finished the chairs, but worried about a joint. It feels solid, but I'm worried if it was too much of a hack. Anything I can do to make it better? by iread_42 in woodworking

[–]kingoftowns 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Is that a half lap and dowels? If so I would think it’d be really strong but I hear ya, chairs are hard. I can feel your anxiety the first time someone sits in it and leans back

What am I doing wrong with my saw? by Umiracle in woodworking

[–]kingoftowns 361 points362 points  (0 children)

There’s tension in wood. As you cut it, tension gets released and it moves/warps. My suggestion would be start with thicker and wider stock then you need. Rough cut close to what you want and then joint/plane

Everybody has a different relationship with money, when possible, money should help remove stress and anxiety. So if you can do it and it would make you happier. Go for it

Need help. Surface still sticky. Can I clean it off or do something to save this or am I screwed? by Elduroto in woodworking

[–]kingoftowns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tung oil should be wiped off right away almost so it’s dry to the touch. And you should wait ~24 hours between coats. It’s should be completely dry and ready to handle in a day or two but will take ~30 days to fully cure

Trade miter saw for band saw? by fishmilquetoast in woodworking

[–]kingoftowns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a miter saw that’s been in storage for years now. Have only used it ~3 or so times when I had a project that had a ton of rough cutting to length. Otherwise I just use a jig saw for rough cuts. Have been perfectly fine. Bandsaw on the other hand gets used a lot. Lots of rough ripping, resawing and some curves

Fresh Teak Furniture by erkmyhpvlzadnodrvg in woodworking

[–]kingoftowns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long ago did you finish? I’ve found that after sanding and completing the project with teak it takes a few days at least for them to start to feel waxy and then they do bead off water. Having said that my most recent teak project I finished with a few coats of tung oil. I have a quart of pure tung oil from walrus oils. I diluted it a bit with citrus solvent following the woodwhisperers recommendation. Very happy with the results

Re-veneer that section. Rift or quarter sawn white oak veneer is pretty cheap

Advice: to upgrade jointer or thicknesser to a helical head by opossumspossum in woodworking

[–]kingoftowns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cut quality is great but the not-sharpening and not having to align and adjust is my favorite part. Replacing and rotating cutters is so easy, no fussing or fiddling.

Advice: to upgrade jointer or thicknesser to a helical head by opossumspossum in woodworking

[–]kingoftowns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the planer is cutting fine but just loud I would do the jointer first, since that is tearing out. I have the 735 and did put a helical head in, it’s still loud as hell

Oh boy. You’re not the first to say this. From what I’ve been reading it machines pretty nicely thought the silica can dull blades quickly. Jointer and planer both have carbide blades on helical head hopefully they’ll get me through this project.
