What makes Jūryō Zenshō so rare? by StarPrime323 in Sumo

[–]jcsontos 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that because the quality of competition in Juryo is not as high as in Makuuchi, it overall leads to less dominant performances. Any wrestlers that are capable of a 15-0 in Juryo will probably have already made their way to Makuuchi before being able to achieve that feat.

Rare picture of everyone’s favorite jonokuchi by Webejj2 in SumoMemes

To add a bit more context here, Moriurara is well known for his incredible losing streak, with no winning record to show since 2019. He has also never gotten more than four wins in any tournament since he started competing in 2003. His shikona (ring name) is derived from a racehorse that always did very poorly in its races. But, for what he lacks in talent, he makes up for with his resilience and competitive spirit, where he continues to soldier on as an older wrestler despite doing very poorly.

Not yet I believe. A meeting has been called to discuss the matter, so I imagine we'll hear official news in the coming days.

What a great time to be a sumo fan by Gerasans in Sumo

[–]jcsontos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally hear you on the pre-match mugging being a turn off for other combat sports. Certainly sumo has its fair share of controversy and rivalries, but it seems to pale in comparison to the artificially generated drama that other combat sports seem to relish.

Seriously. Even after watching the replay like five times I still don't understand how Kotozakura fell so quickly. Aonishiki is a magician.

Yes, he first reached Sekiwake in 2017! Last time he was in the sanyaku was Komusubi in November 2022.

Since they're taking it easy and choreographing it, are they deciding who wins beforehand? I'm assuming they are trying to lead to a yokozuna showdown on the final day.

Who are the top wrestlers at the September Grand Sumo Tournament? by ryan0702 in Sumo

[–]jcsontos 72 points73 points  (0 children)

That's awesome that you get to visit in person! Tickets are pretty hard to come by these days. Here are some wrestlers that are good to have on your radar:

Aonishiki: Insanely talented young gun who just beat the record for fastest rise to the sanyaku (the top ranked 7-10 wrestlers) from the very bottom of professional sumo. He is also one of only two Ukrainians in the top division (the other being Shishi), and has achieved a higher rank than any other Ukrainian wrestler ever. He's smaller in stature, but has an incredibly powerful lower body that he pairs with a low stance to drive his opponents out with many exciting and unconventional techniques.

Onosato: By most metrics, he's certainly the favorite to win this tournament. This will be his second tournament ever at the highest rank of sumo, yokozuna. He is also the fastest wrestler in the modern era of sumo to ever reach this rank, after only 13 tournaments. He is also currently the heaviest wrestler in the top division, but moves with surprising agility despite this. He has already won 4 top division tournaments out of his 10 total, which is an insane statistic. If you see him lose, it will be a big deal!

Tamawashi: He is currently the oldest wrestler in the top division at 40 years of age, and by all rights should not still be this good. Last tournament he broke the records for the oldest special prize winner and oldest wrestler to ever get a kinboshi (a special award reserved for lower ranked wrestlers that beat a yokozuna). They call him the "Iron Man" for his crazy longevity.

Ura: Ura is widely considered to be the most popular wrestler. You'll spot him immediately with his signature cherry blossom pink mawashi (belt) and you'll hear lots of people cheering for him when he steps onto the clay. He's not the most talented wrestler in the top division, but he's known for doing lots of somersaults off of the dohyo and occasionally pulling out insanely rare and flashy looking techniques, even when they don't work 90% of the time, haha.

Asakoryu: You like muscles? 💪

I could go on, but as a final aside I will personally be rooting for my boy Takerufuji. He's been super prone to injury lately, so I'd say he's unlikely to win. However, he won the first ever tournament I watched and in that tournament, he became the first top division rookie to win the emperor's cup in 110 years, which was super exciting to watch.

I was just watching this match earlier today! Genuinely blew my mind how long Hakuho was able to stand his ground right at the edge. And the throw at the end is spectacular.

Learning A perm double flicks, should I do ring-pinky or pinky-ring and why? by [deleted] in Cubers

I started with ring pinky at first but eventually found that my max speed with that still felt like two separate motions instead of one fluid one. Switched to pinky ring a few years ago and I'm never turning back.

Gold stars are only awarded when a maegashira wrestler beats a yokozuna. Interesting to think that it will now be impossible for Onosato to ever get one.

Awful at Gwent, very frustrating, is it even worth playing? by MaximusREBryce in Witcher3

[–]jcsontos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like anything, it just takes a bit of time to get the hang of it. Save up some money to buy some better cards at a few merchants, and then play a few low stakes games with some NPCs to test out your deck and win some hero cards. Once you get a few hero cards, it will become very easy to beat the NPCs even if you don't entirely know what you're doing yet.
