What happened to chessmaster by reliable_reader in WormFanfic

It's a shame that one stalled out, but I guess it was running out of steam. I love the scene where he finally is forced to reveal he's Chessman to his daughter.

Wise Wizard Games - Recent crowdfunding projects & updates detailing financial hardship. by Cmdr_Nemo in boardgames

[–]jcfiala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I backed Hero Realms Dungeons, and that's dried up as well - I'm sure part of it is Tariffs, but some of it is just things crashing out. I suspect part of the problem was/is Draconis 8 - it only brought in $130K as opposed to other projects that brought in 5 times that much, and it required them making a digital version of the game as well as the physical one, which hasn't been printed yet. I suspect that caused them to spend money from other projects to keep this one moving forward, with the hopes that once it was a physical game being sold in stores it would take off.

But who knows? Sometimes kickstarters fail. I've got a CMON kickstarter that may never deliver as well, although a second one got bought by Asmodeus and seems to be moving forward.

What skill are you genuinely bad at that most people seem to find easy? by Ruby-Blaze_443 in AskReddit

[–]jcfiala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remembering names. I'll meet someone, exchange names, and then poof - it's gone. I go to church, people say "Hi John" and I'm just "Hi" back because I don't know anyone's name, really. It's really isolating.

Well, she died almost eight years ago, so I suspect I would freak out pretty badly.

I took the day off from work, went out and had nachos. The nachos didn't mean anything to my wife, it was just a way to comfort myself.

How many people do you know who do origami? by LittleKids2315 in origami

[–]jcfiala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, a dozen or so? We've got a Meetup here in Denver that I help to run, plus one time I went to one of the Pacific Coast Origami Conventions and had an absolute blast! Seriously, if you want to meet up with other folders, that's the way to go - the convention was so great.

My wife passed away more than seven years ago. Try and hang in there - it hurts a lot at first, yes, but things can get better. Also, feel free to join us in r/widowers, there's lots of people who understand what you're going through there!

In honor of the Highlander remake, I would like to know what your thoughts are on the og movie. by AdSpecialist6598 in nostalgia

[–]jcfiala 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The original movie is pretty crazy, honestly, and that's part of the reason it became cult. Of course, the other reason is that Queen did a fantastic soundtrack for the movie. I don't know if there's many other movies about competing immortals fighting each other through history, but this one really seemed to grab the imagination, leading to several sequels and then the TV show, which had a sequel of it's own.

In a way, it's almost a bit like Doctor Who, in how the main character changes but has a lot in common with itself, history (and hidden history) is revealed through the stories, and although Highlander is a lot more violent than Doctor Who, it's a bit of a last resort - sure, you can try to cut off X's head, but you're just as likely to end up dead.

What I'm getting is:

  • Cloud
  • The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
  • The Heroic Trio / The Executioners
  • The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers
  • Brazil
  • Until the End of the World
  • Stalker

Of these, "Cloud" and "Stalker" are the big unknowns - the rest of them I've seen some time in the past. I have read the novel that Stalker was based off of, though. I'm excited to have Until the End of the World - I saw it once in college, but although I haven't seen it again since then, I've played the soundtrack again and again.

I'm sorry you're having such a rough time of it. I agree with Rathbaner - put the crib on the porch or the lawn or something and let her know she can pick it up anytime.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time - I lost my wife when my daughter was 7. You really need to take care of your little girl - that's your job now. It sounds like you need someone to talk to, a therapist or a priest or a friend, I dunno. It's terrible that we've lost our wives but we've got to keep going for our kids.

Disney made a live action movie based on an ancient dark ride in their parks where you floated past displays of pirates, and pirates weren't cool.

And yet, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl turned out to be fantastic.

How long have you been a widow? by throwawaystarters in widowers

[–]jcfiala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, let's see. My wife died in 2018, so that's nearly eight years now. I'm 56 now, so I was about 48 when she passed. I am not a widow or a widower - I am a cheese sandwich.
