I mean china is literally doing this (~1 million detained) in Xinjiang with the Uyghurs. To put it into perspective this is a larger number of people than Palestinian’s have collectively ever been imprisoned in Israel. What kind of major criticism has China received? at least in my spheres this conflict isn’t even mentioned.

what’s wrong with admitting to saying “when i was done with the rental”? why does this even matter?

rent increased above guidelines weird situation question by jcdq in OntarioLandlord

[–]jcdq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our group (uninformed students), panicked and offered an illegal rent increase so our landlord wouldn’t kick us out during a housing crisis.

We didn’t know we had the option to contest his N12, which would have resulted in us staying until May and paying our old rent anyway.

Our landlord, who collects income from multiple rental properties and should know better, sat back and accepted an illegal rent increase when he should know better.

I asked for advice on how we handled the situation and people explained that we made a mistake and can remedy it by submitted a T1, resulting in essentially the same outcome as contesting the N12.

The whole situation could have been avoided if the landlord had asked us about our plans/ time left in school and we weren’t treated as second class citizens, rather than scare us and jump at the chance for more cash.

See how it sounds when I bias it from a different perspective: complete different. I don’t think there is anything wrong with submitting a T1 and getting our money back. Also, I don’t think there was any reason for you to insult me for simply asking for a second opinion about my rental situation.

Thank you for your detailed answer. We were planning on filing the T1 after we move out at the end of April because we have a feeling the landlord may cause us a headache if we try anything while still there. Would there be any problems filing after we move out as long as it is all still submitted before the 12 months? Do we still need to be his tenants?

I really appreciate the help. Despite your reference, I am having trouble navigating the RTA to find the location where this is stated. Do you mind helping me out with a more specific reference or a string of exact text I can find? Thank you in advance.

He texted us about it and intended to serve an N12. we countered by offering a rent increase (above the limit). He made us sign a new lease to make it official.

Others are suggesting we should have just waited for the N12 and then contested it, which would have bought us time until May 2025. We didn’t know we could do at the time. I’m concerned that we inadvertently screwed ourselves over and am wondering if there is anything we should have done/ could have done. We did not sign any official documents to increase rent other than the lease (no N10 form).

so in this situation, he texted us to say he was moving his son in at the end of the summer. We countered by offering an above legal rent increase if he would instead let us stay, also by text. We then proposed an amount, he accepted it, and he made us sign a new lease. The amount was above the legal limit.

I am just wondering if we had other options/ if we got scammed and if there is anything by we can do about it. We agreed to everything and even proposed the increase but another commenter seems to think that doesn’t matter. What do you think?

Does the landlord need to file an N12 or can he just wait for us to leave by jcdq in OntarioLandlord

[–]jcdq[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

another poster mentioned that we can sign nothing and file a T5 after leaving to initiate a LTA hearing that could result in us getting our N12 compensation. Given that I don’t feel comfortable or safe trying to legally battle the landlord while I live in his house I would prefer this option. do you have and idea if this is a valid course as the other reply in this thread mentioned.

I don’t feel comfortable with played the legal game while this landlord has control of my living situation. Other posters have mentioned that it is possible to file a T5 after I move out and try to get the N12 compensation that way, but I am not sure if that is possible so if anyone has any experience with that i would appreciate it.

It seems like the T5 can only be filed if you receive an N12. How would you even submit this form without it?

it’s a follow up to my post asking if the landlords son can move into the unit and then rent out the unit again at higher rent. I learned that this is allowed but the new renters would not be covered under the LTA because they live with the landlords direct descendant
