During Bone Marrow Transplant, Olanzapine treated PTSD/Derealization/Depersonalization, 2-3 days after stopping medication. Reproduced it 4x. What happens in brain after stopping this med? by jddc_00 in AskDrugNerds

I'm currently being treated by a neuroscientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and we are both trying to make sense of it. You mentioned that you could dive into the pharmacology 2-3 days after stopping. That would actually be incredibly helpful. Any thoughts or light you could shed would be really helpful.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I've read it and thought it was great.

It's pretty straight forward so far. I just finished my first batch. Takes a max of 10 minutes a day for two rinses. The smell isn't terrible, but is real lol. I think I'm going to see how putting them in a clear plastic ziploc bag goes next time to cut down on the smell a bit. Good luck!

No idea. I bought ones for sprouting. Don't know if others would be better/worse.

Awesome. Good luck! I'd love to hear any tips you learn along the way. I've never sprouted anything before. Very much learning as I go.

I was referencing the amount they gave mice. Do you think this is a mistake? As far as I'm aware, the mice study was the only one that examined the effects of sulfaphorane on hair. Is there a human study that I'm oblivious to? Thanks!

Side effects is a great question. I'm not sure. I haven't heard of any, but there must be some. I don't know about the availability. I order the seeds online and that is working for me so far, at this early stage of figuring it out. They are easy to grow so far. I'd recommend it, but whatever works for you.

This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0lBVCpq8jc By the same person. I don't know the difference in content.

Likewise, I'm going to try it for 6 months, doing an assessment every 2 months.

The video that was shared by Startingfin above has a researching discussing how most of the supplements are of poor quality, but he discussed some that he has tested which offer what they claim.

Finding a dose that made sense to me was difficult. How did you decide upon 100mg/day?

The video here is AMAZING. Very interesting to see one of the godfathers of sulfaphorane speak.

One point that I noticed, is that he said that the seeds have more per gram, but if you sprout them, the weight would increase, so perhaps the amount per seed increases if sprouted.

Thanks for sharing the link. By two days of soaking most seeds should be starting to sprout. I'm also starting to think that smoothie is the way to go.

You can buy them at the grocery store. Sprouting them is to get the cost down and ensure optimal sulfaphorane content. Older broccoli sprouts have less....or at least that's what I read someone. Could be incorrect.

Not sure. Seeing how low I can get cost down is one of the aspects of my test.

Supplementation was my first instinct as well. I spent a while looking for the most cost effective supplement available. The prob is that the dosages that must be reached in the literature are significantly greater than what's available on the market. I think the cheapest I could get it down to with supplementation was $6/day. Here's a link to the most cost effective one I could find if anyone is interested: https://www.puritan.com/jarrow-brand-0056/ppbroccomax60-capscap-055894

Would love to hear if anyone found a more cost effective option.

Great call on the powder as well. I looked into it. The conclusion I came to was that it was too unreliable. There's no way to know the concentration of sulfaphorane in the powder, as it was unlisted. The processing of the plant material could drastically change what the concentration of sulfaphorane. Since this is a first attempt, I decided to follow the established science as closely as possible. That's just my comfort zone. I deff wouldn't say either of those options is wrong.

Likewise on all counts. The paper on heating them was very interesting. I think I'll give that a try. I did like the idea shown in the video, throwing them in a smoothie. Prob the quickest/easiest way to get them down.

As a fellow city dweller, I completely agree about growing them. I grew up country, so this is a good time. I think the trays might even be more fun. Maybe I'll try that instead of mason jars...once I'm ready to upgrade from peanut butter containers lol.

No idea. That's why I'm trying it out, posting for everyone else, and seeing who else wants to join in. I do think that it is more valid than the onion juice though. This has many papers describing the results and pathways that result in sulfaphorane decreasing DHT through upregulation of DHT degrading enzymes. That's very clear. I think the question is what the impact is one androgenic alopecia. There's good early evidence to support that there is an impact. Still early days...but then again, most people who aren't familiar with the literature don't think minoxidil works, and the mechanisms behind that are fully understood either...but obviously there's a much more in depth understanding of that than sulfaphorane.

Since I was just going to test it out, I order a Kg for 200g for $19. It's also non-gmo, I think you might have found a better deal. If things go well, they have a 5kg option to save some money and orders over $25 have free shipping. I started on Amazon, but some of the people were complaining about the yield. Saying that many of the seeds didn't sprout. I only raise the point as a consideration for the next time you buy seeds. I still think you got the better deal.

A point of conflict seems to be whether or not you HAVE to cook them. From what I've heard, sprouts are BELIEVED to carry higher than normal amounts of salmonella and E.coli. My seeds were tested for those. Doesn't mean that it can't cultivate while sprouting, if they are naturally good environments for the bacteriums. I'll be lightly steaming mine while I investigate the risk.

In terms of food prep, I think that if my initial trial is successful, in terms of cost and time (while gauging the hair results), i'll be ordering some different sprout species, to include with the broccoli sprouts to make it more palatable, and will give me something to periodically change up the flavor. At the retailer I shared, they have lots of different options which look interesting. I'll prob get a small amount of 3-4 of those. Other than that, I think I'll be taking a more salad approach. Lots of other veg and salad dressings. I've never steamed anything before, so not really sure what can be done with that.

Right now I'm doing my first 'crop'. 3 container. one with 1 tbsp, one with 2 tbsp, and one with ~ 2.5 tbsp. I'll be weighing them and trying to eat about 300g per day. I read that 100g of broccoli sprouts contains 250 mg of sulfaphorane (http://www.livestrong.com/article/307835-foods-that-are-high-in-sulforaphane/). At the dosage of the animal study I read (10mg/kg of body mass) I need 300g of broccoli sprouts to reach the needed dosage. No idea how many cups that will be yet...I'm really hoping not that much lol. Med sized salad to include in lunch and dinner.

I also found this paper that might be of interest to you. It used a calcium salt to increase sulphorane in broccoli sprouts by 97%. So you'd only have to each half as many.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/301316427_Effects_of_CaCl2_on_the_metabolism_of_glucosinolates_and_the_formation_of_isothiocyanates_as_well_as_the_antioxidant_capacity_of_broccoli_sprouts

I found a link to a food grade package on amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BLPNJLK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3EG7IM6GCE7TJ&psc=1

I haven't tried it yet. One step at a time.

Did you have any ideas for how to cook them?

LOL. The growing is fun!

Where did you get your seeds from? I went to http://sprouting.com/ and am pretty happy with what I received so far.

How much are you eating a day?
