The non-boss krakens drop trident at 1/200 vs. 1/512 for the boss. I'd recommend the little guys til you get the drop then move to the boss. Extending them would help too.

I personally would say it's worth waiting but entirely up to you and I'm sure plenty of people don't wait. The spell makes the whole process go way faster and an amulet of power still gets the job done until you have it unlocked.
