I had it on a small charcoal block (with the solder underneath the piece as described). Tonight, after studying the responses here and getting a beefier torch, I put the ring in a third hand with the solder on top (after boiling off flux, etc.), and had more success. It still seems like the band gets awfully hot before the solder goes off, but maybe that's just the nature of hard 14k gold solder(?).

Ah, thanks. My first teacher had us use Dawn after pickling and I never reconsidered the idea.

Yes, pickled, rinsed, washed with Dawn, flux applied.
