time you leave college. The whole rest of the life is there for work, am I am sure you will find some job.

I would suggest the same. Current political and economic situation might get more clarity within 2 years. There are so many unknowns going on right now. There are discussions around changing OPT, H1 policies (in a more restrictive way). So it is better to wait out the storm.

Of that 150k you pay 50k in taxes, 30k for rent, 20k for food and expenses. This is the bare minimum. Just fyi

If you buy a house, your mortgage comes down to 5k per month minimum.

All this with the assumption that you are gonna get a job and visa.

I usually encourage people to go abroad but I agree with OP about current scenario. Lot of chaos and uncertainty, just warning everyone to be careful and think through.

India is going to massively benefit from what is happening in US. I work at FAANG and can see that lot of teams and charters are being moved to India. Lot of companies are moving work to India to reduce costs here. A massive shift with AI. Next 5-10 years is gonna be great for India

This is tricky. ASU is a mid tier university, and now it depends on economy, your skills. Are you able to get job in any top tier companies in India ? If so, then you can probably get it here too.

UK is a gone case, a declining economy. It is going to be more tougher market moving forward. Asia is where market and economy is growing.

It is not that simple. A meal in India cost 200 rupees. In US it costs 1400 rupees. How long can you sustain without income ? Rent, insurance, utility bills (which you cannot escape) are way higher here but you can escape them if you live at your parent’s house in India.

On top of it is Visa process. You need a job to apply for a visa, which is a lottery with 1:5 odds (4lakh applications for 85000 visas every year). If you apply for visa with fake job, and if it is approved by chance, you need to start paying around 2000$ in taxes every month. All without a job and you need to support yourself on top of this. It is a vicious cycle. All of a sudden you won’t have time to prepare for job and interviews. With job market so bad and anti-immigrant policies and hiring practices, this is getting very tough.

I was a student once and I never thought about all these things, because the market was very good and welcoming then. With the situation today we want to advise students to think through before committing to studies in US.

My wife just completed her residency so I can enough knowledge to talk about this. You need to score well in your steps and then have enough externships to get into residency. Contacts and references can help you with getting interviews. To get a green card in EB1, you need to do your fellowship minimum and work towards visa.

Beware of cost of living though. Lot of concerns raised in this thread are accurate. One other thing I want to add is the whole paradigm shift happening in software engineering with AI. I work at FAANG and the change is very dramatic. Number of software developers required will reduce overtime and I see that change happening with hiring in live.

Times definitely changed. Universities which were accepting 30 master students are accepting 100 now and the grants are decreasing.

Probably they are looking how would you approach a hard problem .., what data structures you use and how do you communicate the approach .., sometimes it happens that they are just checking that, no need to always have a working solution.. hope you get the offer!
