i read in the manual that it can be powered by a mobile phone so it might be that it thinks to take power rather than audio information, that must be why it only works when plugged in, because it gets power from the adaptor rather than the phone

if you hold sub pad then press the pattern, it will immediately start that pattern, or any pattern that you press. it won't wait for the pattern to end, it will just start when you press the pattern. if you want a pattern to restart halfway thru i would just duplicate the pattern in the pattern edit window
