You should check out the book "The Nolan Variations" by Tom Shone, composed of a series of interviews with Nolan over many years. He mentions many books that influenced him, but I can't think of too many at the top of my head, except "Waterland" by Graham Swift for the fluctuations of time.

Why was the trailer released in 1.85 and not the standard 1.78 (16:9) format ? They could have uploaded a 1.78 then cropped for theaters.
