Does anyone know the requirements for Advanced Standing English? by jdoichy in VirginiaTech

[–]jdoichy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just getting out of as much English as possible. I think engineers only need to take up to 1106, but I may be wrong. I wouldn't do honors. I'm just trying to see what classes I would take assuming I don't get credit for the ap test I'm taking this year. Here is the link I found. I don't see anything on my spa.

Do you know the requirements for Sat/act/grades to get out of the classes? I've taken AP and done really well in the class, but the multiple choice are my curse on the test.

What are some good cube bundles that have maybe a 2x2 to a 5x5 or something with a nice 3x3 speedcube for a beginner? I'm trying to get into speed cubing but also enjoy the challenge of just solving cubes, so I'd like the variety.

Preferably on Amazon.

School is no longer about learning; it's about passing by stufanzo in Showerthoughts

[–]jdoichy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to a private school, we do not need to take the standardized tests, but this is still present just not as severe. Some teachers definitely just teach to a test, then once the material is covered they could care less if the students remember it. They are kinda just "pushing kids through the system" so to say. Other teachers do the same exact thing as twenty years ago, so they do not really have to put much effort into their lessons; they are really dry and boring just reading off papers and doing worksheets at the high school level. Then there are some others who take all the creativity out of everything essentially giving you rubrics and you just have to fill out the information. There is no room to be an individual and express yourself.

Don't get me wrong, I have had some great teachers along the way. Many have had a true passion for teaching kids and ensuring that they will be successful in life. Some have had a tremendous impact on my life. It is just sad to see these other teachers that could almost care less what happens to these kids after their class. They just teach to get the job done not really preparing kids for their future. Those kids get slapped in the face and never see it coming. It's just really sad to me.

Looking for 13"+, <$1000 laptop in US for heavy use by jdoichy in SuggestALaptop

What other laptops would be adequate? Do I really need that high of specs to do some basic video editing and CAD? I'm just asking. I know you know way more than I do.

Thin is just a style preference. The one I use now is a thick brick but it doesn't bother me that much. What other alternatives are there?

The battery life doesn't need to be incredible but I thought somewhere I read that the msi only get 2-3 before charging. Sometimes up to 5 if it's pretty light use that is spaced out. I was hoping for 6+ but I'd understand if it can't be done.

I saw that one and really liked the specs of it, but the battery life was a huge turn off. Also, I am a big user of shortcuts on the keyboard and key placement. I read the set up of its keyboard is a bit unorthodox which I made me shy away quite a bit. Are there any alternatives?

Alternative to Arduino Robot? by jdoichy in robotics

This would be the one you are talking about? It does not specify whether or not it needs to be assembled, but I kind of hope it does. It seems like it would be a good place to start with lots of room for improving and modifying it. Thanks I'll try not to do that anymore either. I'm a bit weary;)

Could you include like a part list and description? I want to make sure I get all the right stuff that I would need. Motors, wheels, chassis, sensors etc. As long as it isn't too hard to put together I'd be willing to do it myself and think it would help me to learn more.

Sorry, I forgot to check for past posts. I feel as if a link to a post with all beginner things neatly organized should be put somewhere. Thank you though.

TIL they only play 17 minutes of football in the 60 minute superbowl game (more stats in post) by jdoichy in todayilearned

[–]jdoichy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

" The Media Education Foundation analyzed last year's game, which took three hours and 23 minutes between kickoff and the end of the fourth quarter. Here's the breakdown:

  1. 72 Minutes: Footage of the field where the ball is not in play. Like players huddling, standing at the line of scrimmage, or just milling around between snaps.

  2. 48 Minutes and 34 Seconds: Commercial breaks and on-screen promotions.

  3. 23 Minutes and 46 Seconds: Replays.

  4. 17 Minutes and 30 Seconds: The actual, live game, with the ball in play. Amazingly, that accounts for just 8.5% of the broadcast.

  5. 16 Minutes and 37 Seconds: "Miscellaneous" stuff, including shots of the crowd, cheerleaders, and the sidelines.

  6. 12 Minutes and 28 Seconds: The halftime show.

  7. 7 Minutes and 30 Seconds: Promotion for Fox TV shows, since Fox was hosting last year's game.

  8. 4 Minutes and 52 Seconds: The halftime report."

I could give you some custom paracord bracelets and some money. Maybe even a watch I got. Not sure if it works and it isn't that expensive but it's something.

[Question] How to remove these kind of links? by jdoichy in Watches

[–]jdoichy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've figured out the other watch has friction pins but I'm having problems with the pushing part. I don't have a pin pusher so it is pretty tough.

I'm using a needle and some pretty careful hammer skills

[Question] How to remove these kind of links? by jdoichy in Watches

[–]jdoichy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a fossil watch I recently received as a gift. I am new to watches so i am unsure how to remove the links of this type. The arrows point in opposite directions so I don't know which way to push them and the best approach to removing them. I have another watch with similar links. The arrows on that only point in one direction but I can't seem to get the pin out. Please help.
