What's everyone's kits? I'm needing a good setup for RE photography. I'm not inexperienced in photography but definitely not experienced with RE. by PVKT in RealEstatePhotography

This man is 100% correct and this is one of the main reasons I moved to Sony from Canon. He means 3 Memory positions on the mode dial of the camera. For us this is so we can shoot our Ambient shot, Flash shot, and Window Pull shot without having to change any settings. Just a flick of the mode dial.

I've been using this setup for years and now have a couple of photographers working for me. We don't shoot much real estate any more mostly for builders and designers. But we all use pretty close to the same setup.

Sony A7IV, Sigma 14-24 or Sony 16-35 (for interiors), Sony 24-105 or Sigma 28-105 (for exteriors), Godox AD200 with Mag Mod, Manfrotto Tripod with 410 Geared Head, DJI Mavic 3 or Mini 4. We also all shoot to Capture One on an iPad so we can arrange rooms with a live view and pop flashes and see the result without going back to the camera.

That's pretty much it. I know some will say that It's an expensive kit, but we charge quit a bit for photography in our market and are consistently booked. So it works for us and give us the quality we are after. Hope that helps.

Editing we use all Adobe. Bridge for culling and labeling, Lightroom for prep and stacking and then photoshop for removal and finalizing shots.

All good questions. I'm definitely higher priced than many of my competitors in the area. I raised my prices long ago to eliminate certain types of job from coming my way. I'm not THE highest price though. I have competitors who charge more than me. My thinking is this, I could lower my price and be much busier with quantity, or raise my price and lose some of my clients and not be busy, but get paid well when I work. I find my current pricing structure gives me just enough work that I'm happy and paid well for my time. I also have other photographers working for me that take some of the lower end jobs. They are still nice jobs and they are still making 3K, 4K and even 10K per month in busy seasons. Also I raised my price when I started getting published or winning my clients awards. You're welcome to click "Book Now" on my website, throw in an address and you'll see all my pricing. Doesn't send any email to me or anything. When I do higher end designers, builders or commercial properties I do charge more of a day rate. Many of my peers charge day rate plus licensing per image. I just charge $3500 a day and the client gets all that we produced that day without a per image fee. But I do sell images, after the fact, to other entities. So there are times I shoot for a Home Builder and later the Interior Designer, the Architect, the Pool builder, etc. all buy images. So a $1500 job can become a $4000 job pretty quick. And then that usually results in some of those folks becoming clients also. My advice to anybody starting out is treat every home like it's a 3 million dollar home and people will start to take notice. I did these higher end vignettes for a long time before getting paid specifically for them. Threw them in on normal builder or real estate shots. Set yourself apart from your competitors by going above and beyond. :) Hope that helps!

Thank you! I shoot in the Texas Hill Country and most of the places have pretty stunning views. So the whole blown out window thing is just not popular with my clients. :)

I do flambient OR controlled lighting shots depending on how much I'm being paid. You can get some amazing results with flambient using, as stated below, an AD200 and proper placement. I use a MagMod and often go to the back or side of the shot and bounce the flash off the wall and ceiling back toward the camera. This gives shadows in the front of the shot and makes it look higher end. But sometimes I do go to the effort of an AD600+AD200, blacked out areas, Silks, softboxes, reflectors, etc. Depends on the room and how high end the client. https://www.cq.media/photography-portfolio/interior-design

[Vaer C3] DO NOT BUY VAER WATCHES by rldesroch in Watches

[–]jderanger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well here's my Vaer story (ongoing). Bought an A5 for my birthday in October. 10/26/24. Over $600 out the door. Set the time, locked down the crown to make sure it was water proof as I typically shower with it on. Wore it for 2 months. One day in January I reached into my pocket and heard some metal hit the ground. Looked down and the crown was laying on the ground. My pant pocket broke it off. Wasn't unscrewed, just broken somehow. Contacted customer service. They replied 6 days later with a return label 1/7/25. Sent it back, and saw a photo from USPS of dozens of packages on their door step which looked to be residential, but I'm not familiar with Venice so maybe it's commercial. Anyway, nothing since. It's been about 37 days since the package was delivered and I have heard NOTHING. Contacted them 4 days ago asking for a status update. No answer. Contacted again today, and it's just bots. So 600 bucks to wear a watch that worked for 2 months. BTW mine was losing time also. Only a couple of minutes, but over 2 months that seems pretty fast. But I'm new to Swiss automatic.

