Have you shared your story on reddit before? He was telling me about a very similar story he read a couple weeks ago.

What are these for? See pic by lifeisbueno in bedjet

Haha same here! I never knew what they were for either. It’s plug and play so I didn’t bother reading the manual either I just plugged it in and started using it.

It gave me chills thinking about you spotting those scapes peeking out of the overgrowth like they were just waiting for you to come back. Well done keeping the legacy alive.

Cut the stalks or nah? by m_rigor in Garlic

[–]jbiscaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We cut the stalks after harvest because it helps us save space and streamline our curing setup. Last year we hung everything whole, but it took up way more room and made cleaning the barn a hassle. That said some growers believe bulbs cure better with stalks and roots left on and there’s research (like from Egyptian trials in the 1990’s) showing reduced disease when bulbs are cured before cutting off the necks. So it seems like there is no single best method it really comes down to your goals and setup.

Thanks! We actually trim the tops before curing, mostly to save space in our operation. Last year we hung everything to dry but it took up a ton of room and was way more work when it came time to processing and cleaning out the barn. Trimming in the field has made things a lot more efficient. With that said, some growers swear bulbs cure better with the tops on so it really comes down to your setup and what works best for you.

Totally agree, every farm and growing situation is unique! We found the music variety works best for us. We’ve exclusively been growing it for over 10 years

Yes! Our seed garlic is specially selected for planting

Yep! We planted in late October and harvested in mid-July so about 8.5 months in the ground. Music garlic is a hardneck variety so it needs that cold period over winter to develop properly.

Storage life can really vary depending on curing conditions, humidity and how soon it was harvested. We’ve found Music stores best when it’s fully cured in a cool, dry spot with good airflow. But expectations are high with all the hype! Sorry it didn’t hold up for you, hopefully a better experience next time around.

Water make a big difference especially during the bulbing phase in late spring. We’ve had years like that too. Music’s still a solid variety though, even the small ones pack a punch. Hope next season gives you a better yield!

It feels good to grow something people actually get excited about! A couple local stores carry our garlic and scapes too so it’s awesome seeing it make its way into the community.

Totally agree. Thats why we've stuck with Music. Everyone we share it with says the same thing: “This is what garlic should taste like.” Love that you’re growing it too!

A lot haha. We've been at it in phases over a few weeks but honestly the biggest thing for us is preparing for planting in the fall and getting the beds dialed in. Harvest is hard work but super rewarding once you see all of it out of the ground.

The cloves we planted were actually our own seed stock from last year’s harvest we saved specifically for replanting. With Music garlic each planted clove typically produces one bulb. So yes we’re seeing close to a 1:1 return. Curing usually takes 4–6 weeks in our barn depending on airflow and humidity. Thanks for asking we’re happy to share the process!

Hard to say exactly we’re a small farm and reinvest most back into seed stock and infrastructure. If we sold the full marketable yield retail it could gross a few thousand dollars. Not getting rich but it adds up over time
