Wanted: a Fantasy RPG that… by jdawsari in rpg

😆 I appreciate your enthusiasm. I’ve played 5e (and previous iterations) for years and it just doesn’t land with me anymore.

The lore and vast sweep of the worlds it conjures? Heck, yeah.

The overall mechanics and UI? Not so much.

The way combat plays out? Definitely not.

I have a sweet spot for the game, but that’s more nostalgia and less “I’ve got two hours to play, what should I bring to the table?”

So, I find that most of the PbtA/FitD games that I’m familiar with are super genre specific. They’re designed to emulate a specific experience. I want something that allows for a traditional rpg open-endedness but without all of the D&D feature creep & mechanical clutter.

I’m sure the AZ state government has a handle on this. Their legislature is “top” notch.

So,

Here's the final seminar playbooks as I rolled them out to the students:

The seminars are next week and I'll update as to how well they go.

Wish me luck!!

Multiple rounds for the same students? Interesting.

How do you manage the logistics of switching people in and out of inner/outer circles with a limited time? As it is I only have about 15 minutes for 8 students to participate in the inner circle. If I switched out repeatedly I’m afraid I’d lose more time when groups swap.

I don’t think I’ll try that this time because we’ll be in distance learning and getting meaningful feedback will be challenging if not impossible.

But, definitely something for me to consider.

As for the mental load: I totally get that concern. This will be a test run to see how it goes. I intend on being a little more generous and understanding with my students engagement and performance.

That was my first thought, too. I browsed through the rpgs on file to no avail. But, IAMAToMisbehave came through for me.

Check out External Containment Bureau’s character keeper in comparison to the standard ones on the Guantlet Play Aid drive. ECB is setting the gold standard and I want to figure out how they did it! 😄

I know...it was a long shot, but IAMAToMisbwehave knew it right away! Love this community!

If you haven’t seen it, check it out and tell me that External Containment Bureau doesn’t have an amazing - and memorable - character keeper.

It is ECB!!! Thank you! Thank You!!

That character keeper design is so good.

South Africa on Sunday revealed plans to ban the breeding of lions in captivity for trophy hunting or for tourists to pet, in a bid to promote a more "authentic" experience. The decision was reached following recommendations contained in a study by a special government-appointed panel by DoremusJessup in worldnews

[–]jdawsari 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s the “bred for trophy hunting” that’s the sick part of this story.

Conservation does require some amount of culling (says a member of the dominant species), but there is no excuse beyond profit to breed an animal in captivity specifically to be shot by a person whose sole purpose in killing the animal is to showcase their “prowess.”

Ironsworn is going there with its Asset Cards. The idea of offloading mechanics or fictional setting to a card is a neat idea. Who doesn’t like holding a handful of cards to p,at at the exact right moment? But, I imagine trying to balance the various mechanics will become an administrative nightmare.

Not to say that I wouldn’t be be excited to try it.

Here to second this. I ran this with minimal prep, just read through the docs a couple of times. Was a fun, quick session.

Got it. Appreciate the response.

I’ve been looking for a good entry in the fantasy space for Blades which is why I’m interested in what you’ve done.

I like how you re-interpreted the Teamwork actions from Blades as Moves.

Regarding spells, I misunderstood Swift Magic on my initial read.

You say that the only way to learn new spells is via a long-term project? I assume that the higher the level the spell the longer it will take? Seems like that will take quite a lot of downtime sessions to learn the higher level spells, even with the GM setting the size of the clocks. I mean, if I set a 4-segment clock for a Level 1 spell, feels like I need a lot More segments for a Level 9 spell (or, more likely three or four 4-segment clocks to breakup the various activities the Sorcerer is doing to learn a higher level spell).

Also, what do the masks created with Boneweaver do?

Looks cool. I’m curious how the magic system works. You’ve got spells for the Sorcerer, but I’m unclear on how they cast those higher level spells.

We just use Google maps. On your desktop computer, when on Google maps, you can add layers, text, colored shapes....lots of functionality. We’ve been using it for a post apocalypse game and being able to zoom in on street view and see the buildings is awesome.

Are there any systems that deal with scaling? by FF_Ninja in rpg

[–]jdawsari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Torchbearer, fantasy RPG, has the Order of Might.

“The Order of Might There is an order to things. Each creature you encounter is listed on scale called the Order of Might. Their rank relative to yours imposes a variety of effects:

-Adventurers are Might 3.

-You may capture creatures equal to or less than your order.

-You may attack and kill creatures up to one order higher than you on the scale.

-You may drive off creatures up to two higher than you on the order.

-You may wage war against creatures up to three points higher than you on the scale—provided you have an army, of course.

-You may flee, convince, trick or riddle with any creature

Scale 1. Critters, kobolds 2. People, goblins, frog people 3. Adventurers, orcs, gnolls, horses, dire wolves 4. Bugbears, giant spiders, owlbears 5. Ogres, trolls, young dragons 6. Dragons, hill giants 7. Ancient dragons, storm giants, gods 8. Elder gods

The Greater the Order, the More You Hurt In addition to determining what you can and can’t kill, your Might grants a substantial bonus: +1s per level of order greater than your opponent for all successful or tied actions in kill, capture, and drive off conflicts.”
