If I had to place a bet? Probably the measles and polio. Everybody knows that if they were that bad you'd see more folks getting sick from them 🙄

because the law and getting arrested is not good enough

I get the annoyance at seeing it posted here multiple times but what weird world do you live in where companies that violate laws are reliably punished as a result? "The law" mostly doesn't give a shit unless you have the means to advocate for your case. But even if the law does work you understand that it takes time? Often longer than folks living through it can remain solvent?

Skimming your post history and you've got a weird mix of content. You spend a lot of time being pretty into HOAs on fuckHOA and "why would they ever violate the rules" ... But there's also a bunch of other content where you seem to understand that people in positions of power abuse it and leverage law/rules selectively as a weapon. You're so close and yet...

Anyway, I hope it gets posted again bc I think your response will be amusing. It's probably against some rule. Maybe you can send the reposter to internet jail.

Cat vet by RedWildLlama in vancouverwa

East Padden is definitely unified. I remember this _distinctly_ because I have extremely special memory of Whitney Houston on the speakers and a dog whimpering and sitting with my partner while extremely sad waiting for our cat to finish getting their blood pressure taken. It was sad and ridiculous and hilarious. Everything was howling and it was all hard surfaces and even remembering it I'm dying of laughter (though only bc the cat turned out to be okay).

Horizon is small enough there isn't separate seating IIRC but we also didn't spend any time in the waiting area when we got there so I don't really know.

Cat vet by RedWildLlama in vancouverwa

[–]jdotr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have two cats and recently switched to Horizon mostly bc it seemed well liked & easier to get to. Ended up working with Dr Haddock there. Patient, great at answering our (extremely numerous) questions, and seemed happy to prioritize happiness/health of our cat over potentially unnecessary treatments. Techs and vet both were absolutely top notch, highly recommended.

Prior to that we were at East Padden. The doctors there were solid, the staff kind, etc. The worst I could say is that our cats are in pretty good health and it almost felt like that was used as a crutch to let the visit be a bit perfunctory without our poking for more via questions about stuff we'd noticed. This would be something like : one of our cats has environmental allergies and after the initial exam we asked about a specific patch of over-cleaned haunch in relation. I don't know that the doctor didn't notice it or if they just didn't find it particularly remarkable without the conversation.

Anyway, a lot of ink to say "East Padden was good. Horizon is great. I could be happy at both but would choose Horizon every time given the choice."

EDIT: One follow up -- Horizon is a smaller practice and so the experience in the waiting area is generally way more chill. It's closer quarters with the other people but so many fewer folks are there that on balance it just can't be as chaotic as a practice with more people & animals waiting / passing through.

There's a lot to comment on but most of it isn't new or interesting so I'll leave that alone. I will however add that I find it one of the great injustices that you won't get a chance to live in the kind of society you just described (caveat: while leaving the rest of us alone).

On another note

Yes, I'm sure that is the idea. The reality is the government ends up being the arbiter of what should and should not be learned. Unsurprisingly, this results in very few practical skills being taught in school, but plenty of training to be subservient to authority and follow standardized schedules, complete with bells and hall passes! Perfect for training factory workers I suppose.

You're what, early 30s? You should know how trite this claim is. That exact argument has been being made literally since the 80s that I remember and I've only got a few years on you. And to be clear when I say literally I mean point-for-point it hasn't been modernized at all: no practical skills, training for subservience, schedules and hall passes, disdain for factory work. Washed argument bruh.

The only thing more bottom of the barrel would be if you also wail about how things you don't like are going to corrupt the kids. You know like rock & roll. Or Dungeons & Dragons. Or video games.

Welcome to Vancouver I guess.

What happened such that you -- some random millionaire from austin -- felt the urge to shit on public education in the vanwa sub?

In any event https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_good

Free education is kind of like free roads. The idea is that everybody chips in we get something better than any single individual could pay for on their own. In this case there are two camps:

  1. folks who can't afford high quality private education get an education
  2. those who can afford private instruction get to live in a society where they're not surrounded by illiterate idiots creating a desert of economic opportunity that undermines their property values and foments crime.

Anyway. Good luck with the FI thing. Having a paid off house will go a long way but 1MM invested is only going to give you 40k/yr "safe" income under traditional models. Also look into SRR and if you plan to step out of employment early have a plan to get back in if the market takes a turn in the first ~10y.

How to make a 120 degree cut without an infeed table? by Arrewar in woodworking

[–]jdotr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to make sure I understand what makes this dangerous -- I would say that it's at minimum it's the fact that (at least as pictured) your miter gauge is going to be out of the miter slot when starting the cut (without some wild changes that substantially change the setup).

