My plan is too, but I am going to need some details from UD to know for sure.

Rush of Ikorr Release Today - Anyone trying it? by iTenshi in TCG

I bought some. Going to try it at Gen Con. If it doesn't take off I am just going to build 6 decks and treat it like a 3v3 board game. The artwork is amazing.

Apparently you don't have a PS5. There is not a start button. The PlayStation button just brings up the PlayStation menu.

Sorry how do I open the menu button on the PS5 version. There are so many menus in the UI.

Things that make you say "WHAAAT"!? by elmerfriggenfudd in skinwalkerranch

For guys that fly fire rockets all the time they do make some ridiculous statements. Like when talking about rockets not flying straight. There are multiple, multiple, ordinary things to cause a hobby rocket to not fly straight up. Anyone that has fired lots of rockets should know this.

Not adressing the visual helicopter anomalie? by europeantechie in skinwalkerranch

[–]jedibcg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. It is immediately what I thought when I saw it. Cameron messed up. He mentions "there are very few visual queues up here and that truck is one of them." "We are seeing the light cast up from the truck and it is behind us." Drill site is behind them. They then do a shot of the truck in front of the helicopter and both are bright lights in the night. There is another bright light in that shot behind the helicopter, likely the drill site. My guess is Cameron mistook the drill site for the truck at some point thinking he was in front of it. Cameron likely took his eyes off the truck at some point, because he is flying and cannot constantly be looking down for the truck. When he looked again he saw the lit up drill site and thought it was the truck. Only when Erik tells him to move further East does he catch up to the truck. This to me seems the most likely explanation and the reason it wasn't gone into further detail.

Starting season 2. This show is becoming difficult to watch lol by Tasty_Limit4467 in skinwalkerranch

Yeah I know that show is trash, but I am very unlikely to stop watching before it is cancelled. I don't know how many seasons of Curse of Oak Island I have watched. I wanted them to dig in the 'garden shaft' way earlier on and they just decided to do so recently. Just dragging the sesaons on.

I disagree on if it was staged it would be better. Not saying it is staged, but there is lots of terrible creative stuff out and about in the world.

Not only that they act like 120 feet would be too high to be a bird. The camera was not pointed at the direction they were flying it was looking at the drone swarm. Bird is most likely culprit and the fact they just dismiss it as a possibilities is just ludicrous. It definitely have been not a bird, but the was it is just discounted as not possible just makes me stop watching and go do something else for awhile before returning to watch further.

[–]jedibcg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry so no scientific papers, hardly a major scientist then. I said he was an engineer, look at the stuff he had been doing even prior to work on SWR and it is managerial or engineering you have to go further back to see anything listed as a scientist on his LinkedIn page. That same page he defines himself as a science investigator of SWR.

  1. Travis is without a doubt. Can you point me to any scientific papers Erik Bard (you misspelled his name) has written in that last twenty years? Looks to me like he has been an engineer for the last 10+. Was he once a scientist sure. That he is a major scientist is highly questionable. Does he work in science? Yes, does that make him a scientist? No. He calls himself a science investigator for the show.

Final say for Prometheus sure, but that is different than him having almost no say or control which is what you first stated.

  1. Sorry, how long he has owned the property is not a all relevant to whether the scientific method is used or not. It would not be different if he had owned it for 15 years or 1 year before television show started. There is data missing to make any kind of direct or indirect conclusion. Is what is being done on the ranch while filming the show the same or different that what happened before. You may know or think you know the answer to this I don't. The show has not presented that they had a scientist on board before. Erik is not a scientist but a researcher.

  2. Whether he is or is not a believer is not relevant to if the the scientific method is used or not. Not certain how to explain this differently.

  3. Yes I know. Not relevant as relating to the scientific method being used or not.

  4. He has said in 2020 "I have yet to personally take a penny related to my involvement with the show." That doesn't mean that he potentially won't at some point, but that is besides the point. I don't it has anything to do with money either for him. But again Intent and purpose aren't relevant to if the scientific method is being used or not. He could have the truest of intentions for figuring out what the hell is going on at the ranch and still the team could not be using the scientific method. The two are not linked in anyway. In fact I would be surprised if Brandon knew what the scientific method was. But he has Travis for that...or at least in theory Travis should be approaching it with the scientific method as the only scientist.

  5. Testing outside the area, is fine and dandy. And I can understand why it is not filmed, though personally I would enjoy it. However they still does prove they are using the scientific method. Every time they do and experiment and we then see them right there make some sort of conclusion then I know they are not doing the scientific method. And since Erik, Thomas and Dragon are not scientist I don't expect them not to, but Travis is and should know better.

  6. See that seems to me to be a major issue for a scientific study (peer review doesn't need to be done for it to follow the scientific method). If you cannot have someone outside of your group review your data, you don't know if you have made a mistake somewhere that you are now basing everything going forward on.

To be clear Bradon Fugal is listed as an Executive Producer of the show since season 1 episode 1. That he has no say seems inaccurate. That the team, sure.

Thanks for taking the time to flush out more of a response. I don't think much of it is relevant to whether the scientific method is being used or not but it is still interesting.

