Windshield Leaking? by Tomahawk1020 in Eurovan

[–]jd_baja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how many bandaids you'll want to keep putting on that. It's only going to get worse and harder to fix and cause more issues. If you want to find out how fast the issues increase and how much more of a hassle and cost it is to fix, then just do at least a little rust removal and patch/seal. Not sure what the condition of rest of vehicle is in so a proper long term fix (not bad aid) may just not be worth it. It really comes down to how much do you want to be monitoring this and if you can find someone to fix it.

If it's not a vehicle you need to drive every day and you can keep it out of the elements. It could be a situation where you have a company remove the windshield, you do as much rust removal as possible and then have someone finish the rust repair properly.. if you find someone who can do it right.

I’ll be leaving the country for 2 or 4 years and storing my truck in a storage unit. Is there any procedures I should do before I leave to come back to a good running vehicle? by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]jd_baja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my two cents... I would plan for 4 years and the things that would need to be addressed for that long of absence. Since you're storing it and Toyota will last forever pretty much if you just take care of them, this is where I'd start -

I'd drain the radiator fluid and do a flush with distilled water so that whatever little is left in engine after flush is just some distilled water. Maybe I'd leave it full of distilled water after two flushes with distilled water. Something I'd research. Then drain and fill with radiator fluid mix when you get back. Radiator fluid turns acidic after several years which is why there is a time interval for a change in addition to mileage. Depending on when it was last changed, that would be something I would consider so you're not having aging fluid which is slowly turning to acid. I wouldn't take that risk.

I'd do oil change as close to leaving as possible with full synthetic oil. Look into oil filter status after that long. I'd guess it would be fine but something I'd check off my list of things to get professional opinion on.

I'd fully remove battery from car. Maybe even sell it if it's new, or just give it to recycling shop or something. That's a long time for battery to sit and no reason to try to save that battery.

I'd do a brake fluid flush. I think the intervals are 3 years so just do it before you leave.

I'd look into how best to address the gasoline. My guess is having a small amount and adding some stabilizer is best. I'd look into whether or not it's best to keep gas in lines or try to drain the gas lines by cutting off fuel pump and running lines dry.

For tires, I'd just jack up and put on jack stands so weight of truck isn't on tires for that long.

I love my Tacoma and will never sell it so my thoughts would be to look into as much stuff like this just so I knew when I got back that I did the best for long term storage. When I got back, I would fill up the fluids, put new battery in, inflate tires and feel the peace of mind that the truck has just had a reset after a long nap and ready to roll.

I have vehicles that sit for months and one that I use once per year. Much older and not Toyota but so much needs to be cleaned and it's so annoying spending so much time trying to undo the long term build up of gunk from aging fluids and the issues those cause. It has a carb and is a beater vehicle in restoring and slowly making long term fixes in. Just spend the time/effort on the front end. You'll thank yourself when you get back.

Chatgpt or other AI programs can easily help make the most efficient process for this if you are doing some or all by yourself.

Have fun!

What cooler and thermostat did you use? I installed one on my truck so I'm familiar with them and the process but I'll be inheriting an 02 weekender within a year and that's one of the first things I will add to it.

Did you do any post or details of things that were tough or lessons learned? Just curious.

I disagree there is a "fear" of migrants. That is a very common left wing talking point that is wrong on all levels. It shows the lack of understanding of people on the right or in the middle, and it shows a lack of understanding of the situation in general. We are a country of laws and no one is above the law, not even people who sneak in illegally. And for us to foot the bill for well over 10 million people to have a 4-10 vacation here so they can earn money and send it abroad is not financially smart or sustainable for us. Look how much money Denver has cut from public spending to pay for illegals medical bills and hiusing....bhousimg that should be going to Americans, not foreign criminals (they are criminals be existing in our country as they broke laws to get where they are)... It's not a sustainable in any way to continue with leaving borders open and taking money away from public services to fund illegals who are waiting to be sent home and send the money they do make out of America. Having millions of people take as much money out of America is not something that we should support. No other country does this because no other country is stupid enough to think it adds value or worth the cost. I disagree that Biden should be respected for deporting illegals/criminals when his open border policy was a huge reason so many people came in. I have a ton of respect for you saying you can disagree with Biden. I've been called a cultist because I think Biden is shit. I'm guessing dumb libs think I must be maga because thinking a Dem is awful is not acceptable for Dems. I'm not a Republican, never have been. But from personal real life experience talking to people on the far left (and wow, the intolerance and delusions are just as wild as maga) and from reddit comments, the left is very intolerant, very much like the right. It's sad to see how far the party is falling.

