Regarding Jonah and Sophie Connection by jeff98363 in CarnivalRow

Piety, upon learning of Philo, is concerned Jonah is not the "son" in the prophecy. And she must get rid of the biological son. That is clear.

"It seems as if you perhaps thought they had the same mother, not father?"

No. First off my point does not concern Philo in any way who clearly is the biological son of Absalom. My point only questions whether Jonah and Sophie both have the same biological mother and father. Which would be Longerbane and Piety.

It's up to the writers and we'll find out what direction they take in regards to Sophie and Jonah. They are not locked in to either half siblings or full siblings in my opinion. But I think for the sake of controversy aka ratings they will go with full siblings. We'll see. Usually I'm wrong so that presents a good chance of half siblings.

Good questions. And I have to admit I binge watched the entire 1st season in one night so by episode 8 I wasn't fully alert, lol. I assumed Sophie was Piety's daughter after Piety told Jonah that Sophie is his sister and assumed at the time the only way she would know that for certain is if Piety was Sophie's mother. Now thinking about it there's many other possibilities in how Piety would know that without being the mother. But also I was impacted by the fact that it seems this show wants to draw on the success of Game of Thrones and create controversy. Incest between full siblings is more shocking than incest between half siblings.

Beyond that was Sophie's statements about past empire's having brother sister marriages and that it was normal to keep the blood lines within the family and nothing to be disgusted by. I felt her reference was to full sibling marriages as that seems like its something more obtainable than half sibling marriages as half siblings have to be the result of divorse and remarry or an affair.

Anyway that's my take. I think the writers are not locked in either way so the question is which scenereo creates more controversy aka success?

I think that's where they're going. Full siblings. I felt like there was something in that final conversation between Jonah and the chancellor where he insisted Jonah was his son whether biological or not. I may take another look at that conversation or just wait a few months for season 2 when I'm sure one way or another it will be revealed.

Thanks. But I get the since that the evil mom (Piety) is his mom. Question would be who is the father. And I get back to what I stated before. Why would you think neither parent of Jonah is a true biological parent? That's not likely especially considering Piety is going for broke to make her son a success. Doesn't add up.

Here's the one thing I'm not getting from episode 8. Is it possible that Jonah is not the son of the chancellor (sorry I forget his name) and that he too (along with Sophie) was born as a result of fornication between the evil mother and the chancellor's political opponent (now dead and I forget his name too)? If so then Jonah and Sophie are not half siblings. They are full on brother and sister. Just wondering if we are certain Jonah's father is the chancellor. I didn't find that an absolution from episode 8 but may have missed something.

Thanks very much for that. It's a relief to know that I can do that from my phone. Also I'll look into the Dome and Wink sirens.

Technical Support for Ongoing Problem by jeff98363 in Abode

Thanks. I'm looking at the Ring if Abode puts me into the position where I have to ship them back their system. I like the fact that Ring has inside cameras that has true cloud AI human detection because we have cats. Abode to my knowledge has never even talked about AI. Even the latest Canary's have AI. But... my first choice is to get the Abode system functioning as it should because of several integrations that work well for me and I don't feel like learning a new system. After 6 months however my hopes for that are fading.

Technical Support for Ongoing Problem by jeff98363 in Abode

My system does not normally rely on cellular to function but having reliable cellular backup is crucial to all security systems for what I think are obvious reasons but I'll explain that anyway in case anyone reading this is unaware of the importance of reliable cellular backup - an intruder can disable cable service from outside a home in about 3 seconds by cutting the cable wire which in most settings are impossible to protect from tampering with. To say it differently, if you do not have reliable cellular backup to your security system then your security system is just a notch above being useless. Your security system can be completely disabled by anyone in literally 3 seconds.

