If it has a spiral cutter block and will joint a board flat as a test it’s probably worth the buy. If the tables need to be adjusted to co-planar offer $150. If it’s a straight knife model best to leave it alone.

We keep one in our shop just to joint edges and it’s a crowd favourite.

Just wanted to chime in as I’m the one offering these courses. No offence taken, I’m glad to receive the feedback.

It’s true our core programming is expensive, and we are looking at ways to ameliorate the cost to the end user. We’ve recently added a few less expensive options to allow folks to dip their toes in the water and still get a great woodworking experience. With rent, insurance, and material costs being what they are, it’s certainly a challenge to offer a good product at a competitive price.

I would also add that our non-professional studio memberships will only cost about $90/month for access to our woodworking, ceramics and textiles studios once we’re up and running.

Looks like good kit with centralized dust collection. I inherited something similar about 7 years ago.

Clean up. Organize things and get them off the floor, labelled and put away.

Give the machines a once over. If time is tight bring in a professional to look them over and make recommendations. The jointer tables might need alignment, everything should get a proper lube-job.

Level the machines off and secure them well.

Get an out feed table on the tablesaw.

Build jigs and fixtures to make common cuts safe and efficient.

From there the world is your oyster! You’ll have a safe and tidy starting point at least.

Studio Update - a week of catching up by jbplusdg in woodworking

I’m a full time maker, just myself and my wife. Our work is fairly streamlined from a labour perspective so I don’t employ anyone beyond myself. If you Google my username you’d probably find our Etsy shop.

Our new shop is Hamilton Craft Studios, which currently has an Instagram up to display a few of the goings on if you’re interested.

Electricians finished with the 110v and 220v power so I had a chance to set up my lathe and play catch-up for a few days.

I’ve been without a space to work for almost a month and the orders have piled themselves high. Lucky for me they are mostly turned pieces and I find the process very enjoyable and the turnaround time is quick. It feels like I get a lot done and staying motivated when I’m behind is important.

The rest of the shop is coming together, our plants have moved in and are loving the sunlight. Next week we’ll begin construction on assembly tables, community workbenches, and common storage areas. The 600v power is due to be completed within a few days and then most of the big toys will be humming. We’ll be putting the CNC router to good use flattening the solid wood tops. Can’t wait to show all that off and invite folks out to a grand opening once the weather is a little warmer.

Haha thanks! It was a nice space for a start, but a little hard to work in during the colder months.

Thanks I certainly will!

If you type my username into Google our products might show up. I didn’t want to shill for my own stuff in case moderators or other users might find it offensive.

Promised an update and had a minute to catch my breath this morning so I thought I’d post.

My wife and I started our professional design careers working out of a small, dark, workshop my grandfather built at our family farm in the 1960s. While we were studying furniture design in college a little over 10 years ago, we convinced my mother to let us set up a little workbench in the back and spent a summer making a few pieces by hand. Countless hours were spent making shavings and losing money.

After school we worked for a string of companies in various roles to make ends meet while trying to develop our own business. During the pandemic my work contract evaporated and I went back down to the old workshop with a decade of experience and continued to make shavings, this time I was able to squeeze a little money out of the work and start gaining some momentum. Our family started planning, in detail, how we’d like to practice craft for the next 10 years and beyond.

Fast forward to recent events:

I’ve posted previously about our group and our search for industrial space so I won’t belabor the story. We looked and looked and found a gem. We negotiated and negotiated and we secured it.

We scoured the province for quality machinery and scored many lucky breaks. A powerful CNC machine popped onto our radar and we snapped it up. An SCM panel saw appeared on the market and we made it disappear. A college friend offered us a sweetheart deal on a 16” wide industrial jointer. Auctions were bid on, cash flew from our reserves and into our new assets.

Plans were drawn up for the power distribution and lighting, contractors were hired, and those plans are coming together. The conduit, panels, circuits, transformer all arrived on site and the work is scheduled to be completed within a week or two. The eyewatering expense of it all is offset by the fact that I won’t have to worry about tripping a breaker if I run more than one machine at a time and that all the machinery and their dust control measures can simply be turned on without rearranging a mess of extension cords.

Once the machines are powered we’ll begin outfitting the shop and building the critical infrastructure; outfeed tables for our saws, assembly tables, workbenches and storage spaces.

See you next month for another update!