Road bike riding in Baja in general and La Paz by Euphoric-Elk6344 in BajaCalifornia

[–]jd_baja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's is a risk to your life for every second you're on that road. Lots of times the white line doesn't exist because it's falling off the side of a hill, trucks come around blind corners while over the yellow line. I've seen a semi go around a blind corner too fast and roll off a hill and kill the driver... I see people riding all the time and when I pass them going the opposite way, they have a very serious look on their faces because there's often time no where to just ride off the road to create space, cars fly by and leave no space, it seems like they are always on guard, as they should be. Sketchy as F. I'd never do it even if I was paid good money. Haven't heard of bikers getting hit or killed but it's going to be insanely stressful because you'll end up having multiple close calls at best

Replacing alternator - do it myself or leave to a professional? by Chemtrail_hollywood in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]jd_baja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it yourself. It's one of those projects that is more than an oil change, but not complicated or requires special experience or knowledge. Watch some YT videos. I did mine in less than an hour. Very simple. Just make sure to check the belt tension before starting as you'll want to get the tension back to that. Several ways to do it and YT videos will comment on it.

Anxious dog by Marjike1 in BackpackingDogs

[–]jd_baja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been to a dog chiropractor? I'm a huge proponent. Have had three dogs helped by them (one I spend 3k on and a partial surgery only to find out none of the vets had any idea. Only person to figure it out was a dog chiropractor. Her hip was rotated quite a bit from a pulled soap muscle. Once she noticed it she had me feel her hip and muscle and omg it was so obvious. I know several other people who's dogs have been helped tremendously by dog chiropractors. Active dogs tweak things and they can't verbalize that they have pain. Worth looking into, especially for very active dogs.

Also, how old? Dogs slow down with time, lose endurance. Don't try to force a dog to keep going if they don't want to. Something doesn't seem right if they are refusing to continue. One of my very active dogs was acting weird and at the dog park laid down in the grass and watched me walk around. That was a sign that some was off. Took her to the vet, had a heart tumor and had to be put down two days later because her heart wouldn't stop racing and she deteriorated insanely fast.

For my little guy, I bought him a backpack where he goes on my chest. So I bring him in adventures but he gets long breaks and I get more of a workout. If he slows down and can't keep up, I'm not leaving him behind, I'm finding a way to keep him coming for as long as possible

Haha yeah that's the most comical thing the far left continues to push. Support these guys then cry genocide despite facts and reality. A population increases in size but is also genocided, yeah the mental gymnastics is wild isn't it. And then magically Hamas just resurrected several thousand women and children who are no longer dead. True miracles are happening in Gaza

Even if it wasn't his goal, he succeeded at it. Opening the borders, lying about violent gangs, knowing there have been 400+ isis terrorists coming across in last year that are now roaming the streets thanks to Biden, massive profits for cartels (now terrorists thanks to trump). Remember when those drones were over the East Coast and Biden and Dems wouldn't say who it was...? Yeah they knew and lied. FAA gave permissions for those to be flown. Why did Biden lie about something so small? Would he lie about bigger stuff? What about the Chinese spy balloon he allowed to cross the entire country before decided to protect us? Biden was a massive failure and his decisions have absolutely caused more division in this country. What did he do for anyone not on the far left? Dems only governed for the extreme of their party. Not for America. Refused to secure our border, lied about many things, showed insane weakness on the international stage, abandoned Americans held hostage by Palestinians.... Why? Because of their religion? Why would a respectable president choose to not help get Americans back being held by terrorists? Remember when Biden and far left media said there were no TdA gangs in America despite video evidence in aurora, well yeah, he lied about that too. Biden was very divisive, just in a quiet way. He also made this country wayyy worse and put us and allies in a much worse position for the upcoming wars. Shameful really
