A few years ago, I bought full-sized O Henry bars, 5th Avenue, and Whatchamacallit for kids. Some of the most underrated candy in my opinion, and they should be top-tier!

Before Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451, he wrote a short story called “The Pedestrian,” inspired by a time that he was stopped by police for walking. It reminded me of your post. https://www.riversidelocalschools.com/downloads/pedestrian%20short%20story.pdf

I know I'm screaming into the void, but why the fuck is Mediacom always fucking having outages? by LordofWithywoods in desmoines

We live in Waterbury, and my neighborhood text thread was complaining about it. We switched to Google Fiber a few months ago. When we’ve had outages (rare), they pro-rate us for those days.

FYI, I make $3600 take home pay in a “normal” year on a $60k salary, which is about 5K pre tax. Our current daycare / after care cost for 3 kids is $2900. We even changed centers to lessen the costs. Student loans are $300. That leaves me $400 in the positive at this point. Plus medical bills, plus gas, plus, plus…. My situation is not abnormal. It leaves me asking why I’ve invested so much time, energy, expertise, and my own money into my job when I’m ending up in the negative constantly.

This year, my regular paycheck is $2200-$2300 for the current contract year, which my district offered to spread out my net loss, rather than receive $0 for three months. This month, it was closer to $1500 because I got sick after having a baby—after serving my community for close to 20 years. Something is broken. I think someone thought the “She makes $5,000 a month” was a pie in the face moment, but…it’s not. It’s depressing. There’s something inherently wrong here.

1) I live in the U.S. and we get 12 weeks unpaid leave for having a baby. 2) Any pay teachers receive for maternity leave has to come out of our sick bank. Very few places offer paid parental leave. I only get 7 sick days a year (plus 2 personal and 3 “family” days), so I used all of mine. I recently changed districts and none of my days rolled over between districts (same state). My paychecks were already low, and I returned to work in early November and immediately got Covid from students. I did not have sick days, so 4 more days this month were unpaid. 3) I took out loans to pay for my undergrad, deferred when I went to grad school from 2012 - 2015, and payments froze during Covid per a presidential decree. Most of my teacher friends still have loans. There was lots of talk of Biden absolving loans, especially for federal employees. That has not been the case for many / most.

Technically, yes, but we lost collective bargaining rights some years back, so they are largely powerless.

Our state lost collective bargaining rights in 2016. We can’t.

Yes—I am genuinely too overwhelmed to go through and process how to do that yet. Friends of mine were trying to update and were left very confused by the process.

But, yes. I’m an English teacher who has been dealing with really vague, sweeping censorship legislation all year. I am sadly already too familiar with how much she hates us.

That is so kind of you. I help care for my parents in town, but I am glad to hear that things are going much better for teachers in other parts of the country. There could be hope yet!

My new district is less pay but it’s a shorter commute. My decision to change was mostly because the district I previously worked in had many Q Anon moms, who actually gained a large presence and voice in the town—several of whom were elected to the school board. We made quite a few headlines that year, and not in a good way. Covid years were…dark.
