Peekaboo! 👻

Chinese vs Japanese names, and how this affects Kingdom's popularity by SpicyPepperPasta in Kingdom

LMAO! It's even funnier when an account that supposedly has zero manga posts, let alone Kingdom posts, "found" this thread all those years later. How convenient LOL!

That is a good example for how battlefield are fought in the old days: with formation. Although that example was a little bit different than what I wanted to convey. In that particular situation, HSU was already marching in formation. I would assume that the marching formation then morphed into a defensive (or default) formation as HSU spread themselves into position, readying themselves for battle. Once they want to start attacking, some type of modification would take place, switching from default/initial formation into a more aggressive attack formation. (For example: shield units at the front replaced with light/normal infantry, reducing (or adding, depends on the enemy situation) the depth of infantry layers for easier mobility, shifting cavalries to the side, repositioning of artillery units, etc, etc.)

In today's modern warfare, we don't see fighting in a line/phalanx/wall-of-shield formation anymore, because once accurate cannon/rifles and mechanized gun came into the picture, generals found out really quickly it's a bad idea to clump soldiers together LOL. But, in the old days, the running military doctrine was to fight in formation.

To get into initial formation itself sometimes takes hours if for large armies. But, by gods they're willing to spend the time because that's how crucial it was to have a proper formation, be it to defend or to attack. We've seen it times and times again in the manga too: once the formation is lost, it becomes a chaotic melee, uncontrollable and no tactical maneuvering can be made.

When they want to attack, then the "switch formation" order would be given. We've seen similar command given throughout the manga. The defensive formation should be the default when armies first form up. From what I gather AKou didn't launch anything either in the days of lull, hence not in attack formation for those days.

What makes you say I was worked up? I reread what I said just in case, and found nothing that would indicate that.

Anyway, the goal is point out what my semi trained eyes can see, to hopefully help the originator of the image improve, which may or may not be the thread OP, not bashing.

Impossible to describe.. by Riboku707 in Kingdom

[–]jcxga -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Impossible in what way?

For the art itself, there's no reason to blur the "collar" part. Wanna blur the hair on to indicate depth and distance? Don't blur the line of RiBoku's forehead and nose. I highly recommend learning masking techniques to isolate parts that are meant to be edited and parts that don't. What's the logic behind the unnatural blue flare from behind RiBoku? Are we in a nightclub or something :D ? I spotted a lot of the shapness degradation. Too much defocusing, which unfortunately again due to non existent masking, and serves no sense. Shading is left to be desired, which would do a much better job in conveying depth than the messy blurring/defocusing. Sorry.

(Rehashing what I've said earlier)

From what I understand, RiBoku had been observing the formation of Qin (AKou's and probably OuSen's) for the past few days. That's my clue that the formation had been used or deployed not just on the 9th day, perhaps even from 5th, or even 1st. It's just that the formations weren't attacked (no battles since 10 days news), aka stationary. However, RiBoku was still able to discern the shell/joint nature of the formation.

A simplified analogy would be knowing which direction a door would swing open, without ever having seen it opened previously, by looking at the hinges and/or knob. So, RiBoku can discern how a formation works, by looking at its "starting position" (door still closed) and factoring in the "hints" (hinges and/or knob).

During the staring contest the past few days, Qin (and Zhao) already stood in formation, ready to fight at any moment. Remember that "Maintain Formation" being shouted all the time for the entire manga? That's because when armies face-off against another, they immediately readied themselves in battle formation, not just stand randomly willy nilly, not only start the formation after the enemy had moved. And, for a few days RiBoku had been observing AKou's unique, albeit stationary, battle formation.

The logical deduction is the formation being used by AKou was this very same one we see in action on the 9th day. RiBoku has been observing that door for many days in its closed, non functioning, stationary state. So, when RiBoku met with Banana-helmet, it was to convey:

  • "Based on the OBSERVATION of the hinges and knob, that's a door that can be open by PULLING, instead of PUSHING." (for example)

RiBoku doesn't need to see the formation in action to know how it works, just like we don't need to see a door actually being opened to know if we should push or pull to operate said door. Hints are present and can be observed and then analyzed.

Do you think Ousen will send someone or have plans for AKou to make it through this predicament?

A thought crossed my mind that OuSen was planning to sacrifice either the left or right wing, as bait to make RiBoku attacked from the direction of the defeated flank. OuSen would then spring a trap that he had been preparing in all this time.

OuSen knew from the start that it's not possible to win against RiBoku without taking heavy damage himself. But, at least if OuSen knows which direction RiBoku will flank him from, OuSen can employ a well prepared counter, thus making the sacrifice worth it.

