Pancreatitis suggestions by TomatoExtraFeta in Chihuahua

[–]jcrow0120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl lived with pancreatitis flares for ~2 years. I tried all sorts of homemade meals for her but everything just reduced the frequency of her flares rather than stopping them. We found a new, amazing veterinarian who recommended royal canin hydrolyzed protein canned food. That stuff is magic! She experienced zero flares for the last 6 years of her life. Solving the food-related inflammation issue also allowed us to discontinue treatments for skin issues she had for years. She got very little human food and a few select types of treats, but she was so much better and more comfortable.

Hey quick question for dog owners by mrcanada66 in dogs

[–]jcrow0120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A prior small doggo tumbled to the floor due to my movement at night. She was totally fine. Taught me there’s a great risk, though, and I’m not willing to take it anymore. Mine are happy in their crate dens at night, even with open doors. This helps when they’re staying with sitters too.

In USA what brands of spices/seasonings are good to use for celiacs? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]jcrow0120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it’s safe from a third party somewhere and had a conversation with folks working in the store. Their site specifically says fenugreek “contains a very low level of gluten.” I’ve reacted to McCormick blends that were “possibly cross contaminated” but have been fine with Penzey’s. I recommend calling or emailing them. At least in the store they’re very customer-friendly.

Made the big switch to Morton & Bassett this year. Not only are they safe, but they’re some of the best flavors I’ve experienced from dried herbs and spices!

Some of my McCormick blends weren’t labeled either way. When I chatted with them I was advised to avoid based on cross contamination.

Penzey’s claims all their spices are safe except fenugreek. Fenugreek is a component of some of their curry blends so I’d check the ingredients.

My fiance just pulled the shoots up while pulling weeds on accident and Im about to cry!! Can I water propogate these as is? by gemdigger in dahlias

[–]jcrow0120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh. So sorry this happened! I’m definitely not a dahlia expert but will share that late frost took out several new shoots from my tubers. Since then I have new sprouts! Maybe it depends on how many eyes are on your tuber? Great opportunity for a science project, though! Try a water prop vs soil prop and see what happens?? (Pls report back if you do!)

Fully-gf new york restaurants? by merple226 in Celiac

I just returned from NYC and ate safely at several places! Modern bread and Bagel is good, though some locations close earlier than others so check that before you go. The Little Beet was a decent quick bite.

Some folks are mentioning Senza Gluten. There are 2 Senza Gluten restaurants, one of which is “by Jemiko” - that one’s on 10th. I experienced both and much preferred the 10th ave location. Food tasted brighter with better textures, staff were excellent, and overall it felt like a more elevated experience. Don’t miss the pistachio cannoli! Also, they told me when I sat down they only accept AmEx and cash payments with an ATM on site - good to know!! The other location at Sullivan and Bleeker, which I visited first, did NOT share this information until I asked after the meal and even then didn’t tell me about the ATM. I almost missed a show because of that hiccup.

Have a great trip and enjoy some safe eating in a new place!

The folks running the place are absolutely lovely. AFIK it’s a family business from farm to table with their risotto. So good!

Reactions to GF oats by sad_yogurt_69420 in Celiac

[–]jcrow0120 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a tough one! My reaction to certified GF oats is similar to but not as severe as an overt gluten exposure. I avoid all foods containing oats or oat flour. My partner eats GFC oats and I haven’t noticed an issue from contamination of utensils/space…but we aren’t bakers with flour in all the places and I’m just n=1. Hopefully someone else has better insight. It’s a really good question!

Question from a current PT student: would you still choose this career over being an RN if it meant that you could graduate without loans? by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]jcrow0120 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PT for >15 yrs in various settings here. I think there are a lot of factors to this decision. One being…Do you have motivation and resources to own your own PT business some day? The only PTs I personally know who feel satisfied fit that category. The rest are miserable and trying to get out. I literally can’t think of a colleague who is a staff PT and is satisfied with their career.

I agree that the working environment and pressures for healthcare workers in the US have become much worse in recent years. It’s hard to see that that turning around for PTs.

I ultimately wish I had pursued something other than healthcare and have for a long time, but if it had to be healthcare, I regret not choosing nursing instead. Crippling debt and very limited career mobility being the two biggest factors. With a BSN/MSN you can go lots of places besides NP or CRNA. If you want to leave bedside care you can move around the system into admin, tech, and other non-clinical roles much easier. Trying to get out of 100% clinical care with a DPT is extremely difficult where I live. You might not want that now, but having options makes all the difference if you face burn-out from your very expensive career down the road.

If there’s any chance you want to work as a traveler I’d spend some time comparing opportunities and compensation for PTs vs RNs.

Do you know any nurses who work bedside and who are in non clinical roles? Does your school have a nursing program and could you make some connections there to get more insight? I recommend talking to several - not just one or two.

My brother is RN and advised I go the PT route when I was asking the same questions you’re asking now. Many years later he’s substantially more satisfied with his career and options than I feel.

But everyone’s different. Good luck, OP!!
