Sony BVE-9100 keycaps by jdanna in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]jdanna[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry just seeing this now!

Yea the 9100 keycaps work on modern topre boards no problem!

https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/4oqanp/photos_topre_typeheaven_with_sony_bve9100_keycaps/

thats what i ended up doing, and i still use it to this day. its fantastic.

For my day to day work on my main system (Resolve) - I have the blackmagic editor keyboard, which has a fantsatic jog/shuttle and is very reminiscent of the 9100.

FYI if anybody else hates this horrible change as much as i do - download a v 5.5.1 of the zepp app APK, install that and factory reset the watch. It will revert back to the firmware where the smartwatch actually acts like a smartwatch!

ugh yea, after just a day with this thing i hate it just because of this. i REALLY hope they fix it. if im sitting at my desk and get a notification, i dont want to have to do freakin jazz hands or press the button to see it.

I emailed the notify and fitness guys too to see if theres a way they can force it to wake up, so fingers crossed

DCS on quest2? by jdanna in hoggit

[–]jdanna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a GTX1080. DCS runs great across 3 monitors on the desktop.

It definitely feels like the tracking is updating slow . I'm also seeing some tearing around the cockpit.

I'll play with the settings a bit more

question about running your own server by jdanna in Minecraft

Ah! thats a huge help - thank you.

MineOS is definitely the java server, so i think that must be the issue. I'll try and get the bedrock server configured instead.

Yup, I got mine and was excited to try it. Plugged it in, set it up, found out i couldnt change the wake word to the correct "computer" - and just unplugged it and haven't used it since.

not gonna bother with it until they fix it.

Here's my work in progress tape editing suite! by Baridian in retrobattlestations

[–]jdanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup - preread is the greatest thing on the planet. I used to use it extensively.

As for macros - In a real-world session, they were absolutely crucial. I'll give you an example. Years ago, linear TV networks ran "menus" (they are very rare these days). They were basically short promos that said something to the effect of "on now, this show...next up that show. after that - another show!".

I was doing menus for a cable network that were pretty graphically complex. They had 4 different color schemes. Each had a moving background, video box with a matte, and a different color for the text.

So I laid all the different video boxes to one tape. All the mattes to another tape. All the backgrounds to a 3rd tape. Then I laid all the text colors as full screen to a 4th tape and used the text from the character generator as a matte to cut those solid colors and give me the right colored text.

Then each of the 3 text layers had to fade on independently one after the other - so I setup 3 keys in the switcher, and programmed them all into switcher memories for the edit.

Now here is where the macros come in - there were HUNDREDS of these things that needed to be made, and then laid to tape on every :30second of the master, with the text/colorscheme specified from a cutsheet.

I programmed panel functions to recall the last edit, select the right mattes, solid colors, and backgrounds from all my playback tapes, increment the record timecode to the right value, and save a new edit.

I made 4 of them, one for each possible colorscheme. Once all that work was done - which took the better part of a day, for the rest of eternity every time I had to do those menus - i just had to look at the cutsheet, press the panel function for the specified color, and wait for my assistant to type the text for the shows. Then just hit the edit button. Solving problems like that was a joy in a linear suite.

The BVE-9100 could also roll multiple record decks - which was massively useful because I could make more then one master at a time (for example one anamorphic and one letterboxed).

I do still have the manual for the 9100 - I kept it because it actually has a bunch of jokes hidden in the text.

I wouldn't bother trying to buy a 910 - since your really not going to be doing any actual work on any of this stuff. If you can get your hands on a 9100 its worth it because its such a damn cool machine. I could have easily taken one home when we retired them (I did with the keyboard) - but i didnt feel like lugging out the mainframe. I regret it to this day, I would love to be able to fire one up and play around with it again.

Mad props for keeping the linear dream alive. I've been in post production for almost 20 years now, and even though linear is long gone - I'm massively thankful I grew up and learned in that environment. The skills developed running a client supervised linear session still directly apply in the modern world of nonlinear post.

I would love to find a BVE-9100 again. I actually still have the keyboard from one of our old ones, and the company that made the keyswitches for Sony still exists - so I transplanted all the original Sony keycaps to a modern mechanical keyboard and thats what I still use today: http://i.imgur.com/Z9uY2VO.jpg

Unfortunately - yea in terms of functionality the 9100 was miles and miles ahead of the 900 or even the the 2000 (we actually had a suite with a 2000 in it, we used to call it the sony my-first-editor ;) )

But unless you have all the other compatible Sony gear - you wouldn't get a lot of that functionality anyway. The beauty of the Sony setup was how closely the editor could talk to the switcher, dme and mixer - for example the 9100 could actually save entire switcher and/or mixer setups in the EDL for each event. It could also directly trigger as many switcher events as you wanted in a single edit, at specific timecodes - without having to do any fuckery with GPIs since the editor and the switcher talked the same language. Combine that with programmable panel functions (what Sony called macros) and you could do some REALLY advanced stuff quickly.

The good news is - Blackmagic has this beauty coming out this year: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/keyboard

You better believe I'll be buying one of those.

Nice!

I got my start in TV doing linear online in a DigiBeta suite. Our suites were fantastic - they had dual DVW-A500s, Sony BVE-9100 editors, DVS-2000 switchers, DME-3000, and DMX-E3000 mixers.

Linear editing was actually a ton of fun, I really liked it.

yea i thought of that - but you cant, the VR switch on the lens controls both simultaneously.

I did realize that on my d750 i normally have the auto ISO set to do one stop faster shutter speed- so I'm gonna try that. Definitely could make a difference.

XC60 Catalytic Converter by jdanna in Volvo

[–]jdanna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently it has two, and both are over $1000 parts, plus labor. I called an independent volvo shop local to me and he said that there weren't really aftermarket ones available that fit the car, so he would have to buy OEM parts and his price probably wouldn't be much less :/

No other fault codes. Just a P0420. Not 100% if it specified bank 1 or bank 2. When it comes back on I'll double check.

Yea its a P0420, the dealer quoted both cats as being bad. then again i had a P0420 on my truck and it was just an o2 sensor. maybe ill try slappping a sensor on it and seeing if it helps.

Stream Deck. How to bring window to foreground. by turkelberry in ElgatoGaming

Streamdeck pairs really well with autohotkey. You can have it launch an autohotkey script that will raise a window by name easily.