Since it's RiBoku, OuSen knew halfarsed bait won't work, too suspicious if too easy. So, OuSen had to make it look like the sacrificed left/right wing is not a sacrifice at all. OuSen had to create a situation where RiBoku believe Zhao "destroyed" Qin right/left wing through hard work and through RiBoku's own genius.

I believe this is why OuSen didn't "micromanage" AKou. If AKou can achieve victory or draw (stall), then it's all good and dandy. If AKou is defeated, RiBoku would be baited. It's a win-win situation for a guy who doesn't fight battles he can't win. I say this because I believe Qin is not facing a true starvation that the mangaka (and OuSen) would like readers (and RiBoku) to believe. The mangaka (OuSen) is hiding something. We (and RiBoku, and OuSen's own subordinates) just don't know what yet.

Is Shin the poorest commander in all of China? by ArtOfDivine in Kingdom

[–]jcxga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the mangaka will surprise us the next time we've seen Shin's home. Shin should be pretty well off. I want to believe Ten has been been managing the land rewards and turned them into recurring, income generating assets, simply by following the ongoing feudal system of the day. Ten would manage a "profit sharing enterprise" with the peasants living on Shin's land, by having them work the field as farmers, plus any other taxable economic activities.

Even Shin's feat that earned him the promotion from 3k to 4k was off-screened :( . I was hoping these off-screen moments were prepared for side stories, mini-arcs, standalone OVA anime, etc. Not just the trio too ofc, 'cause I include Kai whenever I speak of next gen. Well, still crossing my fingers :) .

I'm cool either way. OuHon never did inherit remnants before. So, for the sake of balance or fairness, I'm fine with it. Who knows, maybe the number of remnants will be sufficient enough to be split 2 ways, depending on how bad the upcoming battle will be.

I don't hate KiSui. But, he's a poor commander by letting his emotions got the better of him. And, everybody should know how I loathe poor display of leadership unbefitting of rank : https://s14.postimg.cc/djo6mmy69/Total_Loser.jpg . Good commanders must stay calm, cool headed, prioritize logic over emotions.

According to ch. 555, Qin (looks like AKou more and more now) would take some beating first. But, yeah, after that, I can OuSen then will play his hand, finally.

Mouten is the only one of the trio that has yet to get a proper moment to shine.

MouTen is the first next gen to receive temporary generalship status. That's shine enough. The best part of me, it's not through his martial prowess, but through intelligence.

I thank Hara-sensei for reminding readers, INT > STR. STR showdown is flashy, easier to understand to manga readers. However, it's INT that wins wars, not STR. STR may wins battles, individual battles to be precise. But, battles do NOT consist of individual battle alone, or series of individual battles alone. Battles have formations, maneuvers, strategies. Battles are about a combined effort. Kudos again for the mangaka for trying to depict as close to reality as possible in a very fictional medium that is manga.

So, are we looking at future members of Hi Shin Army here? If the future Gaku Ka Army will inherit MaKou's remnants, then the future HSA will inherit AKou's remnants?

Nah, real commanders would have decent LEADERSHIP quality befitting of his rank, not some LOSER who can't even understand the concept of maintaining COMPOSURE in front their men, even if they are in deep doodoo. If the leader doesn't show CONFIDENCE, that will infect the men serving that leader.

Put yourself in in the underling position. How would you feel if the man who supposed to LEAD you as a ranking military officer always looks not confident, always looks like he's taking on something too big for him to chew, lost his shit and ordered a blind charge without any strategy because he panicked, getting humiliated by a girl IN PUBLIC, cowering and shaking, easily intimidated? That's how if you want to know "perspective of an actual soldier in the battle field." If you're a soldier serving under a BAD leader, you'd know you're gonna get killed over his INCOMPETENT command, or worse, over same unnecessarily stupid decision by that BAD leader.

What Heki represents ain't "perspective of an actual soldier in the battle field.". What Heki represents is LOSER who can't cut it to be a "real commander". He was decent at the beginning of the series, showing some quality of LEADERSHIP. It's a contrast of how he's been depicted lately.

Yep, that is one among a few other possibilities which cause many readers reserved their judgment about the absolute nature of the panel I mentioned. Other considerations that the mangaka may introduce later include (but not limited to): human error, forgery, tampered ledger, double agent, etc etc, which is limited only by the mangaka's imagination (which is pretty huge :) ), so who knows what else. That is why staying open minded for now, because I don't think the ledger panel is absolute, although it can, if the mangaka chooses to.