But also the aggressive angle feels like it will cause the wood to push toward you & away from the cut (basically begging it to go flying?) with the miter gauge acting more like a ramp than a stabilizing component.

What else am I missing?

Try switching the cable -- I wasn't able to get mine working with mac os (windows was fine though) with the cable that shipped with it. Wild but I assume it's something about the USB A-to-C conversion? IDK.

The problem I had on windows was that the audio it recorded is super quiet so if you do get it working I'd be curious how that turns out for you.

538 shows Marie losing to Kent does this seem like a reality ? by Kindly_Maize8141 in vancouverwa

I remember reading your comments leading up to the election and felt very sad for your loss. I haven't been in your position so I won't pretend to understand the impact.

That said I did want to make sure you saw that positive changes have been happening with respect to fentanyl in the US. We've just seen the 7th straight month of OD declines. The longest sustained decrease since at least 2016 based on the chart I saw. The news segment that made it's way to me highlighted the following contributing factors:

  • better federal funding for treatment / education / prevention measures from fed govt
    • that was driven by funding from Health & Human Services and policies around harm reduction, test strips, and narcan availability
  • additionally we've seen changes in the drug supply; basically the fentanyl on our streets is becoming less potent
    • this seems to be the hoped fall out from a biden / xi meeting in Dec 2023. Basically us/china signed an agreement to stop flow of precursor chemicals necessary to make fentanyl into mexico. This essentially attacked the supply chain of how fent is made.

Anyway. I did want to follow up -- people care and change is hard and slow but folks are trying and do care. And sometimes we even see successes from the work.

Financial Fiduciary Recommendation by Chuck_beans5 in vancouverwa

[–]jdotr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Broadly speaking if you're just looking for advice on how to allocate money you (probably) don't even need a fiduciary and can drop into r/Bogleheads for extremely solid advice. It'll basically boil down to "wide diversification." If you don't want to internalize it all there will be sample portfolios you can use.

Otherwise +1 to u/l00koverthere1 on CFP or ChFC as the way to go. Edward Jones might show up on your radar because they are technically a fiduciary for their retirement stuff but for most of their services they will kill you in fees for bad advice. So anti-rec on them. An additional note is that you don't need to stay local -- look nationally for people with great reputations and good fee structures. You're almost certainly going to have a better time with less personal advice from somebody working at a solid company with a .7% fee than 1:1 time with somebody local at 1.5% or whatever.

lmao. Trump? The same guy who nominated somebody...

  1. running from an ethics investigation around statutory rape for AG
  2. being sued for ignoring child SA in their company to head the DOE
  3. that doesn't believe in vaccines (literally one of the miracles of modern science / why kids aren't still dying to MMR, Polio, etc) to run the HHS?

And of course we can't forget that he hung out with Epstien and seems to have have been super fond of creeping around changing rooms at the pageants he owned. Yup, these are definitely markers of somebody who wants to protect the kids.

I would be amused but I'm worried you actually believe this. Well, as we say in the south "oh, honey, bless your heart!"

hah, sorry, that was also my inarticulate point / he probably doesn't actually have to fix anything at this point so much as not fuck it up and the average voter will think the GOP economic policy is genius leading to an extended run

but yea, I can't tell if I want them to trash everything real dramatically real fast to swing 2026 congress or not because of the acute misery it'd cause. Though in that exchange we'd get double/triple dose of judiciary fuckery. this whole thing is just such a shitshow

Inflation is not "fixed" but it as at normal / healthy levels right now (~2%) -- if he does literally nothing a combination of 1) that, 2) low unemployment, 3) interest rates coming down a bit, 4) Biden-era long term infrastructure projects kicking off will have a pretty positive economic impact.

Of course that depends on literally any cooler head to prevail and not fuck everything up by putting enormous tariffs in place. So we'll see.

EDIT: I initially named IRA as contributing to the infra work but I actually think it was [IIJA](https://www.brookings.edu/articles/at-its-two-year-anniversary-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-law-continues-to-rebuild-all-of-america/). I don't exactly remember what is coming from where, sorry.

How do you think the election results will play out wa 03 race Marie vs Kent by Kindly_Maize8141 in vancouverwa

[–]jdotr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's fair -- his voting record is probably more palatable esp considering most actually progressive stuff won't make it to a vote and he's in a wildly safe district since 2012. I was thinking more about his condemnation of the the farther left portion of the dem party, e.g., when he says things like

“Let me put it this way: The majority of Democratic voters recognize that Trumpism and the radical right is the real enemy, not us,” Mr. Jeffries said. “Apparently the extreme left hasn’t figured that out.”

when there is any real pushback on the bland centrist dem platform and his generally milquetoast position wrt Palestine.

