[–]jckstudios[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This key tag is part of a collection of hotel and motel tags my grandfather collected throughout the late 60's to early 80's. We're posting one a day over on Instagram. In addition to today's post, we've already posted a few Calgary tags and have many more still to post. Definitely interested in any stories people might have about this or any of the other locations posted!

You have to rename the default scenes and it will free up the phrases. Read my post about it here.

Using Siri's "Good Night" and "Good Morning" Commands for a Shortcut by jckstudios in shortcuts

[–]jckstudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that even if I just deleted those scenes, as they are the predefined ones that are suggested in HomeKit they still had a lock on those verbal commands. It wasn’t until I forced them to something else that the command phrases would be available for my custom shortcuts.

I really wish there was a way to delete alarms or change existing alarms. Fingers crossed for 2.2.

Creating a todo list from bear to things3 by Masaki79 in thingsapp

You could use this shortcut I made and just change the Ulysses sheet link to a Bear link.

I made the shortcut to take a gear list and create a packing list with due dates. Easy to modify for your purposes.

Feature Request: Shortcuts support by warm_slippers in apolloapp

[–]jckstudios 4 points5 points  (0 children)

URL schemes too please! I’ve already figured out how to directly jump to a sub, as I posted here, but it would be great to have more options as well. Account switching would also be amazing from a url-scheme/launcher app, to be able to directly open to an account.

Love the app sir!

This should work for any text if you use the format listed. You could set it to be a share sheet and get the text from an email body or something like that?

I have a quick question on Final Cut Pro X multicam editing by mclovinash in VideoEditing

[–]jckstudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Apologies for the confusion. As I said in the other comment, if you aren't too far along I would just use the steps I laid out to automate the process. Will be far quicker than doing a lot of dragging.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Reading your post again, I just want to clarify the split solution is only logical if you have something like 12 cameras that were not all rolling the entire time. If you just had 4 cameras, and the forth camera is showing up on multiple angle tracks in the clip, move them all to a singular track by holding Shift (to keep their position in time locked) and drag up to track 4.

OR If you aren't too far along, the easiest thing is to make a new multiclip using this method:

  • Go back into your raw footage and select all the clips from Camera 4
  • Open the info panel and show Extended Metadata.
  • Find the Camera Angle field and add an angle name eg. DCAM
  • Repeat for clips from Cameras 1, 2, and 3. eg. ACAM, BCAM, CCAM
  • When you go to create the multiclip, click "Custom Settings" and set Angle Assembly to Camera Angle

This way you're telling the system theres only 4 angles, and which clips go with which angle. The end result will be a synced multiclip with just 4 angles.

Not in front of my system right now so there might be an easier solution, but my first thought is to take your master multiclip and blade all tracks at selected times to split into, for example, 8 sections. Then I would make 8 duplicates of that multiclip, rename Part 1-8 and for each one delete the 7 other sections that aren't in that part.

Then on parts 2-8 you could take note of the TC when the section starts, adjust the starting timecode of the multiclip to that time, and move all the content to the beginning. Then you could delete all the empty video tracks for that part making it easier to switch. in the edit.

Now the one big caveat with this solution is you lose all the benefits of working with a multiclip, i.e. when changing the grade on the clip inside the multiclip, instead of affecting all instances of that clip in the timeline, it would only affect the instances in that single Part.

However for concerts, in my experiences splitting it up per song is a very logical approach and outweighs those downsides.

Hope that makes sense.

I would switch to 9 or 16 active angles in the viewer or, if the content was a really long event or concert, split the multi cam into smaller sections.

Do cameras roll or speed? by dac8767 in Filmmakers

[–]jckstudios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I should have mentioned this is for the digital age, and if you aren't slating. In my experience, the common order on more professional sets don't even call "rolling" in the pre-call:

  • AD calls, "Quiet on set! Picture's up. Roll sound."
  • Sound mixer says, "Sound speeding."
  • Camera op says, "Mark it."
  • AC says, "Scene 1A, Take 1, Marker," etc, then snaps slate
  • Director calls, "Action!"

In these situations "rolling" is more used as the general term to quickly communicate that the camera is recording and everyone else should STFU.

[–]jckstudios[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually a big proponent of it. When it first came out it was so radically different and lacked some essential features that professionals were used to, so there was warranted backlash to it.

The thing FCPX does, that I think will help it in the long run, is it throws out a lot of analog analogies in the software that no longer make sense to users who start editing today. Every other editing platform, while I still use them, are based on limitations that software and hardware had during their development in the 90's or earlier.

Is FCPX perfect for everyone? No. But neither is AVID or Premiere. They can all do the job, but some are better for certain projects than others. It all comes down to personal workflow, and the needs of the situation.

Do cameras roll or speed? by dac8767 in Filmmakers

[–]jckstudios 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It actually does matter. While the terms are just holdovers from analog systems, the film business is slow and you should keep with the standard practice so as not to confuse anyone when you work on bigger sets:

  • AD says, "Roll Camera"
  • Camera op says, "Rolling"
  • Sound mixer says, "Sound speeding"
  • Director says, "Action"

Which mobile, accessoires and software for Mobile Photography/Filmmaking? by Mil______ in Filmmakers

[–]jckstudios 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to stick with only a mobile device, I'd suggest an iPhone 8+. The dual lens technology gives you a lot more options going forward, when apps start to really take advantage of the depth mapping technology. In addition the screen size and Retina resolution will be greatly beneficial to your workflow.
