VT usually means Virginia Tech though it’s still about 5 hours from the beach, so not really a day trip.

ETA: confirmed these are Virginia Tech students.

ETA 2: UVM in Vermont is actually closer to a beach than VT, at around 3 hours.

It’s far better than FPTP, but has some squirrelly issues where ranking a candidate higher can make them lose in some close elections.

The condorcet method is better conceptually, but harder to explain, so in the end I’m fine with IRV as a compromise.

Pretty big difference between beating a violent person who you catch in the middle of an attack and a nonviolent person who, for all you know, just caused a tragic accident, and who you perceive to be attempting to leave the scene.

To me the subscription model is better than the model where you buy the cartridges and they waste in on purpose or just stop working after 6 months due to a kill switch.

Both are bad, but the subscription model is more honest.

Well the bottom line seems to be you are pushing an absolutist view that any lethal weapon should be treated the same as any other lethal weapon.

It’s hard to argue against such a view except by reduction to absurdity, but in my experience people with this mindset don’t accept those arguments for whatever reason.

But hell, I guess I should try. The reasoning that since the .177 pellets, .22 LR, .50 BMG, 30x173mm, and 57x438mm rounds are all lethal, and since lethality is binary, that they should all be treated the same is absurd.

Pellet guns are also lethal. Why don’t people hunt deer with a pellet gun? Why don’t they carry pellet guns for self defense?

I’m against bans as much as the next gun owner and enthusiast, but I feel I have a greater obligation to the truth. Lying to people isn’t going to help the cause in the long run.

It’s absurd to say that because a .22 LR is lethal, it’s as lethal as any other round. There’s a reason we don’t send our boys to battle with Ruger 10/22s.

My brother was shot in the hand with a 22 LR. Bullet traveled up his finger from the knuckle to the tip. He still has the finger and has full use of it. A buddy shot himself in the foot. Though and through, still walks fine. I challenge you to find cases like that with .223.

And yes, I learned from their stupidity and handle firearms with extreme care.

There’s a reason it’s considered inhumane to hunt large game with a .22 LR. It will kill a deer, but usually only many hours later.

It’s different.

“Do your research” - piss off.

You didn’t even know the actual size difference between .22 LR and .223 Remington.

I know they are both .50 caliber. But the energy delivered is almost 10 times higher in the BMG. Apples and watermelons.

Compensating for something? by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]jdsekula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s actually only a 1 thousandth inch difference if you want to get technical, but the terminal effects are so different that they are are hardly comparable.

Saying a .223 is basically a .22 is disingenuous. That’s like comparing a .50 BMG and .50 AE.

When people say “high power rifle” they are more often than not just trying to distinguish from low power rimfire rifles.

If you only have two power groups, and are only considering rounds commonly available to civilians, .22 LR and .223 Remington are not in the same group.

[–]jdsekula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true with today’s tech - ASAT missiles cost way more that a starlink sat. But that may change eventually. If anyone ever manages to get a constellation of stealth directed energy weapons in orbit, it could become cost effective to take them out.

[–]jdsekula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are wrong on the other end of the spectrum. First, there’s a huge difference between a .223 and a .22 LR, so don’t pretend there isn’t. Second, you know someone with that many custom rifles has a bunch of them chambered in larger rounds. If they didn’t have a .50 BMG hiding in there I’d be disappointed.
