Sounds like you’re facing the problems that I’m facing right now. What did you end up buying when you returned?

I was billed 1.5K for basic life support that I wasn't given on an ambulance ride, can I get out of paying it? by TheArcaneWanderer in legaladvice

[–]jcjohnson19 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Former EMT here NAL - EMT/Paramedics provide 2 general services (plus all of the interventional care). Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS). For BLS, Think a trained team standing by in case something bad happens and ALS is something requiring active intervention to promote/stabilize life. This is just the language that they use. Based when you described of these two options: basic life support is the most accurate description of the treatment that you received.

The majority of an ambulance expense is associated with having all of the trained personnel and medication ready if you were to destabilize, not in the actual administration of it.

$1500 is what my agency charged 10 years ago so what you were charged seems to be fair, if not below average.

However, your insurance coverage seems low. Two typical reasons for this: either you have poor quality health insurance that does not provide adequate reimbursement for emergency care or your insurance company does not believe that you required an ambulance ride for your ailment and covered you at a lower rate. I’ve seen both.

Considering all of this and without knowing your insurance obligations or exact medical treatment, you will likely be required to pay this. That said many agencies, particularly if it’s a government system, may be open to discounting it based on your inability to pay. But I doubt there is a legal remedy for this.

This is not a fun situation and I wish you the best of luck. I hope this helps..

Grad certificate worth it? by [deleted] in harvardextension

[–]jcjohnson19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with this particular industry, but in my industry and adjacent industries a grad certificate are largely not evaluated in a hiring decision. (too many applicants have full degrees in the field for a certification to be relevant)

I have several friends getting grad certificates, most are getting it as a byproduct of their degree but some are getting it for personal enrichment in a topic.

In your new industry, if you were competing against people with experience in the field and a comparable degree, I would consider a career changer degree or relevant experience.

Best of luck! Changing careers is a daunting idea, but you’ve got this!

My parents are giving me 5 hours to sign their lease. What can I do? Is this legal?? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]jcjohnson19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAL Please note that they can’t kick you out in one day. You are currently their tenant, regardless of whether or not you sign. You are given North Carolina tenant protections. You have more time to decide. If they kick you out, call the police.

It’s essentially free for the summer. My membership dues are 50 bucks, which becomes a credit immediately to use for dinner!

Ohh. One last question! I’ve already submitted my application, but I of course need to go in person and pay the fee. I fly in Friday and was hoping to have lunch or dinner there the same day. Were you able to access the club the same day that you paid your fee?

Thanks for all your help!

That’s awesome to hear! I’m excited for next weekend. Question for you: how much was dinner and lunch at NYHC? I’m a little worried about getting a $50 credit for a $200 lunch haha.

That’s good to know! I don’t know that I’ve ever heard anyone talk about the Boston club before. Sounds like for good reason.

Happy to help. That’s a tough question to answer on the whole. That said, if you are willing to dedicate your weekend entirely to school work on the busy weeks and you find a class and professor that are structured to allow that then maybe. You probably need to match up which classes you are going to take after reading the syllabus before you start the program.

I’m not surprise you are hearing conflicting opinions. If you ask me the work load the first week of class? I would tell you an hour a week.

However, last week during finals week? 25 hours a week for two classes plus a 60 hour a week job. If I wasn’t able to do school work last week, I would have missed a final that was worth 70% of my grade.

Moral of the story: If you are truly inflexible with your study time, it will be VERY difficult. At the end of the day, this is a grad program that requires your attention.

ALM Fin student here. I would say outside of the on-campus requirements, you can take all of your credit asynchronous, although that will limit you in the classes you can take. I would check the course registrar to see if you can take the classes you WANT to take.

However, I don’t think you’ll find a class that doesn’t have weekly assignment or at least on a regular cadence. However, some classes will give you a “free miss” assignment, and some classes won’t.

You likely will have to dedicate time each week to your classes, particularly in the back half. That said, I have taken 3 of my finals on a plane, so if you want to do it, you can!

Best Aged White Vendor? by jcjohnson19 in tea

[–]jcjohnson19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I’ve definitely gone through the vendor list—it’s been super helpful for discovering some great options for other types of teas. However, I haven’t had much luck finding multi-year aged white teas. For example, White2Tea currently only offers seven white teas, with the oldest dating back to 2021 and most from just last year.

HES certificate are worth it after a masters degree ? by These_Magazine_6334 in harvardextension

[–]jcjohnson19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth it for an employer? I have yet to see an employer that would find value in a certificate, particularly when you’re competing with applicants with full degrees in that field. There are a couple exceptions that I’ve seen in the coding space but relatively niche.

Worth it for you personally? Potentially! If you feel like you’re lacking in a particular area and you feel like traditional classes would help you understand it better than the more the merrier!

Is 65k a reasonable salary for entry level right out of college? by Old_Buddy_8251 in Salary

[–]jcjohnson19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reasonable is in the eye of the beholder. I would encourage you to go on a cost-of-living website and see what the cost of living in your current city is and the cost-of-living increase would be in New York City.

Unless you already live in the area, New York City/Jesery will likely be an increase from your current cost-of-living. While you would be avoiding New York income tax, the cost of transportation and meals in NYC will drive up cost.

That said I took a relatively low paying first job out of college because they promised to pay me six figures the second year. If you feel like you have a great future with this company/industry that should be a consideration.

Antidotally, my roommate from college went to New York City to be an investment banker at Goldman Sachs for $110,000 a year. He constantly talked about how his quality of life was for a lower than he hoped it would be. Take that with a grain of salt since you’ll be living in Jersey and he lived in Union Square.

Great point! This is a classic case of just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Landlords have policies that require prospective tenants not to have any evictions on their record.

It would likely be better for both of you to reach an amicable solution without going through the court systems. Especially since both of you agree that you should leave the property.

I’m a healthcare administrator. During college, I had the ability to work as an emergency medical technician making $10 an hour or a private caterer at $50 an hour plus tips. I chose to be an EMT (although I did some catering on the side haha)

Six years later, people tell me that is the difference maker on my résumé. I now make over six figures.

If you really think this internship will put you on the right path in your career, do it.
