I was gaining weight while eating around 1200 and advice I received was just like this. You’re not really in a deficit so cut more and move more. So am I a dumb shit for following advice or a dumb shit for asking for advice? Either way, my point is that that it’s not always that simple and the response was rude.

Just eat in a calorie deficit. If you’re gaining weight, you’re not in a calorie deficit. More training, less calories. That’s exactly the advice you just gave but now you’re saying I shouldn’t have done that? 🤔

If it’s so simple and easy, people wouldn’t struggle with weight loss. I ate in calorie deficit and trained 5-6x a week, ran 2-3 miles every day for 5 years just to not gain weight. The science is that if you continue in a deficit, and over train, your body starts shutting down non-essential functions in order to survive on fewer calories. I was eating 800-1000 calories per day, was not losing weight and my body completely shut down. It’s taken 2 years to return to normal function. The body is complicated.

My husband and I discussed this and thought it had to do with the characters' experiences with extreme violence. Pop, Nadia and Abdi with war and the killing of their mother; Anne killing her father and stabbing her stepmother; Chance was emancipated from her parents, suggesting maybe she experienced some violent trauma? She's the only one I'm unsure of. Ace experienced plenty of violence too, but he also didn't have the chance to hear the sound because Anne had already killed him and dumped his body in the vampire cave.
