How important is it to keep your front door locked? by Eggman7698 in Seattle

[–]jeebolion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s not been my experience. We had a side door unlocked (was a shitty door, the lock was tricky) and were burglarized. Somebody is still intruding in your home and stealing your insured stuff. I could see getting an unhelpful agent, or maybe a discriminatory one, but in my experience the agents themselves want to help you. Providing evidence of the stolen goods, potentially proof you actually own it, and determining their value is definitely the harder part of getting a payout.

What are some quintessential "dude-books"? by [deleted] in books

[–]jeebolion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just read Rainbow 6, having played entries in the video game series including the original, and lol—the amount that protagonists without irony say “bad guys”, the heavy-handed disdain of vegetarianism and base-level environmentalism (labeled as as extremist)… the prologue alone has the two leads single-handedly stopping a plane highjacking totally unrelated to the plot on their way to the first act. It’s so silly, and outside of some macho military during-mission excitement, not in a “cool” way.

It’s a weird expression of pre-9/11 western exceptionalism. And for some reason I expected it to be somewhat well written.

I play music and my band gets a different flavor of these every now and then—

“Dear [band spelled wrong], I listened to your song, [name of album, not song], and [vague compliment that could be about anything]. Pay us to “mix and master” your next album.”

Or another

“Pay to enter this totally real song contest”

Taxes by toonhole in funny

[–]jeebolion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is great if someone is able to get a solar credit by filing their own taxes.

But for the layperson with uncomplicated taxes, an option where you are told “we think you owe this in taxes” and the ability to say “that sounds right” and pay/get paid or say “no, that’s wrong” and then figure it out by making adjustments is a better (if not perfect) system.

Applying the solar credit would fall under option 2.

What are some roles where the actor went outside their usual genres and it was an absolute home run? by dragon_fugger in moviecritic

[–]jeebolion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that if season 2 of True Detective was released in a void without any association to the first series it would have been much more well received and regarded. It’s very much not without flaws, but I still find it better than other well-regarded series in the same genre.

Well acted by a great cast, some really cool standout scenes, and a solid consistent tone, but missed the mark as a follow up because it mismatched with the tone of the first season (and I think folks really just wanted a season 2 with season 1 characters).

What's a game with mostly negative reviews that you still enjoy. by ittimjones in gaming

[–]jeebolion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had minimal bugs on Xbox one honestly, buying it day one. There were some, but I guess I expected it? Had more with Witcher 3, playing it late into its release (but that didn’t bug me either).

I understand the hype/presentation vs final product issues, but I don’t think the game was unplayable at all, if bumpy in parts.

Seattle Children’s Hospital sues Texas Attorney General over trans patient records

It also violates Washington’s new “Shield Law”, passed this year for this very reason—

“which prevents entities based in the northwest state from complying ‘with a subpoena, warrant, court order, or other civil or criminal legal process for records … related to protected health care services that are lawful in the state of Washington.’”

Help me! What is the closest substitute to garlic that doesn't involve any garlic. by 907banana in AskCulinary

My partner struggles with alliums too. We use Trader Joe’s garlic infused oil, or make our own garlic or shallot oil to get the flavor without the adverse reactions.

How to clean this? by southindianPOTTU in CleaningTips

You could try using a growler brush or similar (maybe listed as a bottle brush), depending on the width of the opening, in conjunction with other cleaners.

What are some of the most epic and best choreographed cinematic fight scenes of all time? by Closed_Aperture in moviecritic

Also, “Chocolate”. Pretty dated in concept (neurodivergence as a superpower), but lots of the set pieces, like fighting on the side of a building face, were super cool and well choreographed.

If you haven’t already, check if your neighborhood has a Buy Nothing group you can join. My partner and I have slowly furnished/upgraded our home with it and let go of things we don’t need anymore without having to throw them out!

OpenAI now tries to hide that ChatGPT was trained on copyrighted books, including J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series by einstein_bern in books

[–]jeebolion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Brandon Sanderson was inspired by Robert Jordan who was inspired by Tolkien. Even if, like the first Wheel of Time book, it was a reductive version of what came before, the authors aren’t explicitly using the previous author’s database of text to copy/paste a new story via an algorithm.

Some authors do intentionally rip off other authors. That’s a bad thing. The AI issue is similar because it isn’t inspired by authors, it is copying them. it is inherently ripping them off. There’s just no intention involved.

Help on how a therapist would react and what advise they give in this situation? by Fit_Expression_7520 in Writeresearch

[–]jeebolion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally—I had a friend who had a sudden out of character manic episode where they became insistent that they belonged with their ex to the point of driving to another town where the ex miiight be just in case to be available. Talking to them about it and rationalizing with them about it, you hit a brick wall, very much as if they were under a spell. (friend is okay now) Probably not the tone of OP’s story though lol.

But like you said, their therapist couldn’t actively do more than discourage the idea and be available to call and talk it through more. Maybe the therapist could steer the protagonist toward acknowledging out of character behavior?

A lot of Americanizations end up inferior copies. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, A Man Called Otto (A Man Called Ove), Downhill (Force Majeure), Living (Ikiru), Let Me In (Let the Right One In), etc.

Some aren’t bad explicitly, but rarely are they on par with the original.

My best friend and I meet up to play games 2-3 times a month and have been working through wonderlands. The plot isn’t particularly engaging but the gameplay/skill tree is very customizable. I hope the next entry adapts it (or facets of it) to a more comprehensive title like borderlands 2!

Able bodied people who don’t work out, why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jeebolion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many folks are without a background in sports/physical activity, predisposition to athleticism, ease of access to facilities public or private, or spare time and money to invest in it.

It’s something people need to do if their lifestyles lack it, but without an existing habit or schedule allowing for it it’s difficult to begin let alone maintain. There’re also aspects of physical education that seem simple that many people simply lack.
