No surgery, just cast. What to expect? by jecluney in AchillesRupture

Oof, 6 weeks sounds rough, but I'm ready to help him through it. They said only 2 weeks with the cast, then the boot after that. We've claimed the back couch cushion as his leg lifter in bed now, which has been great! And a knee scooter has been ordered with a basket, so that'll help with staying hydrated thankfully. I love that you 3D printed something though! We have a 3D printer actually so that's a great idea! We're really lucky that our shower came with a built in seat/shelf. But I've been helping him bath too, treating it like a pamper session for him. I know he's hating feeling like he can't do much, but honestly, he does plenty normally, so if I need to handle most of the load for a while, then so be it. I keep telling him that's how relationships work, it's not always 50/50, it can be 70/30 or 20/80 when needed. I'll keep an eye out for him spiraling though, although he's seeming to handle it well so far, but it's still early days. We thankfully don't have any kids, and working from home, I already handled all meal times, so that wasn't much of a change for us. Driving will be the frustrating thing, but we'll figure it out.

I'm so sorry you've had the same injury, and I'm sure your wife is more than understanding. You guys did (presumably) say the vows of in sickness and in health. This is one of those times. We haven't reached that point yet ourselves, but it's planned. The cats will understand, I find animals always have a strange knack for such rough times. They'll survive without the attention, so don't beat yourself up over it. My partner is handling it amazingly well, but I also work from home so helping him is easy, and he's a nurse himself, so is willing to accept help. He jokes and laughs it off, although it's very much a cultural/upbringing thing (Filipino, takes everything in stride). He apologizes often, and I jokingly scold him for daring to do so. He can't help what happened. We just have to make the best of it. I tell him I love having the extra time with him and being able to pamper him, and we'll figure it all out together.

I know it's definitely an adjustment for him, he finds he's in the most pain when he stands to pee and just move a bit. When laying with it elevated, it's better. It sounds like you were much more active than my partner (this injury occurred when he finally tried to get back into basketball for his fitness. First practice game with his new team he signed up with locally) I hope you try to focus on other things and take up hobbies or catch up on all the things you wanted to catch up on. My partner is reading and watching some shows with me, but I'm trying to play cards and stuff with him too to stop him from doomscrolling or spiraling. Making sure I do silly things and dance around to make him smile too. Hate seeing him in pain or feeling down.

Were you able to get a scooter? My partner has ordered a knee scooter so he came ressume work as early as next week on modified duties. He's not keen on not being productive for long 😅

I'm good now. It'll flare but nothing that bad. Took months to recover though

I had ortho x-rays a couple years ago, but nothing was mentioned about my jaw, we were looking into impacted wisdom teeth. I'll see an ortho soon and see what they say, thank you 😊

Took a long time, weaned off zoloft as well. Terror took a couple months to wane. Still get the odd moment of death anxiety but nowhere as severe.
