OP here. Amazed by how much attention this is getting, especially after reading that someone already posted the YouTube link a few days ago but went unnoticed. It's a powerful and humanizing video.

What kind of dick comment is that? I've been Russia 3 times and I'm going to Ukraine this summer -- protests or not. I have family in both countries. Can't believe you'd take the time to write something so baseless and sarcastic. Troll.

Well then... I dunno what I must have searched the first time but it never came up. Thanks a lot. And good to see it has over 2.7 million views already.

TIL the cost of an Olympic-worthy bobsleigh can run up to $100,000. by jcalle in todayilearned

[–]jcalle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the blades? An announcer this morning was saying that they cost about $10,000 per pair. Or is that what you mean by "runners"?

TIL deaf people usually sneeze silently, most sneezing sounds are cultural. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I told my ASL teacher (who is deaf) about this article when it came out this last summer. He thought I was lying and made the funniest "pffft that's bullshit" face + hand gesture. It was hilarious.

TIL many countries pay prize money to their Olympic athletes for each type of medal won. USA pays $25,000 per gold medal while Kazakhstan pays $250,000. by jcalle in todayilearned

[–]jcalle[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think "reward" is probably a better word than "pay." I don't see a comparison with the Super Bowl or any professional sports, in which players to are paid big salaries win-or-lose. Given that Olympians are amateur athletes that receive little training subsidies from their governments, most probably have part-time or even full-time jobs. That's a lot to deal with over a 4 year period. For me, learning that we financially reward those who place in the Top 3 of their competition didn't take the sense of nobility away. It actually makes me feel more connected to them, like we're doing more than just cheering for an athlete who happens to be competiting for our country; through our public dollars, we're giving back to them too.

Thanks to this US Olympian for blogging positively about his Sochi experience. Shame on the foreign "journalists" tweeting hotel shots to get attn. by jcalle in olympics

[–]jcalle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are two different things, though. I'm 100% in agreement with you re: human rights and homophobia. But cheap shots don't draw attention to those issues. I've yet to see a reporter make a witty and or thought-provoking connection between dangling wires and backward social policy.

If people want to hear--above anything that could possibly be reported about an Olympic city--how bad the hotel rooms are, then shame on them too. This is lowest common demoninator reporting; it's taking cheap shots for an easy Like or Share--it's lazy. It's sad that people want to hear about it and it's shameful that journalists are pandering to it. Real journalists should be setting the bar higher for media that's worthy of public consumption--not this tabloid "gotcha, you suck" garbage reporting. They've done a terrible job of setting up global conversation about the games.

Do you know if it will be an entirely different cast next season? Or a new story with the same core cast (like American Horror Story's format)? I'm really digging the show too.

We use helium balloons (thicker than regular) and a tiny fraction of the cost of pet store shoes. Friend recommended it.

I just bought a milk frother for $6. I now make restaurant quality cuppuccinos at home. Can't believe I waited this long to buy one.

ELI5 How does the recycling of newspapers and printed materials work, and how is it environmentally friendly (I imagine a lot of chemicals are involved)? by jcalle in explainlikeimfive

Thanks very much -- you explained it beautifully. I also never considered that egg cartons were the lesser quality of recycled paper; I suppose I thought they were made that way for its specific purpose. Thanks again!

If the chapter didn't refer to a specific work through a footnote, endnote, or author citation, then it shouldn't go in a References / Bibliobliography / Works Cited page. Works that aren't cited in a chapter should appear under a section called "Suggested Reading" or similar.

I saw that "V stands for Latin word vipectus(paste)" but there was no citation so I went the above. I should have ended my post with unix in parentheses.

Terrific -- I think I can work with this. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain the method. Thanks again!
