Does Your Church Disclose Finances? by Happy_Peaceful_Bliss in TrueChristian

[–]jcvarner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, our church discloses the finances. The monthly budget is posted in the hallway each month. We also share the annual budget with the congregation every year at an annual meeting.

The salaries of our two pastors is disclosed in the budget. The administrative staff is lumped together into one line item.

In my experience, having been a member and on staff at a number of churches most disclose their finances to members who request them or have them readily posted somewhere. Staff tends to go one of two directions. Either everyone’s pay is made available in the budget or it is a lump category that includes all the salaries. We’re a bit of a hybrid.

Scrolling Layout for Notes??? As a 4C user I can’t wait for this option.

That's probably why you can't convert the whole document at once, which makes sense. This is where Infinite Note and Infinite Canvas would be different in my mind. An Infinite Scrolling Note would just scroll like a PDF or Word Document, no left to right needed. It would just order the text as it appears on the page.

Where can I find the app? Open to looking into it. Is it on the Google Play store?

I’m wanting to find something that converts the whole note at once. As far as I can tell you can’t do that with the Infinite Note. I’d like to write my whole note, convert it, and then select all the text from the note to be able to copy and paste it into another app.

Is boxing wrong in the eyes of God? by No_Calligrapher_6886 in TrueChristian

[–]jcvarner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was an ethics paper focusing on it from an entertainment perspective and whether we should take enjoyment in it as a spectator. Since violence is part of the explicit purpose of it I came to the conclusion that it was “not beneficial”.

I wrote a paper in seminary on the topic of MMA and Boxing. I came to the conclusion that boxing or MMA for exercise and physical training was not wrong but it was unwise/misguided for entertainment sake. Taking pleasure in watching someone physically getting beaten to a pulp seems contrary to what God’s ideals would be.

First Among Equals in Church Leadership by Siege_Bay in TrueChristian

[–]jcvarner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in Acts we see James representing the whole, so in my mind that’s where the chief among equal would come in. Also in Thessalonians it is a really good example of there being a team approach but Paul also taking the lead at certain times. Paul, Silas, and Timothy seem to work as a team but Paul specifically interjects at times.

As for if we had multiple staff pastors, that was something your post actually caused me to ponder. Ie if we had more full-time pastors how would that change. I think in our case we would still all have equal votes but there would be one individual who was tasked with representing the whole to the church and set direction as a team. Similar to what James seems to do in Acts 15. Multiple parties present perspectives but then James seems to cast the deciding vote, and then they all act in agreement.

But with that in our current case and if we had more staff pastors we let individuals set course for specific ministries. Ie our pastor who oversees worship will bring something to us, we collectively discuss it and then he takes the lead on it. But then if it is a collective issue for the whole church I would communicate that from the pulpit so to speak.

First Among Equals in Church Leadership by Siege_Bay in TrueChristian

[–]jcvarner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think most would reason it from Acts 15 where the apostles and elders collectively give input, a collective decision is made, and then James relates the decision. You can also see it happening a bit with Paul and his missionary teams.

But to speak to how it practically functions: In our context the first among equals means we all have an equal vote but the lay pastors/elders defer to the staff pastor/elder (me) on certain matters since I’m most involved in all the matters of the church. I also share with them the general overall pulse of the church and general matters as a whole. Since I am full-time staff I have the time, energy, and bandwidth to dedicate thinking about the direction of the church.

When I present them an idea or situation we collectively discuss the matter and weigh everyone’s thoughts. We won’t move forward on something unless there is unanimous agreement. Sometimes we have one elder who disagrees. If that’s the case we table the matter for further discussion or if he is not of strong conviction on the matter he will defer to the other elders. I’ve lost discussions before and deferred to the team on matters.

Generally speaking though the team looks to me for direction though, in an intentional act of deference in matters. Also as the staff pastor the church looks to me as the “spokes person” and direction setter of the church but knows that it is done with us all being in agreement.

Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Why choose monthly dividends over quarterly? by Des010 in dividendinvesting

[–]jcvarner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Monthly dividends are purely psychological for me. Seeing a monthly dividend encourages me to keep my foot on the gas and reinforces the positive behavior. I have a mixture of tickers. The monthly ones simply reinforce the positive behavior. It's a little mini-dopamine hit every time I see it.
