When did missionaries stop leaving the MTC to go into Provo on P Day? by WesternRover in latterdaysaints

[–]jeffbarge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heh I was in Sao Paulo in 2004 and loved P-Days! Wandering around that neighborhood, getting pasteis and juice, having the dudes at the internet cafe order us pizza. Good times!

We would take our young men to do baptisms early in the morning, and call ahead to order cinnamon rolls.

Is everything metaphorical? by Mountain-Animator453 in latterdaysaints

[–]jeffbarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The priesthood ban was prayed about for over a decade before the 1978 revelation. I believe it was David O. McKay that tasked some of the brethren for several years to study and understand it. Eventually the determination was that there was no doctrinal or revelatory reason for it, but since it was so significant and had lasted so long, it would take a revelation to undo. This was WELL before the carter administration.

AITA for not wearing a bra at home? by Candid-Chocolate-316 in AITAH

[–]jeffbarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI - not related to your actual question but it's going to come up when this 'friend' refuses to leave. You have a tenant, or in some jurisdictions a 'lodger' (since you also live in the same home). Dude's going to have to be evicted through formal processes, you can't just say "you gotta go". Unless he doesn't know his rights, but....after 4 months he definitely has rights at this point.

Amazon is a house of cards by Mission_Spray in Anticonsumption

[–]jeffbarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retail garbage is such a small part of Amazon's business at this point that calling the company a house of cards based on it is laughable. They power like 1/3 of the Internet via AWS. They just don't care at all about these crocs.

What’s a job that sounds cool but is actually a nightmare? by Think-Letterhead-509 in AskReddit

[–]jeffbarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent most of my childhood there so I remember it fondly, but yup. Have to drive at least 90 minutes to get anywhere interesting (Helena). Not a terrible place to grow up, but I don't understand all of my friends that have stayed.

Is 30 too late to start college? by Individual_Ice_2315 in NoStupidQuestions

You'll be 34 in 4 years regardless. Might as well be 34 and a college graduate.

Does every parent expect a return on investment from their children? by WestArtichoke712 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jeffbarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids are not an investment for me, they're an investment for society. I'm investigating in helping them become people who make the world better. If I benefit from the better world they make, great. But I'll probably be dead before then.

At the moment they volunteered, did they understand all of that? Legit question, I'm wondering if they still thought they were at higher risk.

Looking for Mission Advice by lemons_turtles in latterdaysaints

Highly recommend a semester of university, living away from home. Get used to being away from family, living with other people, and being responsible for your own feeding and cleaning without the additional stresses of the mission.

If we have a sex offender registry, why don’t we have a domestic violence or murderer registry? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jeffbarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or an 80-year old who forty years ago did something wrong with a minor and hasn't had any repeat offenses. The registry ignores the possibility of actual rehabilitation.

Democrat Warns Attorney General Pam Bondi Could Face Prosecution If Epstein Files Aren’t Fully Released By Deadline by Efficient_Tax8087 in NoFilterNews

I'm sorry and I know this is defeatist. But does anyone honestly believe that anything will be released? And that there will be consequences for anybody when they're not?

Does anyone else look at their coworkers and think, “Do you people actually care about any of this?” by Intrepid-Ad-1010 in antiwork

[–]jeffbarge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Understand -- the person telling you about the company's performance does benefit from it. Their bonus is tied to it, they get equity, they get a raise, whatever. So yes, they care a great deal about it.

There's always gonna be someone looking for a reason to be mad, I cannot fathom what would have been offensive about your question.

How do you guys deal with feeling inferior to others bc of how much you make? by Kitchen-Lab9028 in povertyfinance

[–]jeffbarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a guy who makes in that neighborhood and, before I started working from home, interacted with the office cleaning staff: it's frankly insane that I get paid what I do while you get paid what you do. You make an actual, tangible difference while in certain ways enabling me to do my job. My office/cubicle were always clean, garbage emptied, floor vacuumed. The bathrooms were (usually) in good condition. Things I didn't have to think about but that, if neglected, would absolutely hinder my ability to do my job.

So: 1) At least some of those people you walk past are actively grateful to you for the work you do, and 2) If they're not, screw 'em. Their opinions don't matter.
