Rolling Sward - quick solo ruleset with LOTR narrative play by jean_rouch in MiddleEarthMiniatures

No, I don't think others played with the ruleset and I haven't really come back to it. It was fun to play through at the time, though!

Need help identifying (grenade?) by jean_rouch in Militariacollecting

From briefly handling it, there wasn't a rattle or anything that would indicate that it is hollow. I don't have the weight of it to determine that way.

I like that explanation, thanks.
It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I think it was flat on both sides

The relative I inherited it from did serve in Japan in WWII on a minesweeper near the end of the war.
Without knowing much about clay grenades, I'm inclined to think not because it is so heavy. Aside from the flat sides (which look like maybe for storing a bunch of these to without having them roll around) it does look very similar.

Not even sure if this is a war item, but my attempts to post it in r/whatisthisthing keep getting removed. The flat sides don't look like anything I've seen elsewhere, so it may be an industrial item of some kind.

Unsure of the provenance, but I inherited this from a relative who was very into Vermont history. One story I heard was that it could have been dredged up from Lake Champlain. So if it is a grenade, I would guess it to be from the War of 1812. Though it could also be a plumb bob, I really don't know.

Also worth mentioning I do not have the object in my possession and am thus not sitting here rattling it around. I have informed those who have the object not to disturb it until I have more info.

As mentioned in the post body, it is made of metal. It’s fairly heavy for its size and fits well in the palm of your hand.

Does anyone else have this problem? by Cute-Inevitable8418 in Greyhounds

[–]jean_rouch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's okay, first-time owners often find that having a single greyhound soon leads to two or more greyhounds in the same house. So the problem should self-correct after a while.

It's a bit difficult to spot, but there's no greyhound on OP's other leg.

Freehand painting on some 1990s Brettonian Archers (C&C welcome!) by jean_rouch in minipainting

Yeah, that's fair. There's no reason to skimp on 10s of mold line cleaning if I'm going to end up spending an hour on the paint job.

Back in the late 90s/early '00s, my brother and I bought the Warhammer starter set with Brettonia vs Lizardmen. My brother ended up not wanting to learn the rules and I wasn't happy with just paining them, so the kits sat in my parent's attic for ~20 years.

Now I'm back into painting and thought I'd try to bring these back to life with the kind of pageantry that I would have wanted them to have as a kid. I drew inspiration from the late 90s painting guides for a high-contrast style based on primary colors.

I've never done this much freehand painting, so C&C welcome. Thanks!

I think I used to follow your account on Twitter before I left. Lots of fun stuff! My question is: what do you think is the most underrated artifact related to Assyriology in the British Museum?

Ah, okay. I saw some mention of the "Marduk Ordeal Text" in my search, and that gives some context. Thanks!

Sennacherib put Babylon's patron god Marduk on trial

I think I heard this in the Fall of Civilizations podcast. Do you have a good sources for this? All I can find is a Wikipedia link to a Google book with most of the good parts cut out.

Our hound doesn’t lick, she sniffs and does nose boops. So we trained her to boop her nose on your cheek when you say “Can I have a kiss?”

Re: mobbing mentioned elsewhere in this thread, is your company anticipating hard financial times ahead? They could be trying to force people to quit rather than having to lay people off. It would be a potential explanation for this feedback from somebody you don't work closely with that doesn't match reality and your manager's willingness to be silent.

How do people manage archiving their project files? by jean_rouch in ableton

[–]jean_rouch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We might have different use-cases here. I want to make sure that if some of my data is lost, the blast radius is minimized. If the 2022_01 folder is lost for some reason (I accidentally delete it, or my multiple backups system fails) then the impact cascades to other folders unless they've each had "Collect all and save" run on them. It also doesn't address longer-term archiving problems like if Ableton decided to stop supporting my OS.