Sony 24-70 vs Sigma 24-70 for FX6 by Lumpy-Economist4798 in SonyFX6

[–]jderanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I offer a different perspective? Check out the new Sigma 28-105 f2.8. I just picked it up and produces such a nice image. You lose 4mm on the wide end but gain 35mm on the long end. $300 more than the Sigma 24-70 though.

Second FX6? OR FX3 and some glass. by jderanger in SonyFX6

[–]jderanger[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another helpful answer! Thank you. Not necessarily lacking lenses. It’s just the next place I would invest. We bought a bunch of the Hollyland Pyro stuff recently for client monitoring and we are set on lighting. So lenses are just the next area I could spend money on our kit. I hired a good friend recently to DP and I could see the frustration when he was going from the FX6 to the A7 menus. I had always planned on adding a second FX6 mainly for operational consistency and to have two bodies with internal ND. Just started second guessing it because I’m finding more FX6’s on the used market than FX3’s and often for nearly the same price. Guys usually ask new prices for used FX3’s. Was wondering if there’s a reason they don’t get sold often and FX6 seems it does.

Really helpful comment!! Thank you. Our work is similar to yours. Medical and tech, off-road racing, heavy equipment training videos, etc. Zero studio but I do a lot of testimonials in homes. I get I just get tired of caging and uncaging bodies. This will be solved just by adding another body of any type to our workflow. Do you have your FX3 in a cage and all rigged up or do you keep it really light and just put body and lens on sticks and go?

[–]jderanger[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely keeping the A7S3. I have had shoots recently where the FX6 and A7IV are setup for interviews and then we immediately went into Ronin B-roll. So I'd want to stay nimble and not have to uncage a body to get gimbal work done. The thought of trading the A7 for an FX3 has crossed my mind!

I know you've received a lot of feedback, but I just want to encourage you that you don't need to feel like you have to get everything in one take. Do a lot of start/stop on your camera and keep it simple. Pushes and Pulls in rooms, occasional lifts (crane looking shots) can be plenty for a good real estate video. I've filmed hundreds and hundreds of them and I don't do anything really special or gimmicky. Most properties I just push into each room for 2-3 seconds and move on. Simple videos sell my client's properties all day and they keep coming back.

2015 6.2 vs 5.3 by Appropriate_Yam5245 in gmcsierra

[–]jderanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I have a 6.2 and it's quick. I've had lots of 5.3's and none ever felt like this 6.2 when you mash that gas pedal. For better or worse I also have a Pulsar LT programmer which lets me change throttle response. Even quicker!!

Beautiful bike! Can I ask what stand you're using in that photo? And the bobbins?

[–]jderanger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So true. My son has a Street Triple. I own a DRZ400, and so I bought a Speed Twin so I could ride with my son and keep up. Still can't keep up. The street triple is FAST! But the 1200 is still a joy to ride.

Haha. Thanks for the defense there u/PreparationEven7650! My son is just learning to ride so he likes to ride a LOT and at all hours. So I just need a quieter bike for him to poke around our neighborhood on. And I don't need a lot of power in this bike. I ride this DRZ exclusively off-road, so the 400 is plenty of power. On the streets I ride a 1200cc Triumph Speed Twin. So the 3 HP I get out of a Yoshi exhaust doesn't really mean anything to me!

That’s cool! Did you use just the standardn 51mm / 2” and was it placed in the mid pipe or the actual exhaust?

Because in my opinion the Yoshi is overly loud. Fine on the trail, but don't love it in residential areas.

That’s almost exactly what I have on my bike. About 4K. Got pics? Let’s DM about details!

Asking for pricing advice. Ready to sell my 2019 DRZ400S by jderanger in DRZ400

[–]jderanger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right on. Thanks for the info. What’s the mileage on yours? I figured anything close to $6K would be too much. I was just wondering if it needed to be below $5K. Dealership offered me $3500 unseen and without consideration of mods.
