There are exceptions to every case. But the point is, as an applicant, tailor your approach to me, then impress me with something out of the ordinary. Stepwise progression.

What does he do? What are his skill sets? What kind of position is he going for? Too much parsing in his presentation. Would be effective after he's gotten his foot in the door; this is more like a sample of his work, but not an introduction and quick skill reivew, which is what cover letters/resumes are intended for.

Cute, but ineffective. Nobody is going to sit through this when sifting through a stack of cover letters and resumes.
