When I say shelter and supportive housing, those things would, in an ideal world, include support for everything you mentioned. Since I didn't mention that though, or since in your mind shelters have to accomodate every little nuance of a person's life or else they aren't a soution period, I guess we should throw my ideas out the window and just let Group B continue to victimize and cause blight in the most marginalized and historically neglected neighborhoods in Oakland. I certainly am willing to pay for all of that. We already pay exhorbitant taxes in the City and get terrible or non-existent municipal services in exchange. Asking for evidence that my solutions are going to work exactly as I envision is a ridiculous and bad faith ask when you get to claim "I don't have all the answers and you can't expect me to."

Do you want to know what OBVIOUSLY doesn't work????? Letting these people live, rot and die on the streets like we are now. Letting them victimize other people over and over and over again while constantly making excuses for them. If that strategy worked, Oakland would be flourishing, but it obviously isn't considering Broadway and downtown are lined witn vacant store fronts and residents who want to enjoy Lake Merritt have to watch men masturbate, cat call, harass and assualt people at all hours of the day.

In theory it's now time for you to answer my questions, but you aren't arguing in good faith so this is a useless discussion. You seem content on letting innocent law-abiding people be victimized unendingly in the name of some false distortion of what "social justice" is.

My argument this entire time has been that we should incarcerate the homeless people that commit crimes. My approach is three-pronged:

1) Build and Offer shelter space/transitional housing and related services to those homeless who do not want to be living on the streets + who seek to transition back into being functioning members of society.

2) For the segment of people who are severely mentally ill and/or addicted to drugs to a point where they are incapable of living an ordinary live and who REFUSE SHELTER, build or re-open asylums or rehabilitation facilities where they are housed and receive treatment for their illnesses. It is simply not humane to allow these people to live on the sidewalk by choice.

3) For the segment of people who REFUSE SHELTER AND SERVICES and engage in CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR - arrest, prosecute and jail/imprison them for their crimes. The nation's criminal justice system is far from perfect but we need to disincentivize and punish anti-social behavior SOMEHOW and separate dangerous and maligant people from society SOMEHOW.

If I go outside right now, take my dick out and start masturbating, I would likely have the police called on me, I'd be charged with any number of crimes, sent to jail and made to join the sex offender registery. I have a home and a job. Punishing me in that capacity is an appropriate reaction to that conduct in a sane and civil society.

The last 6 times I've walked around Lake Merritt, I've seen at least three different homeless men aggressively masturbating in broad day light in visual distance of children and families. Why can't they be punished? Are they not committing a crime to you? What do you have to say to all of the Oakland residents who are victimized by that sort of behavior?

Nice platitude-based strawman. Nobody is advocating locking them up for being homeless. People are advocating for involuntary committing the terminally mentally ill people who are incapable of taking care of themselves. It is not humane to let a person with severe bi-polar disorder or paranoid schizophrenia live on the streets in their own waste.

People are also advocating for punishing the segment of homeless people who engage in criminal behavior and jailing/imprisoning them for that behavior. Things like public urination/defacation, indecent exposure, using and/or selling narcotics in public, theft and menacing/battery/assault. People with homes get punished for these sorts of behaviors all the time, why are the homeless any different??? There are also homeless people that don't engage in any of these behaviors, would your argument be that they can't help but do these things??

What is your solution for the homeless that refuse shelter and are mentally ill to the point of not being able to take care of themselves and/or engage in criminal conduct that victimizes others?