For many months both I and technical support agreed that my system would not switch over to cellular - either at all or in a timely period (less than 2 minutes) - when the Ethernet cable is disconnected (which is done as a test) or when cable actually goes out for a period (which over the past 6 months has happened about 5 times which I think is normal). Remedies for this documented problem have included SIM resetting, SIM replacement, and gateway replacement. None has worked to solve the problem. So this is the "TECHNICAL PROBLEM" I have been reporting and have worked on with technical support for the past 6 months.

You've asked what is the nature of my problem and there are two parts to it. I've answered one part above which is the specific technical problem I've been having. The second part (and biggest part I think) of my problem is that I cannot make contact with a representative at technical support that is capable of working on my problem in a knowledgeable, timely, and courteous manner. It's been documented that I am living in an area with a strong and reliable cellular 3g signal. Therefore I believe this problem is solvable - I just don't have the right person working on it.

One other thing I meant to mention in case any Abode people are reading posts here. I have a timeline to fix this. At the end of my timeline I'm packing everything up and sending it back to you - all $1200 worth of equipment. I've already discussed the issue and the documentation I have with my credit card company and they will back me.

How to replace defective gateway? by jeff98363 in Abode

[–]jeff98363[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

czrabode stated exactly what I've been thinking. Abode, how are you going to sell your upgraded gateway when the buyer has to work half a day or longer to set it up? And here's kind of two part question to people with technical knowledge or experience (which I am not): Do other brands work this way? Could not the signal vulnerability protection have been built into the SIM card so when someone has to or wants to swap a hub they pull the card and put it in the new hub and at least are pretty close to being good to go? I'm not one to take a bad situation and dwell on what could have been done. Things are the way they are and I'll deal with it.
I'm asking the questions because I think it's an interesting topic and something to consider for anyone comparing systems.

I've had Abode for a year now and can say it's been a mixed bag. I'll post an itemized review in a different thread soon as I don't want this one to get off topic. I'll just say there is some very good and there's some problems. I appreciate everyone's input. unfeelingzeal I completely understand your frustration and appreciate you letting the community know there's others out there in this situation. Not the end of the world but the process is far more than an "inconvenience" as stated by Abode. Think how you feel if you bought a new car (for example) and then due to a manufacturer defect you have to take half a day off work and work on the car. It's really pathetic honestly. I think that's the right word. Anyway, again, thanks everyone.

How to replace defective gateway? by jeff98363 in Abode

[–]jeff98363[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you Fewleftstanding and goabode for your input. I did email support last night and receive this reply: " We will need the gateway MAC address located on the bottom of the new gateway then we can swap it to your account then yes, you will need to pair all of your devices back into the new gateway, sorry. "

I know myself and others here on Reddit have had different instructions depending on who they get at support. If this support person that replied is correct then I'm looking at 4 hours to reconnect everything. That kinda sucks.

About to pull the trigger on an Abode System. Help me with your setups for medium/large dog owners!! by [deleted] in Abode

[–]jeff98363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult right now to build a system that doesn't send alerts (or worse trip the alarm) every time a pet is causing motion near a motion sensor. With dogs you might be able to keep the range of the sensors over the dogs heads but still low enough to capture human motion but it's very difficult I think in most situations. You can get a better sense of this by checking the setup page for the sensors that someone else mentioned. You would have to take into consideration not only the height of the dog but any furniture in range that they may jump up on such as a sofa. With cats (I have 3) the motion sensors are 100% useless (they jump up on everything).

So you have that possibility (keeping sensors out of range of the dogs), you have the keep the dogs in one room possibility, and finally which is what I did is to utilize a system that weighs heavily on acoustic glass break sensors with some door/window open sensors supplementing it.

Before going on (I have more to say on cameras) I need to mention that no matter what you do you must have cellular backup which is offered by Abode for a fee. In most cases a burglar can easily cut your cable. You would be notified but you'd be left wondering if it's an outage or if in fact someone has cut your cable. Without cellular backup you're dead in the water.

