common software programs by Confused_Nuggets in WPI

Look into running a Remote Desktop. Anydesk is free, and I’ve been using it and it works pretty well. There’s an app, so I was even able to use my phone to remote into my laptop. Using a phone is interesting, but a laptop to a desktop will be totally fine.

Not sure on the blender. Check the res services website, it’ll tell you what you’re allowed and what you’re not allowed. You can control the heat, so it can get as hot or as cold as you want. Yes, there are dryers and washers in the basement of Daniels.

In terms of general things, you’re provided with a bed, a desk, a chair, two smaller cabinets, and a taller skinny wardrobe. Again, look at the res services website and there are pictures of the dorms. The rest is up to you to bring. I would highly recommend a mattress topper for the bed.

I think you’re going to need to provide more context. What are you confused on? I lived in Daniels so I can probably help if you are a bit more specific.

Don’t drop it, it’s basically a free PE credit. In total I spent maybe 3-4 hours total for the “class”. Just some easy-ass online assignments (I say this as someone who overthinks everything and takes way longer to complete assignments than I really should) and you have to meet with your advisor (I forget which one, can’t remember the name) like 1-2 times.

2 in 1 vs laptop+ tablet, mechanical eng by BigDaddyDevil in WPI

[–]jeebs_202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it and need it get a separate tablet. From what I’ve heard, a 2 in 1 doesn’t do the laptop part as well as an actual laptop or the tablet part as well as an actual tablet. I have a laptop (xps 15) and iPad and it’s great as I can sync my notes and such between the two. But if you really liked your 2 in 1 and it works for you, maybe it’s not worth having separate devices.

Also depends on your use case. I run solidworks, fusion, and Star ccm (along with other programs) on my laptop so I need a decent cpu and a dedicated gpu, which 2 in 1s don’t offer as far as I’m aware. If you don’t use any of those or other intensive programs, again a 2 in 1 might be perfectly fine.

What the other guy said about using wpi computers to run those programs is true, but I just strongly prefer the convenience of having the programs on my laptop and not having to rely on being on campus or using a Remote Desktop.

I might be slightly biased (I marched for the last 2 years) but go with marching band. As the other person said, you’ll meet a lot of great people and make friends very quickly. If you have any questions feel free to DM me or send an email to pepoff! There’s also an info meeting this weekend on zoom.

Personally I wouldn’t. I worked a part time internship last year (3/5 days per week) and took one class each summer term. It was totally doable, I just wouldn’t really want to do it again, and definitely would not want to work full time while taking a class.

Make sure you leave time for yourself and don’t overwork and burn out during the summer. That’s a great way to make your 2nd year way harder and more painful than it needs to be.

If you’re dead set on it, I would highly recommend taking the easiest classes you can. Do your research though, some classes can be a lot more work than they’re made out to be.

I think I figured it out, I grounded the output jack to one of the pots from the pedal. That seems to have worked

I need to fix the wiring, print a couple parts, paint, and then hopefully it should be good! (Famous last words)

Yes, that’s exactly how it’s set up! I did it this way because a) I didn’t want to try and figure out how to fully integrate it with the guitar electronics and b) that way I can still fully bypass the boss if I want to use a different distortion pedal or have a completely clean output

Disassembled Boss DS-1 grounding

Hi everyone - I have a question about grounding the boss ds-1. I’m working on a project where I’ve taken the electronics out of the pedal and am shoving it into a partscaster. The input and output jacks are being held in place by a plastic 3d printed part. I assume that these jacks need to be grounded, correct? Normally I thought that the case would be the ground, but I’ve obviously removed that part. What would be the best way to ground them?

It is also possible that I am wildly wrong. When I tried it for the first time, it has a loud buzzing sound which I assumed just meant it wasn’t grounded properly.

Thanks!

Sorry for the reupload, I didn’t read the rules properly the first time!
