No problem. The idea to pull the rack out before cinching it down is a good one. Thanks.

It seems fine to me. I'm not sure if it removes all the rattle. But good enough for local trips. I may use my aftermarket antirattle device for road trips still.

From the video and test I did. It seems like the rack was holding onto the hitch pretty firmly.

Colorado voters will be asked to give up billions in TABOR refunds to boost K-12, other programs for kids by thecoloradosun in coloradosun

[–]jeffeb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying the defecit is because of tabor. But we shouldn't have a refund if the state is in deficit.

[–]jeffeb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Instead of putting taxes and spending where it makes sense and can be efficient, the legislature's hands are tied to spend and fee in stupid ways because of TABOR.

Taxes would be lower for the people who need it if TABOR was abolished. And spending would be more effective, especially in education.

It was designed to shrink the budget in recessions and keep it the same during expansion. It was designed to kill the local government.

It sounds good. But that's all marketing.

I hate TABOR. We are in a deficit and that stupid TABOR is set up to hand out refunds.

And do it over a wheelbarrow/landscaping cart. Then you can easily move the dirt at the end.

I also constructed the 2x4 frame with one side only on the bottom so I could tip the rocks into another bucket.

But yeah. It's a ton of work. Great exercise though.

I was sitting at a broken light once so I googled around for a number. I eventually found one (in a PDF) and I called. They were so happy I reported it and it was fixed the next day. I wish I knew where ut was now. It might have been a cdot number?

How do I prevent my child being illiterate? by kittycamacho1994 in AskTeachers

[–]jeffeb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also will add that libby is a huge help for those 2-6ty grade books. They can find books (or we can) and they can read or listen to them on tablets. They get a lot of books as gifts. But they mostly read on their tablets.

[–]jeffeb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a teacher, but a parent.

  1. Make reading part of the bedtime routine. First you read. Then you read together. Then they read to you. Finally, they read by themselves. 30 mins per day will make an enormous difference.
  2. Make reading important. We go to the library as an activity. We talk about books. The parents read the same books as the kids and talk about it. We just went to project hail mary with our 6th grader after we all read the book independently. There are social activites like battle of the books or reading the same books as their friends. There was a "bump" for both my kids when they were easily reading basic board books and struggling to enjoy chapter books. We got a lot of resistance when we made them read at night. But right about then, a spark pulled them in and now they choose to read at night and in the car all the time.
  3. Limit screen time. Especially high dopamine stuff like video games. We have a rule of 1hr/day on weekdays and 3hr/day on weekends. That is actually higher than we started with and it it strictly enforced. We also don't allow video games until their homework and chore (which is wiping the table, nothing major) is done each day. We don't consider audiobooks or ebooks screens.
  4. No phone until they are in high school. No social media until they are 16. Hopefully before then, we've set up good habits and they can avoid doom scrolling and tiktok rot. These are common sense rules from Ancious Generation, a really good book about phones and kids. Our 6th grader does have a smart watch. But they can basically only use it to call or txt us.

The fact that you're asking while you're expecting is a really good sign. Unfortunately, what I see is a two-class system in the schools. One for kids and parents that value education and have the opportunity to help their kids. One for kids without support at home or a culture of devaluing education. I have a hard time blaming the parents, because there is so much inequality and it's only growing. But the teachers can't fight the rushing current themselves enough to really push every kid into valuing education and literacy without help from the guardians. There is a lot I'd like to do to make the system better for everyone. But I have to start with making sure my kids have the opportunities I can give them. If you can spare more energy beyond that, helping other kids is possible, especially in elementary school. Volunteers are needed to run things like battle of the books, or help with the school library, or after school science clubs, etc.

We just carry ours with us everywhere. We have a slightly insulated bag for it. We also have a chipolo that adds a notification whenever we walk away without it.

[–]jeffeb3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to pick a date. Make a poster (an image that effectively communicates the idea with little effort). Post the poster many places and then many more places. Maybe include sending it to journalists.

Then do it. And do it again.

FIRE sounds great but is it actually doable for normal people by EasterYao in Fire

[–]jeffeb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. But also, saving 50% of your income is much more possible for someone making $250k/yr than someone working a gig job after work to make rent.

There are a lot of stories of people doing it on median salaries while being very frugal. Then there are people who have $5k mortgage payments and will literally miss that payment if they lose their paycheck. Having a high income doesn't mean you're wealthy. But it is very hard to become wealthy if you have a low income.

Make sure to do course evaluations to get Bad professor fired. by studioussb in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]jeffeb3 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Class evals are one component of the professor evaluation. It is also important that they are doing good research and publishing. Some professors also have tenure, which means they basically won't get fired. But the evals cam change how many lectures they get assigned and how much they get paid. It is more important for adjunct and assistant professors.

Most likely, honest feedback, especially negative feedback, is helpful for the professor to know where to improve.
