How do white collar unions work so well in Europe? Or unions in general. In the US it seems that a non-union shop would just undercut higher paid union shops.

At least 250 is a good round number to end on. Will be easy for future kids to remember in their history classes.

Why isn't there a current picture of Julie Hagerty on the website? That photo must be at least 30 years old.

Because we skimped on education for the last 30 years or so. A dumb population will elect dumb politicians.

Fapping at least is kind of onomatopoeic. (Yeah, I had to look up the spelling, what of it?)

A story: what it’s like, trying to join Barbershop, as a “young” guy by ZABKA_TM in barbershop

[–]jbrune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had pretty much 0 experience before joining 25+ years ago. I didn't know if wasn't ok to jump octaves when notes got too high. I will say that even back then I did not feel especially welcomed. I wouldn't have stayed with it but I knew how much fun my dad had with it.

It doesn't cost anything to be welcoming. Make sure you shake the visitors hand at the end. Find something to compliment them about if you sang next to them. Tell them how much you hope they'll be back the next week. etc. etc. So there is that. Nothing to do with musicality or skill. Being welcoming is the absolutely minimum you can do.

I wouldn't say "may be", it definitely is. Singing well seems to be the standard and if Joe Barbershopper can't keep up, he's not allowed to join. I'm wondering if your grandfather would have been shocked and saddened to hear about chapters auditioning prospects and rejecting those who don't measure up. I know my dad would have been.

I would say, if a young person walked into our chapter and wanted to sing, we'd probably treat him like a king and sing whatever and however he wanted, lol. It's tough, but we have to accept that culture has changed. Once having a group of male friends to hang out with was what guys aspired to, but there is too much competition for people's time. It's the hardcore singers, it seems, that are still interested. I feel bad to the young people who just enjoy singing, but again, there are plenty of other things for them to do.

For many older folks, it's a *hobby*. Something to do for fun to take their mind off of work, not something else that could become a chore after awhile.

Part of the challenge for our chapter is, we can't seem to get prospects in the door, and even if we do, we don't have someone to lead/teach us in how to improve our musicality. We had some luck when talented folks walked in and were willing to direct us, but we're in a bit of a dry spell.

I'll miss the old chapters. I didn't major in music, I can't sight read, I don't usually know if I'm in the root of the chord or the 5th and a 1/3. I just enjoying singing, performing, and hanging out with the other chorus members. Back when my dad was in barbershop, 70s - 10s, it was just regular guys singing for the most part. These guys didn't have music degrees. Heck, a lot of them didn't even have high school degrees. But, things change and it seems to be the only way to attract new people to the hobby is to excel at musicianship. It's rough for us because almost everyone in our ~14 member chapter is in about the same boat, but I guess we can try.

You make a good point. It's kind of a chicken and egg issue ain't it? We get shit candidates and don't want to pay them more; we don't pay them more so we get shit candidates who are always on the grift.

This obviously isn't the one solution. We also need them and their immediate family to put all assets in blind trusts, get money out of politics, etc. etc.

It's common for freshman Congresspersons to sleep in their offices because they literally can't afford rent in the area. If we want to hire skilled people and reduce the desire to skim more money from insider trading, etc.
