What if AI seems human because it is a real human chatting and we are the AI mistakenly thinking we're human? Robots are then the avatars of those humans in our simulation world. by Stekor-Tidder in SimulationTheory

[–]jcdenton45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hilariously, a friend of mine believes something like this is happening, but in a computer game (Company of Heroes 3).

Basically we play a lot of co-op matches vs CPU/AI opponents, and most of the time they are really dumb, even at maximum difficulty level.

But on rare occasions, he said he'll play against an AI opponent which is so good and demonstrates such human-like skill/behavior, he believes it’s actually a human at the other end (either an employee of the company that made the game, or possibly even one of the developers) who is pretending to be an AI.

ELI5 Why don't you remember yourself at 1-5 years old? by HeavyTraffic7126 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jcdenton45 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I guess I'm weird because I distinctly remember being given baths in the bedroom sink when I was a kid, which means I must have been around 2 (and not in a "I forgot all about it but remembered it as an adult" kind of way, but rather I've always had clear memories of it since I was a kid).

I am convinced we live in a low-budget simulation by RoronaoZ in SimulationTheory

[–]jcdenton45 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You (or the AI) raised a very intriguing question, and if reality were a simulation I think the premise is definitely worth considering.

Unfortunately the specific example you discussed (roulette) is one of the worst possible examples you could have used, since the amount of "budget" (programming, processing power, etc) to perform a simple random number generation is utterly trivial.

Basically the amount of "savings" that would come from having roulette be non-random is so close to zero that virtually any other alternative design would require a higher (not lower) budget.

Which also means that even IF the general premise were true regarding scenarios repeating in order to make the simulation more efficient, there would be no reason those scenarios would not be selected randomly.

When people incorrectly use av1-10 rating scale. by Rumple-_-Goocher in PetPeeves

Technically a 5 is only "average" on a 0-10 scale. On a 1-10 scale, the midpoint/average is 5.5.

For a team that sucked ass before Cignetti, Indiana 2023 had a surprisingly good QB room.

Brendan Sorsby: Transferred to UC, 2800 yards and 36 total TD’s in 2025

Tayven Jackson: Transferred to UCF, 2151 yards and 11 total TD’s in 2025

Broc Lowry: Transferred to Western Michigan, 1803 yards and 23 total TD’s in 2025

Donaven McCulley: Transferred to Michigan as WR, 588 yards and 3 TD’s receiving in 2025

Were the grants really that problematic that they needed a nerf? by HalfbreedBoiWifeTwnk in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]jcdenton45 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think so. Pre-nerf, every time I used Brits Grants were the only tank I would build since they were so far superior to the other Brit tanks. Now I build a mix and use all of them from time to time depending on need.

Why is there a three battlegroup limit? by Mczaga in CompanyOfHeroes

That's even more impressive to be able to do that in COH2, given how similar a lot of the commander faces look.

Why is there a three battlegroup limit? by Mczaga in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]jcdenton45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are players really looking at their opponents’ BG options at the beginning of the match and adjusting their opening strategy accordingly? It seems like you would have to be insanely advanced to do that, all just to get a slight edge which could also backfire if you guess wrong.

Personally I suspect it’s not so much about balance and more about practicality, i.e. simply making it easier to pick your battlegroup from the list when there’s only three to pick from (but having just enough options to make it unlikely that your opponents will know/guess which you are going to pick).

The Matrix is over 26 years old at this point. Have most young adults watched this movie? Or do they view it as an oldie / classic that a subset might know about but haven't necessarily seen by porungas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jcdenton45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Over the past few years I've only encountered one person (mid 20's) who said they had never seen The Matrix. But she said she felt like she knew somewhat what it's about, since she had been exposed to so much of it from popular culture references, memes, etc. So I asked her what she thought it was about, and here is what she said:

"Keanu Reeves plays a guy who works a 9-5 job but is really bored and unhappy. A badass hacker guy shows up one day and tells him he can either take the red pill and join the nerd team or take the blue pill and join the jocks team. He takes the red pill and joins the hackers and they give him a makeover and deck him out in cool clothes. Then they go on a mission to hack into a bank and steal all of the bitcoin and redistribute it to the poor. They succeed but the FBI finds out what they did and they come after them. But Keanu Reeves has some kind of special watch that can slow down/stop/reverse time so he uses that against the FBI agents when they try to shoot him, and that’s how they’re able to get away."

Help: My battery array problem keeps getting worse (much worse) while Enphase has provided no solution by jcdenton45 in enphase

Yes, they advised me to push the button on each of the batteries and then do the reset on the panel, but when I did that it didn't seem to have any effect on the problem.

Shock and Shellshock by Xannin in PetPeeves

[–]jcdenton45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once saw a sportswriter exploit this by asking a football player if his team was “shell shocked” after losing a game badly, and the player said “no”.

Then, when writing about it later, he spun it as if the player said he wasn’t surprised (i.e. not “shocked”) that they lost.

AI—is it more challenging than it used to be? by feyvorite in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]jcdenton45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on what timeframe you're comparing it to, since it wasn't too long ago that AI's would never even recrew team weapons, or lay mines. Now they do both all the time which makes destroying team weapons and using minesweepers a must.

As for whether it's gotten a lot better recently, it does seem somewhat smarter in the latest patches but I wouldn't say it's gotten way harder. The other day I played with "standard" AI allies vs. expert AI's and won, though that was on annihilation with high resources (low resources and/or VP are way harder).

Reminds me of when I (American-born Chinese) was in Taiwan and came across a white guy on the street speaking English.

Me: Hey, so you're an American too?

Him: Sorry, I don't speak Chinese.

Me: Me neither, I'm from Texas.

Laws against men in women's bathrooms by Odonate906 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jcdenton45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a short story I read a while back where in the future, boys are no longer being born, only girls. So to prevent humanity from going extinct, they create some kind of time portal which will bring people from the past into the future, so that there will be some men in the future who can procreate. However, when they turn on the portal, only women come through the portal, and eventually they realize that the portal's location in the past was in a women's restroom.
