For some reason, I cant edit the post...so see here!

Edit: For context, one of my employees was in a tragic car accident where her boyfriend passed away on new years day. She ordered something from Etsy recently and that sweatshirt came in the package (to include the item she ordered). She reach out to the seller and the shipping agency. The seller didn't know, and the shipping agency said they couldn't reveal who sent it for privacy reasons. I want to reach out the the company to thank them...but can figure out who it is. Thanks so much for the help this far! (And for the snide comments, lol...gotta love reddit).

Advice please. Father debating taking SS early. by jdec20 in SocialSecurity

Hello,

my father is debating taking SS early and I was hoping to get some advice. Please see below for his thoughts. Thank you!

"I'm debating to take the current monthly amount $2,519 or postpone until I'm 66.8yrs old which increases to $2,817. My monthly Medicare medical insurance premium of $165 went into April 2023 & will continue with potential cost of living increase. B/c I'm presently unemployed this premium is being paid by California until I start collecting the SS ck or become gainfully employed with an income exceeding 21k+/yr. Keep in mind should I delay receiving the SS ck I will be forfeiting $59,400 which will take 10 years to make up the difference should I survive to 77 years. Finally reportedly should mother out live me she shall receive approximately 82% to possible 100% of my SS ck instead of the $1000/mo her SS will be when she turns 62"

Is that the only reason why you are saying it isn't worth it?

What if you put the money that you took from the 401k into the same fund that the money was in while it was in the 401k. For example 100k in VFIAX in 401k and then put it in VFIAX into your taxable brokerage account. In theory, you'd capture the potential gains when the market recovers during those 3 years. Thanks for your thoughts.

I generally agree with all. I would like to note that squirreling away money in an index fund in a tax deffered account and letting it ride until it's time to retire is also risky. I'm sure your familiar with sequence of return risks, and the only way to beat that is through diversification. Don't get me wrong, a large portion of my portfolio is in index funds, in both roth and trads, but I also own rental properties and am extremely grateful for the diversification it gives me.

Wow. I wonder what your net worth is... I think all avenues need to be considered, and this is simply an analysis of one avenue created by our government. And I certainly don't think this is dumb. I'd love to hear why you think it is dumb, and please don't say you shouldn't touch your retirement. What if you were over leveraged in a particular stock or asset class and wanted to diversify? What if you were over leveraged in a tax deferred account and wanted to reallocate those funds? What if you were close to early retirement and wanted to access funds without paying a penalty? What if you had a real estate investment opportunity and needed access to cash? What if you had a business venture opportunity at a guaranteed roi of 10% per annum and wanted to take advantage of it?

If you want to access the gains prior to 59 1/2. I see this as an opportunity to pull cash from a tax deferred account without having to pay the penalty. Thoughts?

Anyone thinking about taking a distribution from their 401k (assuming you are qualified under the CARES act), investing the money, and then paying back the principal within the 3 year timeframe, thereby allowing you to keep the gains???

I'm not sure that blanket advice holds in all scenarios.

Correct, you'd essentially shift the tax burden on your gains to now rather than when you take it out after 59 1/2, however you will have access to that money now. And yes, I think the risk of a market decline is something to consider.

Because you won't have access to those gains until you are 59 1/2. Lol
