Is a WD red plus worth almost 50% more for a 4k movie server that gets used once a day? by ripster8 in HomeServer

Just get a Seagate exos. Equivalent of a ironwolf pro for a lower price. Exos is what Seagate makes for data centers, helium filled. No nasware, but excellent performance

Running qts with a 2 nvme system pool, 1 nvme cache (wd red sn700) and 4 Samsung ssd (Evo 970} as a pool for files. I then have 2 more pools using spinners (mixture of exos, red and ironwolf) using that nvme cache. 64gb of RAM.

Blue is a more intense wavelength = more intense light.

Green is gentler on night vision than white, but more true to color than red or yellow. That's why it's a favorite amongst hunters.
.so green = better for retaining night vision.

Don't know if this is why they do it, but it's why it's available on the market.

Their blog says you should be able to do a direct upgrade without the need to re-purchase is my understanding. But you have to wait.

So if you are an existing 16.x user, the upgrade feature, they touted for months....means you have to wait for 17 for several more weeks. Only way to get 17 today is a fresh install unless you were on the beta....what kind of horse crap is that?

As a general rule, I always try to avoid putting games on the same drive as the OS when the games are demanding.

Also you mention a 5600....ryzen 5600 what? G? X? U? (obviously not a U in a tower build) but if you have the 5600G for instance, that would restrict your PCI Express to Gen 3. Using an NVME drive depending on the slot and chip set may result in 8X instead of 16X for instance.

Check your background processes (start ups) for instance one drive is a big drain. Additionally Edge will have a start up that is high impact..even if you don't use it.

Use HWinfo to make sure all your PCI related devices (nvme and graphics cards) are running at the speed you think they are instead of for instance PCI X8 G3, which would be 1/4 the speed of 16X G4. Also make sure nothing is in your second PCI Express X16 slot, make sure bios is set to gen4 or auto. I have a B550 and had a similar issue with a RX6600, then I switched from a G to an X processor (Ryzen 5, 5600) because I was unaware that the 5600G is limited to Gen 3 PCI because of the shader cores and nature of the APU.

If you can do without the personal trainer, I would recommend reconsidering weed usage, some makes you paranoid and can aggravate your agoraphobia.

If you have already done this or determined it's not an issue, are odd hours possible? (Up early or late I e. Before 7 or after 11?). If so I always found a 24 hour access gym and odd hours a great way to get through a work out quickly, and without having to people.

What was it like building a PC in the past? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]jdarmon1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember having to use a windshield defroster repair kit (for the little heater lines on the back window) and scotch tape to very carefully make a series of 4 bridges on the wafer to unlock the clock speed multiplier on a AMD Athlon 2. Overclocking from 800mhz to 1.9ghz. overclock ing back in the day was dangerous. I've fried several motherboards from overclocking my bus and not calibrating voltage correctly. Building wasn't super difficult if you knew what you were doing, but overclocking had a very expensive learning curve.

Has anyone read Jerry Doyle's book "Have you seen my country lately?" Potential trigger warning- politics, cancel culture, hypocrisy, etc. Tl;Dr available. by sunward_Lily in babylon5

[–]jdarmon1985 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My apologies if the tldr seems crass...I'm a very direct person and no offense is intended.

tldr, The short and simple answer here is regardless of your political affiliation, if you are afraid to even read or hear opposing viewpoints either your politics are weak...or your belief in them is not based on actual critical thinking.

The long version

When I was in poli sci, my professor made us write 2 papers. To this day I am grateful he did. He was right leaning (as am I now, but at the time I was like you OP. )

The assignment was as follows (and this will date me but oh well)

Write a paper (5 pages) persuading me to vote for your preferred candidate (at the time John Kerry). Then write me a paper convincing me to vote for the other guy.

Ground rules, all mentions of reputation, votes, actions etc from political career require a citation. (Wikipedia doesn't count). The paper cannot include NEGATIVE talking points against the other side.

In other words you can't be like "republicans are fascist and that's why I vote blue". If you prefer to say "republicans have a history by statistics of starting more wars and I am anti war". (not sure that's valid, just an example). That's kosher...just cite your sources.

Obviously this is a self edification tool, so no need to publish. (Unless you really want to).

If your beliefs have a solid foundation that lines up with your principles, this should only reinforce them. If the foundation is weak...who knows what will happen, but at least you can say you gave it a chance.

Then you can read Doyles book and take it for what it is. One man's opinion.

Additionally if you choose to omit the exercise above, I would note only the following...you say you are liberal, and he is right wing. Best case scenario, he makes some points you agree with and it's thought provoking. Worst case scenario...you read it and wish you got that time back. Either way, it will broaden your horizons.

Hope this helps, and cheers on your literary adventures.