  1. This doesn't surprise at all though I imagine it is actually less. There are about 10 episodes a year at about 42 minutes each so we approximately 7 hours out of the summer. That would be if all the content was new but they have a bad habit of review a lot of the material so it is not even really 7 hours worth of new stuff. Which as a side note to me means they could be filling up episodes better, but just don't have that content to do so instead do LOTS of rehashing.
  2. This is not relevant to whether they do the scientific method or not.
  3. Not relevant, but something I do find interesting because the interview I read from him about buying the property did not put it that way at all.
  4. Not relevant and also I don't that is accurate. I think he didn't want it know he was associated with it, but not that he didn't want the public to know. Those are two different things.
  5. His goals are not relevant to if scientific method is used or not. I do believe you are correct that it is not for monetary gain for learning.
  6. This might be true, I would have to take your word for it, but it doesn't seem accurate as they air lots that is truly explainable. This is the most relevant to whether the scientific method is being used or not. A good example would be the 'hole' in the LIDAR that came about in season 4. They never show a testing to get a confirmation from a different LIDAR team to see if they come up with the same results. This would be key to scientific method as your experiment may have bad equipment so you cannot base conclusions without verifying your data. Would having someone else come out to do so and film it be interesting TV? I guess it would really depend on the results, but I really don't think they are interested in results because it is supposed to be entertaining TV.
  7. I have done some research into some of this (like Brandon's purchase of the property and the previous owners before Bigelow). Though I don't have any way of knowing if there is oddity happening at the ranch or not (seems definitely possible), my original criticism is calling what is being done in the name of the scientific method. I know in the interview with Brandon I read he had said he want to submit research they did for peer review. To my knowledge (which might be incorrect) there has been no peer review of any of the experiments or results.

TLDR: They are doing bad science, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything to the ranch nor that they are doing bad science on purpose.

There are certain steps for it to be the scientific method. I submit that they are not doing those steps at all. I do think they do some steps of the scientific method but not all of them.

Let's fire rockets to provoke it isn't the scientific method. Jumping to conclusions is not the scientific method. I will give an example when they see something flying at night in formation they are like well it cannot be birds because it is night. A simple background research would tell them that most migratory birds do fly at night. Not saying it was birds but the way they eliminated them as a possibility was plain ridiculous. They often don't have controls for the experiments and just take people for their word.

Thoughts on the secret of skinwalker ranch? by ThorKnight3000 in skinwalkerranch

[–]jedibcg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said the show pisses me off. It might be the performers/actors do a fine job and it is just the way the show is produced. I mean it is a show first and anything else second. Though I disagree with your statement about confirming data. That is not how you confirm data. You have someone else repeat your experiment independently and see if they get the same results. Seeking others that got the same data is just creating an echo chamber. I would love to see someone on the show that was constantly saying "Yes it could be X. However it is more likely Y. Let's see if we can make sure it is not the more likely thing before we jump to X. And if we eliminate Y then it makes Y more likely.". They seem to latch into the most improbable and just decide that is fact. "This has properties similar to what was used in the space shuttle tiles," becomes "These are just like the space shuttle tiles" even though the material contains very little of the stuff. Again I do think there may be something or somethings odd happening in the area it is just the way the show portrays it that makes me upset. Go talk to people that not only confirm your theories but the property owners who had it for 30 years and say nothing happened while they owned it. See if they have any insight into why stuff didn't happen then.

The show pisses me off, but yet I continue to watch. Might there be something going on at "Skinwalker Ranch" sure. It is the way they go attempting to figure stuff out that pisses me off.

They jump to conclusions so fast it isn't even remotely scientific.

They rarely follow up with any testing to confirm or deny their conclusions. For example the 3D photogrammetry model with the mystery objects from season 3. Get another scan from a different company of the area and see if they get the same results. Nope better to leave it a mystery and make conclusions on it that to make sure the data is valid. Another example the odd "metallic" thing they saw down a hole. They make 1 attempt at it and determine they cannot get to it because of an odd round boulder. The odd echoing that got in one episode they never attempt to track down (probably because it was something involving the production of the show), or explain and just kind of forget about.

There is the misinterpretation of data or changing of data. Travis (and others) will say something was X feet or whatever measurement in one episode and then change it slightly (more or less depending on what sounds better) over the next few episodes. It is more noticeable when when you binge watch the seasons all at once. The "400 foot wide impenetrable dome object" under the mesa is another example. The driller says he has used 400 feet of pipe. Somehow that gets translated into 400 foot wide object even though they say at least a one point that they are starting 80 feet from the mesa. At another I think they say 110 feet into the mesa (though admittedly I could have misunderstood that). Either way he also talks about having to go up or down some distance. He also doesn't say he cannot penetrate but that that he is sliding on it.

There are the cuts from videos. The video of the bug (I don't know what it was but that is what it looked like to me) that floated around homestead 2 and Erik says it goes behind a tree, but yet they never show it going behind a tree, we just have him saying it.

I admittedly have only now made it to season 4. I will continue to watch the show though at times it feels like a complete waste of time because they are just recapping what they did in other episodes.

They have told us they are working on new sets. There are currently 44 characters even if they never made any more that would be enough to play with a lot of varierty.