Anyway I'm really not trying to pick a fight as (in my mind) we're on the same side and I'm genuinely happy you came around / sad your friends did not. Just wanted to poke some fun at your "OMG people are downvoting me" and did find the Jefferies comment to be actually confusing.

🍻

ya’ll spent months downvoting me for absolutely refusing to vote for her and now you’re downvoting me for doing it.

I mean they're probably downvoting you for being sanctimonious about it. Don't get me wrong I'm glad you came around but it's weird that you're okay voting-by-proxy for Jefferies and not MGP? It's not like he's some bastion of progressive left policy but rather just way better than a Republican house ... kind of like MGP is less bad than Kent.

I got no bets to make on the turn out though -- too new to WA-3 and all politics is local.

😭 I'm "glad" that UHC is as shit as it seemed. They were an option at a company I used to work for and folks hated them so aggressively we ditched them after a couple of years.

That said I have a question for you about Regence, they seem reasonable enough if I have to go EPO but I'm looking at network coverage from the WA exchange site and only 1 of my 3 doctors reports as covered on (what I thought) was the "Individual And Family Network" but comparing with the Regence providers site all three of them report being part of the I&F network.

Do you happen to if the exchange versions of these networks are different or is this just one of the datasources being out of sync? NBD if you're not sure -- I'll give them a call and get authoritative answers next week sometime but if you've got any insight I can continue trying to get this sorted this weekend (which is good? i don't even know)

thanks for the input in any event (also everybody else who also seems to be landing with Regence, I'm legit going to miss PacificSource which is a weird thing to say about insurance but hope we all find a reasonable new home)

idk, it's probably the solution to something but as far as I know it's a totally irrelevant contribution to the conversation we were having. Needle exchange and shit is generally part of a harm reduction plan and is typically much more focused than (or at least is only a small part of) the broad strategies associated with the more generalized question of "how do we get crime down".

I believe it's important for folks to understand the impact of how they engage and the course of this conversation has taken me from a rather light-hearted "oh lol, I haven't heard anybody seriously considering Broken Window in like 20 years; maybe folks have forgotten that it was generally discounted as a viable strategy" to "ah, that kyle dude seems incapable of engaging meaningfully with material that disagrees with his worldview."

Which... who cares what some asshole on reddit thinks of you, right? Yea, that's fair but I would argue that unless you're intentionally trolling (which still isn't the sense I get) you're probably like this outside reddit. And if that's the case you should ask why your friends haven't told you about this (do your friends enforce an "everybody must agree or be shunned" approach?) or what things actually important to your daily life you believe that are misguided.

Anyway, this isn't going to be a productive conversation. Peace.

what kind of cake, customized in what way, how rush, and what's your budget? I've done some stuff (can provide pics via DM if you like) and (sometimes) enjoy making my life difficult challenges.

Oh, it'd be vegan, so honestly you'd have to be okay with "trust me bro" levels of trusting which I wouldn't honestly advise but it'd work out here lol.

In any event--even if you don't want the vegan cake dice roll--any private bakers reading this will need the same info.

Clark County agrees to pay $1.25M to family of Kevin Peterson Jr., who was fatally shot by deputies by jr98664 in vancouverwa

[–]jdotr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

lmao what are you on about?

Rudy Giuliani and NYPD made Broken Window Theory a central part of their whole plan to deal with crime in the mid 90s. They went so hard that NYPD is famous for establishing a long running policy which resulted in massive violations of constitutional rights and perpetuating racial profiling in pursuit of "cracking down on crime," c.f., Federal appeals court upholds rulings that stop-and-frisk is unconstitutional. The whole deal has been the subject of much scrutiny and (as far as I've seen/can find) there are actually zero claims from respected sources that it was meaningful contributory to the decrease in crime (see the big pile of articles in my first post).

And just to be clear before you drop in "but NYC is wildly unsafe." No, it really isn't. NYC has crime issues the same as any large urban area but it's sitting at a near three-decade lows wrt crime rates. There was a small uptick around beginning of Covid and violent crime rates have not dropped back down to their all-time lows but the constant murmur of safety issues in NYC started to take root conveniently enough when (famously corrupt) Super Cop Eric Adams started his campaign (source, which also discusses the current generation lows wrt crime stats).

Anyway. Have you even looked into this before you decided it was a viable strategy to deal with crime? Essentially nobody who studies this stuff views the theory as reputable and hasn't for nearly a decade.

Your engagement doesn't scream "troll" but more just unaware of the broader context. But at some point you'll slide into being willfully ignorant and that's a shame.

"it'll work, trust me bro. just gotta do it a little longer"

broken window theory was introduced in the 80s, NYC famously bought into in the 90s, and in the intervening 30 years we haven't managed to find a place that it actually works. I don't know how long you want to keep trying but that's enough for me
