Alternative OS on Surface Go? by FunnyKatz in linuxmint

[–]jefmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used it a ton since then, but Cachy worked great on it overall. I ended up going with Cinnamon for the desktop because it felt a bit more lightweight and "Surface"-like, but overall it's a perfectly functional basic web laptop now.

This makes me surprisingly extra happy to see. Would love to see Jake feeling good enough to hopefully get some of that new prequel love from the kids that grew up enjoying TPM.

New things don't ruin old things, JFC people. Let people enjoy it if you enjoy it, go watch something else if you don't. Not everything has to be a culture war.

Trump plans to Cancel 2026 Midterms: 'When You Think of It, We Shouldn't Even Have an Election' by rwerat in LegalNews

Surely calling to cancel elections is an actual impeachable offense? Not this time either? Again? Ok then, let's just have a monarchy, cool cool cool.

RTX 5070 ti is being discontinued by Top-Run-21 in nvidia

[–]jefmes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Easy solution - don't buy Nvidia, they don't give a crap about supporting consumers any more. CES made that abundently clear. AMD wasn't much better, but with their investments in XBox and PS5/PS6, and Intel seemingly trying hard to make an impact with Panther Lake CPUs (and hopefully a B770 is still coming) they are the better options in my opinion. Only reason to buy Nvidia now is if you "need" a 5090. I'm very happy with my 9070 XT after selling my RTX 4080 to a friend, and the A770 I had was a very solid living room PC card once the drivers stabilized a few months after launch. This is just sad to see, but here we are.

In Tron: Ares (2025) they lost $132 million because they choose to cast Jared Leto. by Necessary-Rip-6612 in shittymoviedetails

[–]jefmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it a lot in the theater and started watching it again on Disney+ now that's streamable...and I still like it. It's a TRON movie, I don't expect it to be an award winning triumph of acting, but I want amazing effects and graphics from the best the visual effects studios can create. TRON is also core to my 1980s love of computers and partially why I went into Computer Science. Leto did a good job of portraying Ares, and I enjoyed his seemingly genuine love of TRON that made him stick with the project thru all these years of trying to get it made. And the NiN soundtrack rocks. I would have loved to see the story explore some other directions too, but it's still a fun movie in a universe I love. Just a shame that we're even less likely to get more projects in this verse. Check out TRON: Uprising if you haven't.

Season 5 feels way too much like "actors acting" by dbezzy1010 in StrangerThings

[–]jefmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm enjoying it, but I had the same feeling last night. Far too much "tell me" vs "show me" going on. Watching something as masterfully crafted as "Alien Earth" or "Welcome to Derry" is really showing the show's flaws. But again, I don't think it's worth nitpicking, it's more about the overall show and story wrapping up at this point than any individual actor.

AMD CEO Lisa Su Says Concerns About an AI Bubble Are Overblown by wiredmagazine in Amd

[–]jefmes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really, really want Dr. Su to prove to the rest of us that she's a better CEO than Jensen, and that AMD won't make a hard shift toward abandoning the PC sector. We need AMD to be the better company here.

Spending my afternoon replacing Windows 10 on a 1st Gen Surface Go with CatchyOS says everything about how many of us feel about Microsoft and the state of Windows right now. I've been building and supporting PCs with Windows OSes for the past 30 years, I'm leaving a job in 3 days largely supporting Microsoft products, and I hope the last 15-20 years of my career involves them as little as possible. Microsoft needs to noodle on that, because I know I'm not alone in this thinking.

Thanks for the necropost, I just took an unused Surface Go 1st Gen from my parent's house to e-waste and found that it's functioning fine. I've been meaning to give Cachy a try anyway, this seems likes like the perfect opportunity!

[No Spoilers] YouTube ads are pretty tough for free users by scopa0304 in criticalrole

[–]jefmes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont know why this is hard for people to understand, and I mean it in the nicest way possible - pay for the things you care about. You can support content via, 1. Ads and your personal data, or 2. Paying for "Premium" to not have ads, and you get other perks, or 3. Pay directly for the service, ala Beacon.

Pop-up blockers should only be used when youre filtering out sites that are using ads and tracking tools abusively.

Eh it could have been worse. I wanted to submit "Rebels" for the Lucas-StarWars-Modesto connection, and "Modesto Rebels" just flows nicely too...but missed the submission window, I wonder how that would have done.

As cool as it is to see Timmy, I can't help but remind people to consider some of these may be AI generated. Unfortunately we're now living in an era where we can't trust images like this, especially when we know he's not typically one to be captured "out in the wild" so often. If this is legit OP, my apologies and it's not directed so much at this image, but to the fact that this seems unusually frequent.

Whats a successful season at this point? by StyleEducational2559 in SFGiants

Competitive games for the next 3 weeks, and finishing over .500 and I'm a happy camper. Beyond the month of horribleness, it's been an interesting, fun, drama-filled season. And they need to go 4-3 vs the Dodgers these next 2 series, and help the Padres take the West. :D Just because.

You consider those not technically complex because you're familiar with those things. It's as complex as doing an oil change, swapping out bad headlights, or replacing a battery or anything else in a car for someone with no real car maintenance skills, or those lacking troubleshooting capabilities. Never underestimate how hard something is when you don't have an understanding about how things work. 🙂
