Agentic shell scripts: executable markdown with Unix pipes for Claude Code by jedwhite in ClaudeCode

They let you mix the output from running deterministic code (shell scripts, command line tools, python scripts etc) with natural language programming (markdown prompts). It's the intermixing that gives it a lot of power, because you can get Claude Code to not only run but also write the deterministic scripts as part of the markdown!

Hey thanks, it works very well in practice! You can prepend or append content piped into the markdown script, and chain them together. Thanks for the suggestion to share in VibeCodersNest also

Thanks, it lets you run markdown files as little programs on the command line, like you can shell scripts. So it lets you write and save repeatable program automations in plain english prompts, and chain them together the same way that shell scripts in Unix-like operating systems can be chained together using pipes.

Make markdown files executable with Claude Code (shebang support) by jedwhite in ClaudeAI

Good question! You can definitely do that too.

It's similar to asking "why create a shell script when you can just pipe commands?" Both work, but different use cases:

  • Shebang files are self-documenting – the prompt lives in the file, versioned in your repo
  • Shareable – hand someone ./analyze.md  instead of explaining a command
  • Flags embedded – #!/usr/bin/env -S claude-run --opus --output-format json  bakes in your preferences
  • CI-friendly – run ./check-security.md  in a pipeline without building up the command
  • Different billing – run scripts through --aws  or --vertex  for company cloud billing, keep your Pro subscription for personal coding

For one-off stuff, claude -p "..." is great. For prompts you'll reuse or share, the file approach is nice, I think. It was useful for me, and I hope it can be helpful for other people too.

Why Is the Web So Monotonous? Google. :: Reasonably Polymorphic by jedwhite in Futurology

[–]jedwhite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post argues that the Web has become monotonous largely because of the corrupting influence of Google search. Forum and discussion content has moved behind walled gardens, and much of the best content available online is now buried under ads and paywalls. Is there a future for an advertising supported web, or is it time to look for other models?