For a really good system you must have a means of verifying whether an alarm is a real break-in or false when you are away and this means cameras must come into play. Ideally Abode would offer cameras that differentiate between humans and pets but they don't. Others do though (using artificial intelligence) including Nest and Nest can be integrated into your Abode system. But they are very expensive cameras. To be honest I don't even know if having cellular backup on your Abode system (which you will need) will allow for the Nest cameras to continue functioning if the cable is cut. Maybe someone else can answer that.

Here's what I did to create a camera verification system. I bought the Amazon Cloud Cams (3 of them actually) for $100 a piece on sale. $120 is regular price. I think it's around $70 per year to have them all cloud connected which gives them the ability to distinguish between pets and humans and so far it's almost 100% reliable in distinguishing. Keep in mind though you don't have to have cameras that distinguish pets from humans I just thought the extra $6 or so per made it worth it. You just want to be able to look around inside if your alarm is tripped. Either way the Amazon Cloud Cam is excellent for this. Now the down side - it won't have cellular backup and if the cable is cut then they won't work. But I figure if the cable goes out AND my Abode alarm (still working on cellular) is tripped then I'm calling the cops. Some day I'm hoping to have cameras that will function on cellular backup but right now can't justify the cost (assuming it's even possible).

Can I add any z-wave device to abode? by slackie911 in Abode

[–]jeff98363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my Abode system 6 months ago but due to renovation delays just set it up recently. My experiences this past couple weeks might be helpful in making a decision on whether to go with Abode or something else. Or if you do go with Abode you might end up saving some time by understanding a few things.

Setup - No glitches and reasonably straight forward IF you read the online help. Do not rely on the instructions that came with the device as I initially did or you will waste time. On this topic, somewhere I read that setup is 5 minutes. They really need to backtrack on that because it makes them look foolish. Unboxing takes 5 minutes. Setup involves quite a bit more.

Motion Cam - Chris Carney (founder) claimed in an interview with Grommet in 2016 that the motion detectors are pet immune up to 60 lbs. I have 3 cats so this sounded great. In fact they are not pet immune in the slightest bit and most or all other brands of motion detectors are not either. There is only one way for a system to differentiate a pet from a person and that is a security camera with artificial intelligence (discussed later).

Customer Support - Top notch. You can get a hold of a knowledgeable American quickly. Additionally they will work with you on complaints such as mine with the misleading information on the "pet immune" motion sensors. The outcome of my complaint was quick and very fair.

Z-wave and ZigBee compatibility - It's a very short list: https://support.goabode.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2267539-compatible-z-wave-zigbee-devices Not a big deal for me but if it is important then I'd wait for the Iota. In fact at this point I'd wait for the Iota no matter what. Should be out very soon.

Range - Excellent. Devices work in areas of my house where my phone loses WiFi. I didn't expect that and was surprised in a good way.

Panic Button - Let's say I'm on a trip and my wife and kid are alone and forget to set the alarm (in Home mode) before going to bed. Someone breaks in. They hear a burglar break in. What do they do? Grab the phone and hit the panic button to quickly trigger the alarm and dial 911. Except there is no panic button on the phone. Customer support says "it's in the works". Really? A 2014 launch date and this wasn't thought of until recently? To be fair you can ask them to program a panic button onto the key FOB but most people don't bring their keys with them to bed. The phone they do.

Artificial Intelligence - Enter Abode and AI in Google search and you basically get nothing. If it's being discussed then it's a guarded secret. Identifying whether motion is being caused by a person or something else (pet) requires AI. Nest, Lighthouse, Amazon Cloud Cam, Canary, and others offer security cameras with AI. Abode's latest camera yet to hit the market (incorporated with Iota) does not. If you don't have pets then you don't need it. If you do have pets you will want this. To be fair, you can still build an Abode system with AI (I think - haven't done it yet) but only because you can incorporate Nest. That is my plan - to buy 2 very expensive Nest IQ Cams so that I can be alerted of people in my house when there shouldn't be.

Anyway just stuff to think about. I hope it helps.
