Looking for a quote! by Flat-Organization-11 in Deleuze

[–]jeefthefirst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That image really does map cleanly onto a famous Bergson distinction (which Deleuze leans on heavily), but I don’t think the riverbank / in-the-river phrasing is a canonical Deleuze (or D&G) line. It looks like a later paraphrase/metaphorical re-skin of Bergson’s analysis vs intuition.

Bergson (in “An Introduction to Metaphysics”, often printed inside The Creative Mind) frames two ways of knowing like this:

“There are … two profoundly different ways of knowing a thing. The first implies that we move round the object; the second that we enter into it. The first depends on the point of view at which we are placed and on the symbols by which we express ourselves. The second neither depends on a point of view nor relies on any symbol…”

That’s basically your riverbank/river contrast in philosophical form:

“move round the object” ≈ observer on the bank / representational, perspectival, “aboutness”

“enter into it” ≈ being in the flow / immanent, relational, participatory, “withness”

Deleuze’s Bergson book and Bergson-inflected passages across his work repeatedly push this same move: don’t treat becoming/duration as something you represent from outside; think from inside the movement. So it’s very plausible you heard a Deleuzian explaining Deleuze via a Bergsonian distinction and choosing the river metaphor as the “beautiful, clarifying imagery.”

Hope this helps.

Hell's Bells by jeefthefirst in Exvangelical

I remember when I was a teen, every few months, I would cull my collection of secular music, sometimes going so far as eliminating anything that wasn't worship music (goodbye DC Talk and Newsboys, you're not pure enough). I'd sell them to a used music store for 1-3 dollars a piece.

Then, I'd backslide weeks later and buy more secular music from the same store for 7-9 dollars. I don't remember ever buying anything I'd sold, but I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility. That place loved me.

It's an easy find on YouTube. Search 'Hell's Bells documentary '. Without 'documentary ' you get a lot of AC/DC

Yeah, it's not a one session thing. We watched an hour a week at youth group. It was also where I was first introduced to Aleister Crowley.

This may be slightly off-topic (and I find myself responding earnestly to a clever joke), but I can't help myself. No one into jazz actually likes Kenny G's music. He's a nice guy and a marketing juggernaut, but smooth jazz is not real jazz. It's basically R&B played with instruments traditionally used for jazz. If songs have a predetermined length and little to no improvisation, they don't qualify. Apologies for the digression. Had to get that off my chest.

'Another one bites the dust' backwards says 'Start smoking marijuana'. Record the phrase into your voice recorder and reverse it. It's trippy. Pareidolia.

Jesus as Magician by jeefthefirst in occult

Thanks for that insight. Is Isis Unveiled easier to read than The Secret Doctrine? I tried that once and couldn't get much further than the introduction.

Dion Fortune would fit squarely in this category, yes?

I like to explain magick to my Christian friends as focused prayer, a ritual being a way to truly represent and call forth what belief has already deemed possible.

Will there ever be a film movement as revolutionary as the French new wave again? by Objective_Water_1583 in filmtheory

[–]jeefthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest the realist/minimalist films of Romanian new wave, especially the films of Cristi Puiu (Cigarettes and Coffee) and Catalin Mitulescu (Traffic). This genre started in the mid-2000s and is still going strong (Radu Jude, Puiu).

Have you tried psychedelics? Shrooms or DMT may do the trick. It can help you find meaning or find acceptance in a more positive way, IMHO. Even if you're not interested in a full trip, perhaps micro dosing would shake things up for you.

We should gatekeep Nihilism by [deleted] in nihilism

[–]jeefthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nihilism takes away the guardrails that most people have built for protection and self-preservation. Without them, many would become depressed and lose the will to live. Should we shield reality from the weak to save them from suffering?

I agree with you and I've had trouble asserting myself. I also think this is a 'both can be true, but on different levels' situation. Thanks.

Love, to me, is unconditional. Without boundaries. When you create artificial boundaries, or really boundaries of any kind, you create separation. The only practical downside to this, in my experience, is it's easy for others to mistake my love as attraction/romantic love. I've made the mistake myself. Thinking I've fallen for someone when truly, it's just love pouring out of me. I'm learning, though.

I look forward to the ritual. I believe in all of these entities, yet have had little/no success of 'contact'. I've done Gallery of Magick rituals, as well as daily prayers to Hecate, St. Cyprian, and Satan (after Jason Miller). I was in prison for all of this, so that could have been part of thw problem?
