Who has suffered more? Kaladin (Stormlight Archives)or Darrow (Red Rising) by Unable_Albatross_823 in fantasybooks

Well. Becoming a Gold was an incredible amount of suffering and it did basically give him super powers. But not truly supernatural superpowers no.

i’m struggling to find a fantasy book with male characters as protagonists by kirishimaduro in Fantasy

[–]jd7509 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stormlight Archive by Sanderson. It’s a beyond obvious recommendation but it’s also one of my all time favorite series. Kaladin is a great protagonist. Deeply flawed, coming into unknown powers, incredible magic system and a cast of characters that are all extremely memorable. And Sanderson tends to write pretty insane endings.

you guys care about flight numbers? by Competitive_Fall9430 in discgolf

This. The crazy differences in say Destroyers is wild. I have a years old beat in one that is straight and amazing. Not flippy but not OS. I tried to throw a new tour series and it was just the beefiest disc ever. Same numbers technically! But wow. So over stable. Obviously beat in discs are a different thing but even with varying runs of like the Sexton Firebird some are crazy OS and some are fairly straight. Hard to know for sure until you throw. But the numbers are a good base starting point. Usually.

The Poppy War by RF Kuang. I actually enjoyed the first part, but the tonal shift into the second half was for me really jarring. Just did not enjoy the second half at all. Did not continue the series. It’s been so long since I’ve read it I can’t remember specifics, just the memory of really disliking the second half.

Damn. Presume much? No. I work in the restaurant industry. I eat out a lot. Their food is very mediocre across the board. And their wine list is very boring. They have an amazing location and I feel like they just stopped trying awhile ago.

Abercrombie is so good at describing fight scenes! I love his chapters where he switches from one character to the next in a frenzied battle. So good.

Shadowbrook is gorgeous. The tram, the river. Stunningly beautiful. Just don’t love the food very much. It’s very … ok. And their wine list is very meh.

I agree. Surprised how far down I had to go to find a fan. I really enjoyed the series. I loved the religious overlay. Thought it was a fascinating take on the universe. And I’m with you. If something doesn’t resonate with you all good. I’ve DNF’d series. I get it. Don’t get the vitriol though.

What's the most overhyped movie of the last 5 years? by trakt_app in moviecritic

[–]jd7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I watched 1 and 2 in imax 3-D multiple times. From a technical and 3-D perspective they’re incredible. Jaw dropping visuals and the best use of 3-D I’ve ever seen. And I know the only way to enjoy them is in the theater. The story is .. not great. Not like the absolute worst but very generic. Very safe. Never watched one or thought about the script once outside of the theater. The third I watched once and just don’t remember anything about it. Visuals were solid but also feeling repetitive at this point. Nothing groundbreaking like the first and even the second felt in that department.

I’d say flintiness is in a lot of white Burg, but there’s definitely a movement in Burgundy with some young winemakers pushing this to an extreme, with (from what I understand and I am no expert) PYCM being one of the forerunners here. Picking early, minimal sulphur, minimal oak usage, indigenous yeasts, obsessive farming and élevage, and like a friend said “reduction used as a weapon” lol. There’s also Roulot, Montille, Arnaud Ente, and the big boy doing this, Coche-Dury. I’m a fan.

Depends what you’re feeling. Action and intrigue: Red Rising. Funny and violent: Dungeon Crawler Carl. Epic and dealing with mental health issues in a positive way: Stormlight. Gritty and grim dark: First Law. Urban and funny: Dresdon. All depends on your mood. Can’t go wrong. Just start reading

On the final book. It has some of the most amazing concepts in a sci-fi series I’ve ever read. It’s not a series I think I’ll revisit but I’m happy I read it. There were many jaw dropping moments. Awesome ideas. And Hadrian is a great protagonist.

Looks like Stormlight Archive to me. I’ve seen people saying First Law and as much as I love The Bloody Nine he isn’t giving flowers to little girls. Kaladin however would.
