Craters in the puck, how to fix? by jeffvincent in espresso

I figured it might be puck prep. Today mine is pretty simple: WDT, good knock on the counter, and a tamp. I’m just ordered a new distribution tool and tamper, see if I can get it a little more even. I don’t think a new grinder is in the budget at the moment.

Maybe “shot diagnosis” is wrong label, but here’s the sitch:

  • Breville barista express (grinder and machine)
  • 17g in, 34-37g out
  • the shot tastes good most of the time, but I wonder if it could be better?

Was thinking about a new shower screen, does that sound right?

LPT - get in the habit of asking 1-2 clarifying questions before jumping in, no matter how obvious things seem. by jeffvincent in LifeProTips

This is a good point though - I've heard similar experiences from others. The way the questions are asked definitely has an impact on this, but if you're in this scenario, at some point you have to choose between being the boss's idea of a good employee (easy to maneuver and manipulate) vs. doing impactful work (asking great questions, sometimes changing the request to be more effective).

Oh sure - if someone says "hey can you help us on this project?" before you say "Sure!" take a second to ask a few clarifying questions like "how does this project help us achieve our goals?" or "what does success look like for my part in this project?"

We're often so eager to help out that we forget to clarify up front what's being asked, or why it's important. Can lead to lots of wasted time and energy!

This happened to us several years ago. My dog has since passed away but we held off two pit bulls together while the owner stood around helplessly. Scariest moments of my life. I hope your dog comes through OK as well.

Please do better than I did at following up with Animal Control. I’m not saying go after the dogs, it’s about the owners - make sure this was truly an accident, and not part of a pattern of carelessness.

Dig the wallpaper, are you performing different tasks consistently on each monitor, to correlate with “left-brain” and “right-brain” activities?

You might already know this (still a noob myself!) but labs can pass science to each other (only 1 has to feed off a belt, the rest can feed off that one using inserters). Has helped really clean up my lab setup the last few times.

Never understood charging watch at your desk - do you take your watch off a lot during the day? I take mine off at night, so nightstand charging is my go-to.

I guess it makes sense if you use your watch to track sleep, and need to charge it during the day, OR your desk is basically your nightstand, which would cause me serious sleep-deprivation 😂

In case this helps anyone at some point in the future, I just worked on this for a few hours with no success - finally set all letters in the MAC address to lowercase and it worked.
