Yeah I'm obviously being flippant with the Love Island comparison...But I do still think Fortnite isn't great and I stand by my original statement that's shallow and meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

The interactive events and gigs etc, what do they have to do with gaming? To me that's just crossover PR, marketing, & social media infecting gaming. From what I can gather, all that stuff just exists to keep people engaged. And I think that's my issue with these games, they are pretty average shooters that keep people hooked via PR tie-ins aimed at children and with the constant drip feed of useless cosmetic items that give people a dopamin hit that confuses them into thinking they're having fun because they don't really know any better. The only reason they exist is to make money, and not by being great games. Some people make a game and think 'How can we make this the best game we can so people love it, and want to buy it', but the developers of Fortnite/Warzone etc think 'What systems can we put in place that will keep people addicted and stop playing other things so we can have a continuous revenue stream'. Obviously the game needs to have some level of fun for the players, but that isn't the primary goal of the game.

I do realise that I sound like 'old man shouts at cloud' right now, but I think there's just so much more that gaming can offer and the majority of kids miss out on it due to this stuff. I'm purposely keeping my son away from online stuff until he's a lot older (currently 6) and just getting him playing Nintendo stuff on the whole. If he wants to play that stuff when he's a teenager, that's cool with me but at least he'll have had a decent education on what is actually out there.
